  • wow that bend at 1:42 is so meannn

  • @puupyy look up the band Dream Theater. He's the guitarist for them, shreds on a guitar. Not my favorite, but no doubt he's incredible.

  • Love it, Can't get enough. Rock on my Brother.

  • Id like it more if you save the intense lines for buildups guthrie.... instead of constant 32nd notes ya know? idk i love your playing but i think you would say more if you chilled out a bit on the rapid lines :)

  • he looks like a homeless guy, but he ROCKS

  • Guthrie Govan and Gandelf; they are one and the same.

  • I won a 3 of those fret muters in a raffle at a private namm show, and the first thing I thought of was...sweet! Now I can play like guthrie govan! O_o

  • Amazing you must see the world in slow motion.

  • Does anyone know the purpose of that blue thing he has between the nut and the headstock? Does it improve his sound?

  • @MrRocknost I think it's a ponytail that he uses occasionally to mute his strings in case he wants to do some nasty stuff.

  • @MrRocknost Its a hairband. He uses it to mute the open strings when he does tapping stuff

  • good

  • Mother of God.

  • Who is John Petrucci?

  • Anyone know what picking techniques he's using? It seems like he's picking with the fingers at times.

  • @Poisonseed It's hybrid picking. Use both pick and fingers, means you can play pretty much anything anywhere you want with minimum effort.

  • 1:23 -- like a spider chasing a mad spider up the neck!

  • gotta love guthrie's face when he hears that A7 chord at the start xD

  • just amatour

  • He knows how to shred with taste, and taste is really all you need to turn anything with anything into a masterpiece.

  • Every time I watch this shit, it's like it's the first time again. The shock and awe hits me every time.

  • hey guth I know you do the states and sure, ok not sure you saw me post but i love pool, beer, and great guitarist and you need to come by and hang. hit me back and not like the CL whores. i will take it serious

  • y para qué voy a querer el backing track si par tocar eso necesito 4 manos mas?

  • I'm pretty sure he doesn't hit a single bad note

  • this is so fucking nice to hear

  • he has the pick of destiny

  • Will take a fucking bullet for Guthrie \m/ \m/

  • best 'beginning of the song face' ever

  • fantastic

  • 0:05-0:06

    expression of the great fart

  • that first face is priceless

  • people who don't like this don't have an ear for music. they are only accustomed to what they've heard on the radio. i could give a fuck less. this guy is amazing

  • je penses qu'il aurait pu jouer avec Mozart ou Chopin ou bien bethoven c'est un guitariste haut de gamme!!!!!

  • simply can't get enough of this videos. this is pure greatness and I'm thankful to become witness.

  • This sounds like a more distorted Larry Carlton in a way!

  • damn, why did it fade out

  • I don't get it.

What are you arguing about ?

    Just enjoy it or don't.

No one needs someone who says: This is shit.

If you don't like then don't watch it. It'S as simple as that. Period.

  • @TG9900 i don't know... somebody really needs to speak out about two and a half men.

  • disarmante..

  • The man's a genius of the fretboard...lots of style, lots of feel, loads of technique. If he wanted to do a straight blues without being showy, I'll bet he could do it in a heartbeat. Hats off to him. If you like the funky blues, please have a gander at this clip of my band. :-)

  • I think what a lot of people don't take into account with Guthrie, is that in his tone is a demand to be incredibly accurate with what he does. The guys technicality is off the fucking scale! To be able to play at that level, yet still incorporate your own unique quirks requires so much skill and talent. Stop being so snobbish about what 'qualifies' as 'blues' and just enjoy it for what it is! Mind boggling, bafflingly enchanting guitar wizardry!!!!

  • PUB SUCKS!

  • To me, this isn't blues :/

  • @badassrob94 indeed ^^ this is funky blues !

  • if he had kept his speed up at 1.43 they would have had to stamp on his guitar to put the flames out!

  • Fantastic technique but in my opinion it is totally incongruent with the requirements backing track: it sounds like a wasp in an empty beer can placed next to the speakers. He is of course a great guitar player but this has left me stone cold. Give me Mike Campbell - Petty's guitarist any day of the week.

And no I can't play like this and nor would I want to.

  • Requirements of the backing track? He giving it his own style. I'd take that over the same stale pentatonic bends and the like anyday.

  • @nlo13 I take your point and agree: there is no one style in which to solo over a blues track. However, I still feel that this solo - at least to my ears - is largely incongruent. Guthrie commences this tune with those "stale same pentatonic blues bends" (or at least scales) and then in my opinion loses it. Don't get me wrong, I think Guthrie is a wonderful guitar player, but in this track I believe there is a point where musicality gives way to a display of technical prowess.

  • *watches video*

    *looks at guitar in hand*

i swear he has more notes on his guitar...

  • it sucks that they cut it right when he was going into a cool jazz line!

  • Is he using hybrid picking?

  • @supertomate64 yes, as always

  • I find the critics of truly exceptional players like Guthrie generally do not have an understanding of the theory or notation and techniques involved so it becomes boring as they are just watching fingers move. Players who are at a level to appreciate what he is doing usually cannot help but be impressed. One of the world's best, I believe.

  • You gotta love that sickass vibrato!!

  • While I think Govan has amazing technique, and am quite envious, I'll only say that I prefer the more visceral style of Frank Zappa.

  • @loosofher so does guthrie ahah hes a MASSIVE zappa fan

  • i cant wait until this guy grows older. his technical ability is amazing, and plays with passion (sometimes), but his phrasing is still all over the place, actually i think its terrible, and not really melodic. with more maturity in his playing, hopefully his emotion will shine more, rather than sound like a billion fast notes all jumbled together that is hard to connect with and feel. lots of people can play fast, only some have really wonderful phrasing, hope he learns it, cuz he cud be great

  • @muzikislife9 Have you heard his album? Listen to it and I'm sure you'll change your mind. In my opinion, his phrasing is impeccable and sets him apart everybody else exactly for that reason; I haven't hear anyone play that fast and utilize modern techniques while still retaining amazing phrasing like he does.

  • @Havokreator i have some of his stuff from itunes. i learned about him cuz he was on the lee ritenour six string theory album (which is an amazing album, highly recommended), and he plays fives on there, and i really liked that song, but most of his other stuff is too much for me. im more into classic kinda stuff anyway tbh, but guthrie is one or the most interesting modern guys. maybe i'll give him another chance.

  • @muzikislife9 Guthrie Govan (born 27 December 1971) Yeah, maybe another 10 years when he's 50 eh?

  • Goodd dam.. He is a wizard and using his power too tlk too the guitar and tell it what too do :) just watch his wizardry mouth... Flawless :D

  • Gi' den gaz mester!! ;D hahahaa!

  • koleś czuje legato ;D

  • I don't usually like "Shredders" or faster players. But this guy can play

  • @waavy I feel the same. He shreds with class.

    amazing player!

  • Dont like this guy at all, idn get how people are saying hes in the top playes atm...

  • @freduleror I agree, this is absolute mindless shit. Anyone who thinks this guy is near the top is fucking delusional.

  • @nukethewhales13 I don't think you understand the subject matter and I feel he is at the top of his game speaking as a guitarist for almost 25 years. I would be curious to learn how old you are and what your experience with the instrument is and your training and knowledge of guitar music, in its entirety. In my experienced opinion, you are totally incorrect. Each to their own but I know you are wrong, sorry. Delusion? Well...

  • @nukethewhales13 I don't play electric guitar at all any more; not for about a decade. But I have been at it through every level of the industry over 25 years at the instrument. You are entitle to your opinion. Son. Cheers

  • hello guys.. we love this funky style of music, we funk it to the max, plus crazy guitar arrangements.. do check my band at this link.. you wont regret it.. thanx ;)

    /watch?v=KZJKPLo32aE&feature=related

  • Is there any tabs out there for this?

  • you can say more with less notes. motzart and chopin did not write entire symponies in 64th notes. 90% of this guys playing in incredibly technical but not suited for blues or soul music. He is an AMAZINGLY TALENTED musician, just too much of a showboat for certain styles of music. Body builders dont go around picking every heavy thing up that they can find because they know their exceptional talents have their place and not their place.

  • @ClosetLooner750

"...90% of this guys playing in incredibly technical but not suited for blues or soul music..."

=>Oh you have no idea. Type "Guthrie Govan Slow Winter Blues" or "Guthrie Govan Prowling Blues" or watch his clinics etc..

The point is: Guthrie can play everything... doesn't matter what... slow or fast...

I have often seen him playing slow stuff.

So don't be an ignorant and listen to ALL of his material...

  • The first 12 bars are tasty, and I like the lick at 2:20 near the end -- very cool.

The stuff in between is amazing, but for funky blues you should really slow it down with a little more phrasing. If I were him I would limit the shredding to one 12 bar section -- it would have more of an effect because it would stand out.

  • you people have no idea how wrong you are when you say no soul in his blues.... what he just played has more soul then yall will ever have....yep it is fast but that doesnt mean theres no soul... saying that guthrie is bollocks....well thans least to say ignorant... who the fuck you are and which aspect of life have you mastered to have the right to say that somebody is bollocks....

  • @dokaz are u refering to Hardysamnin comment?if so u miss understood him. he was actually saying GG is the bomb

  • Funky? hell no

    Blues? yeah right

    Shred beast? yep

  • @Fjord76 Guthrie is not just a Shredder, he can do funky stuff and hes just down right inovative

  • I love the discret chicken picking :D

  • had a guitar lesson from this man :D he clearly knows his scales too much though

    shame

  • Holy crap...I love this guy!

  • Govan is a better guitar player..but Vai is a better composer..imo of course

  • I could listen to this guy for about 5 minutes because of his incredible technical ability, but after that I'd turn him off and listen to the simple soulful leads of BB King making every note count. This guy will impress other guitarists (I am one), but no one else will actually want to listen to him play. It's incredibly proficient garbage.

  • @wcrimi3 /watch?v=oaIzEo013iI

  • @wcrimi3 I totally agree!

  • @wcrimi3 Dude, he has soul. He has it coming out of his ass. It's just soul at about a million miles per second.

  • Speed = no soul?

Someone needs to go back in time and tell Paganini and Chopin that then. This guy is the bollocks.

  • @Hardysamnin Yeah, dont forget Vivaldi and Mozart. No soul what so ever.....

  • @Hardysamnin FUCKING YES.

  • @Hardysamnin you heard paganini play? really? you must be old. and this guy is just another example of how all the technique in the world doesn't mean shit when you can't do anything but run scales fast as hell. where is the thumbs down button?? this shit sucks ass, its not even music, and you guys can go fuck yourselves if you disagree because you'd be wrong. this shit sucks so bad i've already muted it. go check out a guitar player who has skill and soul AKA Jimmy Herring.

  • @nukethewhales13 Lol, grow up =)

  • @nukethewhales13 Seriously what suck here is your ears and your musical awareness. This has nothing to do with just running scales fast as hell.In fact this is very complex playing.I guess he would not be that talkative in normal song but saying this is scale up and down shows you have almost zero musical awareness.

  • @Hardysamnin Are you insane? Govan is one of few players who can shred while maintaining melodic modality. It is not about sheer speed, it is how he is doing it and that actually requires feel. Each to their own, sure, but I find "feel" is often merely synonymous with mediocrity. I feel it is a pity you can't eppreciate a truly exceptional guitarist who out-shines most of the popular players heralded as the world's best. Enjoy the "feel" from the millions of average players as there is plenty!

  • @MrChevyMetcalf - this guy is the bollocks, the shit, the bomb. He's the bee's knees, the dog's danglies, the duck's nuts, however you want to phrase it is fine. I'll simplify it for you. In my opinion, he is the greatest living guitarist, and arguably the greatest ever. Do you even know who Paganini or chopin where?

  • this is the kind of stuff that money can't buy you

  • Lol olydave

  • It gets old when he play that fast

  • well, he's fast ........

  • must.. play... faaster.,

  • Im sorry steve vai, but i've got a new idol..

  • I feel like this video should be called, "how to play the geetar"

  • did not hear much funk

  • @outtacastatv funky blues is the name of the backing track. he was just being awesome on top of it.

  • @OlyDave well fuckin change it cunt

  • @outtacastatv now that was a bit unnecessary. i was going to try and make some clever quip relating to your post that would imply that i recently fucked your mother... and then i saw one of your videos. i can't even joke about bedding your mom after thinking about how badly your lumpy pentagonal head must have wrecked her vagina when you were born. that being said, i fuck your sister all the goddamn time... cunt. ;)

  • @OlyDave mom issues.

  • @OlyDave You trespassed the family rule! You're damned!

  • @OlyDave Well actually I watched his videos and I thought about the same thing when I saw his lumpy pentagonal head... Damnation aborted!

  • @outtacastatv no not funk... funkY.

  • 0:03 OMG ı can play guitar :D

  • @MercyfulMasterrika I Lol'd XD

  • Guthrie Govan, are u speaking to the guitar dude? You must be out of your mind... or, you are really fucking AEWSOME! xD

  • You are one cool cat Mr.Govan!! I'm enjoying all of these videos.

  • ABSOLUTELY PERFECT

  • I am not an ultra shredder fan, but I love watching his pick hand technique, he really uses the other fingers quiet a bit. That is certainly different with shredders in my humble opinion.

  • a bit of an etude...fish scaly .... but man that's some cool fish scaly playing

  • It is a Shur Guitar

  • @XMathis are you suhr?

  • @oscarsstuff Hahahaha *high five

  • AWEsome - would like to see some acoustic work

  • He needs hook up with Satirani....it would be the end of guitar heros and bury the old gods......

  • is that a carvin guitar? :)

  • ATLAS UFO ROBOT!!!!!!!

    WHERE'S IS YOUR BORN PLANET!!??????

    SUPERB INCREDIBLE FANTASTIC TECNIQUE

  • nice look at his mouth (hes really in to it)

  • the dude can shred. no doubt. but as for blues, this is atrocious. this isnt blues. this is a dude playing scales as fast as he can over a blues backing track. no soul. and doesnt even have a bluesy tone to it. this is shit.

  • @GLK2780 go die

  • @masoudnima hahah get educated kid. if you honestly think this is blues, youve never heard blues in your life.

  • @GLK2780 your opinion faggot

  • @GLK2780 its blues funk, it isnt supposed to have emotional bends, also its a major key he plays it in rather than minors man =]

  • @GLK2780 . in other words - he's saying alot about nothing much at all. whereas hendrix and SRV were lyrical players - every note and nuance intended and not a note or nuance in excess. He sure can play - like a master sculptor who prefers to use his talents to sculpt manikins rather than michael angelo's david.

  • @kharnvelzyghur haha well spoken.

  • @GLK2780 While I won't go so far as yourself by saying this is shit, I do have to agree. I'm more impressed by tone and feeling in written pieces (especially written pieces!) than I am technique. While it is necessary to have excellent technique to make your composition sound as clean and smooth as possible, I fee like people who just shred scales and use endless sweeps and fast finger tapping are essentially wanking into the listener's ear. Better than I could do, though. :)

  • @GLK2780 what were you expecting from him? Everyone knows what Guthrie does, he's not a bluesman, he's a professional guitarist, he's giving an example of what he can do over a funky backing track

  • @GLK2780 if yu played like dat, id praise yur playin too bud- who cares if its not blues- its beyond advanced and me and yu

  • weird that i have to watch a makeup ad before im allowed to see this genius

  • 1 strand of Guthrie's hair has more soul than all who has viewed this video put together...u do the math

  • @boogahed You hit the nail on the head. This is absolute genius.Even his fastest lines are tasty as hell!!!!!!!\m/\m/

  • cool but come on guthrie play some feel gees enough with the wank

  • Well there are different ways to define a musical genre; one is its historical context. In the case of the blues. It could said to be a slow and sad Negro based song becoming know around 1911; strictly a 12 bar in 3 lines of four bars each the second line repeating the first; the whole following a set chord sequence using flattened 5ths..the essential element being a soulful and sad emotionally intense experience. Gutherie is a technical wizard but are no breathing spaces...no soul!

  • @stratoboy3 HAHAHAHAAHAHA I LOLED SO HARD ON THAT COMMENT XDDDDDD in the whole impro, guthrie used the pentatonic scale like umm once xDDD hes going through the notes of the arpegios and thats what makes his soloing sound interesting... no offence, but running over the pentatonic scale over and over no matter how fast it is isnt interesting, just hear improvs from kirk hammett... it gets boring after a while imho

  • Stop arguing about his soul if you never met Guthrie --'.

Allways criticizing shred is the argument for the ones who are unable to play guitar...and who don't seems to realise the real thing : Guthrie can shred when he want because it's natural for him to use all parts of his instruments, but he can also play very slow, soulful and for me he's even more impressive playing this way. But these perfomances aren't on the web, because he don't want people to film his private showcase, he hate youtube

  • Very impressive but musically......very debatable.....blues is suppose to be a conversation with pauses and subtle phrasing.

  • @turockandar blues is supposed to be a friggin chord progression, every person can play how he wants... but if you really and TRULY want the "real blues" then you should get a black guy to play the minor penthatonic scale (idk if its spelt right, im not a native english speaker) over the same backing track, cuz thats how the blues were born... anyway, this are blues, and there's no way blues are supposed to be anything

  • guess this would qualify for EXPERT level

  • Guys, it's all about having fun. If you have fun by playing slow lines and things (which of course if perfectly fine) then go ahead, but he's obviously having fun shredding.

  • this guy is the fucking shit! I used to listen to all the shredders and got sick of it but this guy makes it what it should be!

  • fuckin insane. im watching this with my pants down

  • I've never heard a 12 bar blues so totally annhialated....

  • @synesthesia67

    Idiot.

  • @diza55555 I meant that in a good way...idiot...

  • @synesthesia67

Oh yeah. Like anyone was supposed to know.

  • @diza55555 you should have known..!!!

  • Lack of comprehension is not a good reason for critique... just cause you don't get it, doesn't mean it's bad music.

  • @tastytasters

I certainly can handle both, one of my favorite guitar players is joe satriani. But Im just saying that there is a certain element to the perfect note bended to just the right place to send shivers down your spine. Now im not sayin he has no soul because he certainly does. but look at the players who revolutionized this idea of soul.... and yes guitar players have gotten better since the 60s but you have to admit that in some situations playing just the notes sets the mood.

  • Guthrie > Your fave guitarist. Get over it bitches.

  • Awesome tecnique, incredible playing but IT DOESN'T SAY ANYTHING, it sounds like: exercise 1, exercise 2.

  • @mlademamehocekura go run along now and listen to some b.b. king, and save your arguments for someone who cares

  • Playing with soul isnt jamming as many notes as you can into 30 seconds. Soul is playing the right 10 notes in 30 seconds.

  • @soul41only now now, look who just took a big shit out of his mouth

  • @soul41only Or in Guthrie's case, the right 24 billion notes... who cares how many? each note is as good as it could possibly get, and even more stellar is that this is improvised. Technique vs soul is just stupid because people like you can't handle it when someone comes along and can actually accomplish both.

  • @soul41only So 11 notes is not soul, then? You are going to limit creativity? Different people interpret things differently, bud. Because you don't see the beauty and soul, doesn't mean it's not there. Since when are YOU the king of soul?!? Just get outta here, troll.

  • massive

  • 0:45 first time i see that trick

  • Fucking fantastic player.

  • i love how his mouth moves its like his talking to the guitar making it sound like this

  • Comment removed

  • tell me that was improvised... and my head will blow again.

  • @metalrhoads

    that was improvised for sure

  • Mind blowing. So awesome!
