the only reason Eisenhower was in overall command when the USA entered the war in 1941 is because it was politically impossible to have a British commander when somthing like 65 out of 85 divisions were American, this is why all of Eisenhower 's senior staff in commande of air, army, navy etc. for Op. Well my grandfather who served in the US army during the war said that we didn't win the war the Russians did because if the Russian had not been raising hell on the eastern front the western front (where the US and the Allies fought) would have been more defended remember there were to fronts in WW2 and the eastern front were the biggest. And the Russians lost almost 6 million men during ww2.

It was the Soviets who broke the back of the full force o the Nazi hordes at Stalingrad, As for the A-bomb, the principles by 1935-37 were known not just to a few Americans but to the British , Swedes, Danes and Germans. What the US achieved, by harnessing all the best brains in the world, many who had fled Hitler and his ilk was to build a "practical bomb" based on Uranium and Plutonium first.It is unfortunate the revisionists cannot leave history alone.

Eisenhower is just awesome. WWII was such an amazing thing, I'm not saying that war is good or trying to glorify it... It was a horrible part of our history but at the same time an overwhelmingly interesting part. Sometimes I hate the era i live in right now. I love history and the way things used to be... I would of loved to have lived during the 20's 30's 40's and 50's and I know WWII wasn't fun and there would of been a good chance that I died but I would of served in the war in a heartbeat.

the only reason Eisenhower was in overall command when the USA entered the war in 1941 is because it was politically impossible to have a British commander when somthing like 65 out of 85 divisions were American, this is why all of Eisenhower 's senior staff in commande of air, army, navy etc. for Op. Overlord aka D Day were British, Monty. being in overall commande of the ground forces, basicaly because the UK had been in the war since 1939 and were hardened and familiar with the enemy

Eisenhower had NEVER been in battle, Gen. Montgomery was a seasoned soilder who had served his country in many wars and was to direct the allied forces on the ground under the overall command of Eisenhower. Eisenhower constantly questioned and hassled Montgomery, which basicaly hindered the entire westen front, when you watch a TV programme or film about world war two, you will hardly EVER here of Monty, his military genius was forgotten, credit given to Eisenhower and Patton

@kisschris77 tell me a general from world war 1 or 2 that didnt suffer military defeats, market garden was a failure because Eisenhower refused to put enough men into it, he refused Monty exrta divisions from the US 12 army group bacuse it would and i QUOTE ''look bad back home if the 12 army group only has 1 army in it'' because it was an 'election year' in the states. Eisenhower was basicaly making politicaly motivated stratigical military desisions, and that was a disaster..

@kisschris77 Monty-Bashing as you were I'm sure you know that the man in charge of the BEF in 1940 was John Vereker, Lord Gort and it is he who is responsible for the British defeat in that year. Montgomery was initally just a divisional commander then a temporary Corps commander during the Dunkirk evacuations. I suggest you read up about Montgomery and the 3rd "Iron" Division's conduct in the battle of France before you attempt to scoff at it because, I assure you, there is nothing to scoff at.

He was a good soldier the other a tirant whose thirst for blood surpassed that of any man that ever lived. However, my admiration is to Marshal Chuikov, the protector of Stalingrad.

He did this from the moment he was the leader of his party to his very death. The Russian Premier showed no special interest. All he said was he was glad to hear it and hoped we would make "good use of it against the Japanese.'' this is how it was back then, Starlin played his hand close to his chest at all times

@sikmiXXX The Soviets knew about the US development of the atomic bomb & they knew this before Truman said anything to Stalin... That's why Stalin didn't act very intertested when Truman told him. They had infiltrated the Manhattan Project via a British physicist by the name of Klaus Fuchs who had met with a Soviet agent named "Raymond", on more than one occasion, where he supplied him with notes on a working design for the atomic bomb... Klaus Fuchs wasn't even arrested for this until 1950

As Stephen Ambrose wrote, Ike's place in history was secure on the evening of June 6,1944, but his story doesn't end there. A simple mid-western farm boy, went to West Point in order to get an education, and then spent the rest of his life in the service of this nation. This is what truly makes great men. They are just there and do the job the best way they can, and they don't worry about the credit. Ike was a great man.

The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was cowardly? The bombing of those two cities saved countless numbers of American and Japanese lives. Had we gone ahead with the planned invasion of Japan it would've probably killed hundreds of thousands of marines and many more Japanese since they would've fought till the death. Well my grandfather who served in the US army during the war said that we didn't win the war the Russians did because if the Russian had not been raising hell on the eastern front the western front (where the US and the Allies fought) would have been more defended remember there were to fronts in WW2 and the eastern front were the biggest. And the Russians lost almost 6 million men during ww2.
