  • Great video. Duckworth is a good photographer

  • I love the video. Very informative! I have a Calumet Genesis system from when I first began to experiment with off camera lighting, but now I want a more portable system since the monolights are pretty heavy.

The Quadra has the same mount as the other elinchrom lights, correct? I have a Speedotron BD that has an Elinchrom mount.

Can the Quadra system take umbrellas? I have a Softlighter that I love to use, but didn't see any umbrella mount in the video.

  • @TheFlashCentre, can you ID the track at 0:59, please?

  • does the quadra require its own accessories, or are they the same as the BXRi etc?

  • @Maxsdiscos there are a few accessories specifically for the quadra; 13.5 cm reflector (comes with the head), 18cm reflector (takes grids) and a 40x40cm softbox.

Most importantly, there is an adapter which allows larger elinchrom accessories, with the standard EL mount to be used. This incorporates a heavier duty stand mount so the weight is not held by the small quadra head.

  • the quadra and ranger rocks

  • Is Adam a Nikon or Canon user?

  • @Maxsdiscos He uses a Canon EOS 5D Mark II in this video and all the pictures on his site have that "Canon look" about them.

Love the pictures of the girl in this vid. You can see more of them on his site.

  • @Solarfactor I have seen him performing in other videos using Nikon.

  • @Maxsdiscos In that case, he probably uses both and chooses between them when he wants a different look. :)

  • @Maxsdiscos I take back what I said. According to the EXIFs of his pics on Flickr, he uses a Nikon D3/Phase One, and has a history of using Nikon.

  • @Solarfactor Theflashcentre are Canon users, so that may have something to do with it.

  • @Maxsdiscos Yes.

Lenses used in this were the 85 f/1.8 and 24 f/1.4L for anyone who is interested.

Adam Duckworth is a great photographer. I'm seriously considering one of his workshops.

  • @Maxsdiscos He's using a canon 5D mark 2 in the video

  • He was over pumping this Elinchrom. It isn't that good. Can you imagine when he get a hold of the Profoto D1 Air 1000 w/s Monolight ,, He maybe going to shit his brain out! lol

  • @mcheng102 @mcheng102 I don't think the lighting unit you mentioned is anywhere near as portable as the Quadra, is it? The cost is also considerably higher. Profoto stuff is the best, no question, but it comes at a price.

  • @mcheng102 There's no doubt that Profoto is lovely, but, a kit of two of those heads is £3000. And it isn't battery powered. For the same money you could have 2 full 2 head Quadra kits, that's 4 heads and 2 packs.

  • @TheFlashCentre I would still get the Profoto D1 Air 1000. I would just save and save. Get the best and will never need to upgrade them. I would never go down grade. All photographers should do the same as well. Look at it as a investment for yourself.

  • @TheFlashCentre BXR-i 500 / 500 kit is cheaper but it has more power than Quadra. Why is that and what are both systems good for? Can you shoot outside with BXR-i system?

  • @rucka12 BXRi is mains power, Quadra is battery. Battery systems are always more expensive than the equivalent mains units. You can shoot outside with BXRi but you'll need a product like the Innovatronix Explorer XTSE to provide location mains power (or a very long extension cable) :-)

  • @TheFlashCentre Ohh I see. Please pardon my ignorance, I'm still learning. :) Thank you for that. I'm looking to start learning about off-camera lights photography and nothing out there seems to be as good as Quadra set. Just another stupid question, if you can bother to answer please; can I use my flash unit with Quadra 2-heads? Many thanx.

  • @mcheng102 If you enjoy shooting shallow DOF with large apertures, you will find Profoto too powerful. It's a real pain to have to resort to ND filters on lights or lenses just because the flash can't be turned down low enough for f/1.4 The 400WS Quadra is perfect for shallow DOF work.

  • I just got the elinchrom ranger quadra with 2 A heads and Elinchrom 27" WHITE MAXISOFT REFLECTOR - ELR27W... is my impression or the beauty dish produce less light at the center creating a shadow (barely noticeable) and spreads the light all around the model? When move the light meter from center it reads almost 1 stop over, should I get rid of the beauty dish and have one of those softboxs in your video?

  • Please tell me the music that was used in this video. :(

  • I bought a Quadra and a few modifiers off you guys last week. Can't wait till it all arrives. May I also say that your videos were a big help when it came to decision making and purchases.

  • CONGRATULATIONS BEAUTIFUL WORK!

    A BEAUTIFUL LIGHT VERY PRETTY!

    ABCS

    FABIANO SANCHEZ (BRAZIL)

  • Sorry for "off topic" @TheFlashCentre, but can anyone ID the tracks at 0:59 and 2:01?

  • Adam Duckworth looks alot like Philip Bloom ....or maybe the other way around...

    Nice pics BTW

    cheers

  • Kind of expensive for 400 w/s ... And I need more than one pack.

  • omg my name is adam duckworth also haha

  • Sorry. I was having difficulty in posting my questions. Thank you for your response.

  • Hello,

I specialize in location portraiture and will be buying my first set of lights soon. I'm trying to decide between the Elinchrom Ranger or the Quadras. Can the Quad heads be used with the Ranger packs? Also, I see the Quadra packs are asymmetrical so I can't fire both heads at full power at the same time, correct?

  • @cyde92 ranger heads can be used with quadra packs but not the other way round. You are correct that you can't have 2 heads on the same pack set to the same power. However, in portraiture you rarely require exactly the same power from both heads. A second pack would give you this ability (as would moving one of the heads back a bit)

  • Will the Quadra heads work with a Ranger pack?

  • This will be my first set of lights. I specialize in location photography. I'm trying to decided between the Quadras or the Ranger system. Can you use the Quadra heads with the Ranger power packs? Also from what I've read about the Quadra power pack, it is not possible to fire both heads at full power at the same time, correct?

  • Is it possible to use the Quadra Heads with the regular Ranger power packs? Also, The Quadra pack is asymetrical, so I won't be able to fire both heads at full power at the same time, correct?

  • what modifier is he using at 1:03? Anyone know?

  • @jmrabbit the elinchrom 1m rotalux on an EL mount adapter with a deflector set.

  • love this video, im thinking of getting these lights. adam how do you get that effect where the girl is sitting on the red settee? that white fashion effect look?

  • Which modifier is that at 1:14?

  • @bbs3721 it's the Elinchrom 1m octa rotalux but with no diffusers, there is also a deflector on the head, this works like a beauty dish but is much more portable.

  • @bbs3721 I think its a normal rectangular softbox, probably a Rotalux Softbox Quadra 70x70 cm

  • "reasonably priced"...? Absolutely! Cost far less than Broncolour and Profoto 7b! I want one!

  • If you guys worried about the price of the ranger then the d-lite it 4 kit is best for you the same power output but lot cheaper.

  • @rustynasty143 thats the kit I got at the moment, got 4 of em, they are quite suprisingly satisfying....but a smaller, even more portable kit would be awesome ! My question is, what is the light quality I wonder, dlite 4 vs the quandra vs a profoto set vs a bowens etc....I think it's time to hit google and see if anyone else has asked these questions yet !

  • ya great flexibility bit out of most price range though!

    top images adam!

  • what song is this?

  • This is great coz you can use it indoor and outdoor and very portable too. The price is just right compare to the other brands i love the to go kits with two heads, stand, remote wireless triggering and an umbrella in a nice little hard plastic case.

  • Many people complaining about the price of this little light considering there are studio lights out there that are double the price but its the same power and versatility of this little beast. Its simple really if you don't like it don't buy it.

  • We think the Quadra is actually very reasonably priced.

To use a set of EL500 outdoors will require a battery unit like the Innovatronix Explorer. As nice as it is, it's very heavy and relatively limited so far as the number of full power flashes for that weight.

  • There aren't many systems that'll let you pack 4 heads, 2 packs, 3 batteries and 2 softboxes into a carry on bag. Especially if you remember that a singe head at 400WS has about the same output as 6 speedilghts.

Of course you can always rent a Ranger Quadra kit, £35 for the weekend maybe closer to your budget...

  • @TheFlashCentre What are the model numbers of the softbox, umbrella and other accessories that Adam is using? I am wondering what are the most useful accessories to purchase for the head. Also, would you recommend buying a separate pack for each head instead of of wiring 2 heads asymmetrically to one pack?

  • @downloadher He uses a 70cm square rotalux, 1m octa rotalux, both with the EL mount adapter and a deflector set.

2 separate packs is more versatile, and you have 400ws per head. However, there are now 5 and 10m head cables so postioning with a single pack is less of an issue than it was.

  • Very good but at £1493.85 it is out of the price range of a lot of people. That is bloomin expensive

  • @FunnyBoysFilms I agree, and I think they are just trying to make people think they need all this. My EL 500's are just as portable and as I bought them secondhand a fraction of the price of this set. I've been looking at some of the accessories available from Elinchrom and I fail to see how they can charge these prices for gear that is basically just pressed aluminium and fabric. I'm refering to the softboxes/reflectors/honeycombs, Not the lights.

  • @airscrew1 One thing I noticed with other brands of light modifiers is that they get too heavy when finally assembled - Elinchrom is feather light in comparison and a snap to assemble. Comparing equally capable modifiers you'll see that Elies maybe even cheaper:)

  • Is this significantly enough better to warrant not only its price, but for abandoning the current system you may have - multiple flashes, for instance?
