Hai. I have same problem with elevators and sometimes with doors. If you test map and look how elevator is you can rotate that in SDK and get it right. I have solved few door problems with that way.
One question.... How do you make... like.... uhh.... I clicked on the elevator door model,I went to the Sequences tab,there is a Idle,Close and Open sequence. How to make it so it changes sequences?
do you know how to do an elevator with 1 button for 1 level. then so it shall stop by each levels and not just go forward? then if you press button 1 it goes to first level. then if you press button 2 it goes to second level. then if you press lvl 4 it goes to that level.... i want that sort of elevator :p and i know its abit more advanced... but im in need of it for the map im building.... if you know could you help me? please? :}

You know its a lot easier if you simply "Parent" the model to the func_tracktrain. That way you don't have to make the func_track_train bigger than a 16 x 16 unit cube. Just name your func_tracktrain "my train" and then in the prop_dynamic's Parent field enter "my train" and you're done. No need to actually build a func_tracktrain around your model.

Uhh...I'm not quite sure what you mean, the elevator model you can change into whatever, as long as you parent that prop to the func_train. You don't even have to use a prop just make a surface that is a func_train. If this isn't what you were asking people be more clear.
If you have just a block or a brush, any type of brush that you want to use just make it and presss CTRL + T and in the class just type func_train. Does this make sense? I'd make a video showing you if you want.

so how can we make it go up and down, but only once it has stoped at each end (ie. it wont change direction mid track) Also: making doors:1 for the elevator itself and one each for top and bottom that open and close at the right time
To fix the problem of the lift spawning or being th wrong way...go to the elevatar properties...flags...fix orientation! that should do it!...nice vid but i recomend visiting half-wit2...where u can find oout how to make those doors what are in the game hl2!
Guys, at 3:04, Hold shift, click and drag and Hammer automatically makes Path track 2 for you. Just a heads up.

Why don't you snap to the grid, it'll be much easier to place the path_track if you want your elevator yo go straight.

And with block elevators you can't parent because its not an entity..
