I love Tommy Lee Jones! I am so glad they got a REAL TEXAN to play the roll of Captain Woodrow McCall! No one else could have done him justice! They say that Tommy Lee Jones performed his own stunts in this moveie. He likes to ride & lives in San Saba ,Texas...(plays Polo too). Great actor...
This is the only scene of the film in which the federal government makes an appearance. It wasn't an accident that McMurtry depicted them as bullies who seize private property, not to mention their engagement in running down and killing Native Americans.
A fitting commentary which holds truth in modern times, as well as in 1878.
@Lovedethklok I do so agree with you !! These men had dignity, decency and feeling for justice!! If those three things came back we would have a new start for mankind!!
ok whip or quirt, and what I was talking about was not the anvil he put the scouts head on it was the iron he used to beat him with. Some object used in a stable I am sure. I am a woman, and used to the abuse of men so hate me if you wish, but I loved this movie but think this brutal part should not have been posted on You Tube is all,as many things are these days. So thrash out at me if you must, but they will only fall on deaf ear and blind eye. My Mind is set on this matter!!!
@jjjjJenny1 One: That first "large section of medal" would most likely be a brand as cued by it's unique shape and the fact that he pulled it out of a fire and proceeded to beat the man senseless with it.
Two: If you think this is violent then you should probably sell your T.V. and/or not watch anything made since 1950. Probably shouldn't read.....well......anything or listen to the radio either.
Three: Abuse and bigotry are both race and gender neutral.
Uhhhh, Jenny? You're correcting someone about an anvil, but I need to correct YOU, Dixon, the scout, isn't hitting Newt with a whip, he's quirting Newt with a QUIRT
You also have to put this into the context of the movie. Woodrow, never wanted to admit that Newt was his son, however, when he saw his son being harrassed, he LOST it. Woodrow was not a super violent man, but he knew how to fight as a former Texas Ranger. If you saw somebody beating one of your children how would you immediatley react? Now put that into context of the post civil war west. Great Scene!!
You have to put this in the context of the times. You can apply the sissified rules of todays behavior to yesterdays situations. People had more of a distrust of Govt back then as they do today. These folks had lived through some hard times and weren't about to take a bullys bullyshit. I only wish I had the cajone's that Woodrow did. I think most men do too.
@jjjjJenny1 You do realize this actually aired on primetime tv, like, twenty years ago, right? Yeah, it's violent. Honestly, though, you get more graphic with stuff you see on CSI or Criminal Minds, etc. If you ask me, I almost wish Gus had let Call finish...
When it comes to that, most of the time a simple fight would have worked. The scout harmed another man's child. (In the movie, Newt looked too old. In the book, he would have been about 14.) That doesn't deserve a "fight", that deserves exactly what happened!
@jjjjJenny1 If you were as badass as Captain Woodrow F. Call, And you saw somebody quirting your teenage son with a whip, would you not be pissed off? Also, That large section of metal is called an Anvil, and you spelled Metal wrong.
My favorite scene is when Gud shoots the outlaw who thinks he is out of range, but I liked this one, and the bar scene in Austin. I thought Comanchee moon was OK but Dead man's walk was a poor offering.
It,s just a damned shame that Calls' reaction cannot be accepted in this modern world, although it has been known to happen in certain parts of UK.......ahem! or so I,m reliably informed.
@Balshazar1 I agree. Civilization restrains human nature in many cases. If your family or friends get hurt by an asshole like that, no boudaries should be there to hold you back in stopping it. Call did what any man should do. However, in the present society some law looks into the matter for a month or two and that villain would be off with a fine and 4 weeks prison.
Lonesome Dove depicts what humans could be if there was no constant control from the government and law.
i reckon all knows that this movie was patterned after the cattle drive by oliver loving and charles goodnight. larry mcmurty was raised in archer county texas. the goodnight loving trail began in young county, one county to the south. lots of the movie really happened on the trail drive by the two cowboys, including gus being taken back to texas after his death. goodnight took loving back to texas after he died to bury him.
@102LBC Why wouldn't the army just shoot him? Simple, it's like most bullies, they can only operate when there is no resistance. Big talkers, used to bluffing their way in, but when Call roars in, knocks the spitter off his horse and proceeds to begin BEATING him, the uniforms instinctively know (1) Call is morally right, plus (2) they have nothing that will stand up to his anger. There's a crowd of witnesses, too.
charles goodnight...wasn't a man till he learned how to be one...n' it took...TEXAS for him to be so....he sure as hell didn't make a livin' in...ILLINOIS
@mean86chevy - absolutely right- the two best scenes from the best thing ever on TV- why can't they do something of this quality for TV again- I don't understand, but guess I'll just have to watch LD over and over and keep enjoying it !!!
Lonesome Dove was/is the greatest western of all time, I read the book back in 89, the characters were 'real' Even the little bull which led the herd for so long became a real character. In the book it fought a Grizzly to a standstill and I wondered if it would be pos to put it in the movie. The characters in the movie brought the book to life with realism seldom seen...thanks for posting....
Johnny Lee Miller played an excellent role in Dead Man's Walk as the young Captain Call. But, he must have done a study on TL Jones character in Lonesome Dove to pull it off. I love this movie, but it's not for the faint of heart.
my favorite all-time western. Call and Gus were bad-asses. That dip-shit needed an ass kicking and he got it. Everything in this western could have happened. Not a lot of unbelieveable bullshit. Larry McMurtry rules!
I know the scouts conduct is intolerable and he deserved a beating, but this isn't a fight, a fight is where two men go at each other, this is a man coming up behind another klnocking him of his horse licking him in the face and hitting him with a branding iron while he's still trying to get up, then beating him nearly to death, where I come from we call this an ebb exeuction via beating, cool scene though i was really tense becasue I always thought one of those soldiers would shoot him
@MAnnaconduit1 If you notice the old Sargent put himself between the officer and Call. Being an experienced soldier he knew any action by the officer would just make the situation worse. I doubt any dollar a day horse soldier would even think about acting without orders.
besides if a scout is in the employ of the us army he is considered apart of the army as he is then subject to their laws and to take orders, he is basically one of them, so when someone attacks him, your attacking a soldier in the eyes of the army.
despite the towns people and witnesis Call attacked the US scout, one word back to the command and call would be tried for assult, besides what could the towns people do, if they attacked us officers and soldiers they would have either been arrested, or shot in reprsials and the army could just say well they killed our boys so they were dangerous, In real life one of those officers would have just shot call in the back of the head, anyone who tried to do anything either would have been shot
@MAnnaconduit1 I think you've got it way too complicated. Army tries to bluff, Call calls the bluff, it's over. Everybody watching knew who was right and who was wrong. Besides, they're not in Washington behind a desk, they're in post-Civil War Wild West territory. Army was still 'finding itself' then.
no i am not, i am from a place where if you did this to any part of the military or anyone like this scout who was working with the army, they gun you down right on the spot. However i think i was a little cruel before, i wasn't saying that the scout didn't deserve a beating he did for what he did to newt. it was woodrow just administering his own form of justice, for someone who was in the army he should have talked to the commanding officer and embarrass him, instead of this.
Actually, in those times(and sometimes now) if someone was beating on a man's kid that way, the boy's dad probably would have shot him and the rest of the town would have dropped all the rest of the troops. The Army didn't and still doesn't have That much power over the citizens, as it Should Be!
I love that they kept the small detail from the book, that McCrae simply got on the Hell Bitch to rope Call. In the book, Gus was the only other rider she let get on and he mounted without her fighting him. Neat.
@mouser98k true but even back then, however I just realized that guys wasn't an officer but a scout. A civilian working for the Army that knows the land. So I can see how they just let him walk away. If it was that officer on the horse someone may have been hung I don't know but I think it could have happened.
@cwood4ever maybe so, but the point is that it would not have been just. the actions of Call's group were just, the actions of the government group were theft.
@cwood4ever Given the circumstances and atmosphere of this little town, those army dudes probably figured they were outgunned and going to lose. Remember, there was a shitload of people watching those clowns trying to steal that horse. Also, Call and Gus had VERY strong reputations that held in their favor.
BEST Western ever made bar none! Best ass whuppin' I ever seen on screen or in real life. With Lonesome Dove...They broke the mold! J. Frank Dobie would for sure be proud!
Is your dad the kind of soccer coach that would call a lawyer with his cell or is he the kind of father that would react like this? With all the 'idiot american male' shows, skinny jeans and bromances we find today (our master plan to forget how to be men) you don't realize we're forgetting how to be fathers too. Anyone who answers 'And teach my son violence is the answer?' it's already to late for you. You're fuckin' right teach him violence. Then some day this scene will make sense to him.
These are the real people of the Old West as I introduce you to those real true people of the Old West, as these are actually from now on and really the real true tales of the real American West and you can tell that they're even real far much better actors than Roy Rogers, Gene Autry and Tex Ritter & it's a done deal.
I am old enough to have watched probably all the movie greats...John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, Glenn Ford, Kirk Douglas, Burt Lancaster, and too many others to name. In some way they all became the men I wanted to emulate...but no one, NO ONE, comes close to Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones, when it comes to two great role models. Lonesome Dove would have been a "good" movie with any two good actors...but with Mr. Duvall and Mr. Jones, it is the BEST western I have ever seen. Thank you.
@terrymcgowan Just so you really know is that John Wayne was even a far much better real top best actor than Roy Rogers and Gene Autry as I think John Wayne is the real top best actor and he is #1 and top of the line and is even far much better than Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, do you really agree with me on that one? John Wayne - America's Classic Hero is for sure #1 top of the line and is really in the real right place for the right time and is much better for to be with than Gene and Roy, agree
@COWBOYMACLEOD Cowboy, I agree. I have friends that don't like the Duke. As I get older, I like him more and more. He didn't have range with his acting- but that's OK. He played one role his entire career, and better than anyone else. No one will ever replace him. One of a kind. I try to emulate his voice, but his character, his swagger, and his unique personality will never be duplicated.
@TheGoldcountry I agree that I'll never be deadand I'll live forever and ever. I like John Wayne more and more. He didn't have range with his acting- but that's OK. He played one role his entire career, and better than anyone else. I imagine that someone will ever replace him, as there'll be another John Wayne again someday. John Wayne's character, his swagger, and his unique personality will ever and forever be duplicated as there'll forever and ever be another John Wayne, YAHOO.
@COWBOYMACLEOD I agree with almost everything you said except one; that John Wayne didn't have range. Have you seen the Searchers? Maybe he wasn't obvious or showy with his range, but it was definitely there and well displayed in The Searchers.
@TheGoldcountry My goal is to become a real professional rodeo tie-down roper and that I'll never reitre from my calf roping, never, because when I'm at 99 years of age and also 139 years of age, I'm forever going to rope in the Mo'betta calf roping, Calgary Stampede, National Finals Rodeo and many other professional rodeos and open ropings all over both the USA and Canada forever and ever in real life and I'm gonna rope forever and ever, you know that I'm gonna rope forever, YAHOO :) :) :)
@terrymcgowan your comment...high five to that..this is the best western ever, most original and probably closer to the real days then any other popcorn westerns made..
@BadKarma416 Just so you really know is that John Wayne was even a far much better real top best actor than Roy Rogers and Gene Autry as I think John Wayne is the real top best actor and he is #1 and top of the line and is even far much better than Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, do you really agree with me on that one? love this film ;-), my only disappointment in this scene is with the script. People are "hanged" not hung, although the average army captain back then may not have been a scholar ;-).
Gus is a once in a lifetime character you meet who you never forget. Loves life, women, gambling and whiskey. Call was the hardworking straightman in the movie & book who Gus torments (with self satisfaction). Even George Strait (THE King of Country music included him in a song). Read the book. SO GOOD!
Lol you can tell robert duvall has never roped in his life....that lasso was tiny n his rope was unbalanced but I agree with everyone here! Great scene!! You don't fuck with a cowboy and his horse!
I never get tired of watching this scene. It is the best! Such a great shot of Woodrow as he kicks the "rude behaving bully", both feet are off the ground and we can really feel the power he unleashes on this man. When Gus ropes Woodrow and pulls him away from the man it's as if we can see the red haze engulfing Woodrow and we are looking through his eyes ourselves. Makes me want to take a swing at the old man myself. Just great action.
@4u5zding0 Just so you really know is that John Wayne was even a far much better real top best actor than Roy Rogers and Gene Autry as I think John Wayne is the real top best actor and he is #1 and top of the line and is even far much better than Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, do you really agree with me on that one? Say that "The Duke" is even the greatest cowboy of them all and he was really popular and John Wayne is our real favorite and is much better, do you agree?
@sheaneal2121 Just so you really know is that John Wayne was even a far much better real top best actor than Roy Rogers and Gene Autry as I think John Wayne is the real top best actor and he is #1 and top of the line and is even far much better and a lot more popular than Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, do you really agree and understand? @MAnnaconduit1 -- and what do you call it, when a man that goes after a defenseless boy, who won't fight you, with a whip
koa2341 7 months ago
besides if a scout is in the employ of the us army he is considered apart of the army as he is then subject to their laws and to take orders, he is basically one of them, so when someone attacks him, your attacking a soldier in the eyes of the army.
MAnnaconduit1 11 months ago
despite the towns people and witnesis Call attacked the US scout, one word back to the command and call would be tried for assult, besides what could the towns people do, if they attacked us officers and soldiers they would have either been arrested, or shot in reprsials and the army could just say well they killed our boys so they were dangerous, In real life one of those officers would have just shot call in the back of the head, anyone who tried to do anything either would have been shot
MAnnaconduit1 11 months ago
@MAnnaconduit1 I think you've got it way too complicated. Army tries to bluff, Call calls the bluff, it's over. Everybody watching knew who was right and who was wrong. Besides, they're not in Washington behind a desk, they're in post-Civil War Wild West territory. Army was still 'finding itself' then.
blueshirt94 7 months ago
@MAnnaconduit1 As we say in Texas - You're not from around here, are you?
saxguy1 4 months ago 2
@saxguy1
no i am not, i am from a place where if you did this to any part of the military or anyone like this scout who was working with the army, they gun you down right on the spot. However i think i was a little cruel before, i wasn't saying that the scout didn't deserve a beating he did for what he did to newt. it was woodrow just administering his own form of justice, for someone who was in the army he should have talked to the commanding officer and embarrass him, instead of this.
MAnnaconduit1 4 months ago
@MAnnaconduit1

Neat.

@cwood4ever in todays world, justice takes a back seat to authority
mouser98k 1 year ago
@mouser98k true but even back then, however I just realized that guys wasn't an officer but a scout. A civilian working for the Army that knows the land. So I can see how they just let him walk away. If it was that officer on the horse someone may have been hung I don't know but I think it could have happened.
cwood4ever 1 year ago
@cwood4ever maybe so, but the point is that it would not have been just. the actions of Call's group were just, the actions of the government group were theft.
mouser98k 1 year ago
@cwood4ever Given the circumstances and atmosphere of this little town, those army dudes probably figured they were outgunned and going to lose. Remember, there was a shitload of people watching those clowns trying to steal that horse. Also, Call and Gus had VERY strong reputations that held in their favor.

Thank you.

@COWBOYMACLEOD I agree with almost everything you said except one; that John Wayne didn't have range. Have you seen the Searchers? Maybe he wasn't obvious or showy with his range, but it was definitely there and well displayed in The Searchers.

Gus is a once in a lifetime character you meet who you never forget. Loves life, women, gambling and whiskey. Call was the hardworking straightman in the movie & book who Gus torments (with self satisfaction). Even George Strait (THE King of Country music included him in a song). Read the book. SO GOOD!
