I remember when I played Unreal Tournament 99 back in the day for the first time. I was amazed..till this day I still love that game and it has some great graphics and physics. Facing Worlds..when I saw the Earth floating my mind exploded all over the room. Haha. What makes me laugh though is that Earth graphic from Facing Worlds back in 1999 is still a lot more accurate and looks better than the graphics of the Earth in Call of Duty Black Ops zombie map Moon.
I remember seeing that video back 15 years ago..... it was like oh my god those are the best graphic ever seen...... I was playing doom 2, duke 3d and Blood so Unreal looked so much better.
I also managed to get an early alpha or beta version from some warez website back then..... it was super slow on my pentium 133mhz, which was like one of the best pc you could buy back then.
the final version of Unreal looked great but the game was boring as shit, quake was much more fun.
Unreal 4ever. They brought the game technology we play today, no one can doubt it. Only an asshole would. Still, their experimental music and their system is and was so awsome...
@PanterAmetal100 Hell it's not only graphics. The tracker music is beautiful, so full of warmth and dynamism. You hardly ever get music like this nowadays... though Deus Ex Revolution sounds like it's going to have a similar, tracker-inspired soundtrack.
@dumbasspauldentonkin ...Composed by the same person, actually. The main composer of both Unreal and of DEHR is Alexander Brandon, or as known in the tracker community, Siren.
I still remember when I first played this and some friends were watching me play it. I stepped out of the Vortex Rikers and into Nyleve Falls, and my friend said, "Whoah.... Quake what?"
They just released a NEW version of it. Croteam was bragging about Serious Sam HD and how it could produce over 1,000,000 polygons on screen with active sprites!
what is this? aint this Unreal? like the First Unreal? i have Unreal Anthology with Unreal Unreal II Unreal Tournament and UT2004.......... aint this Unreal?
I remember seeing a demo of this at Media Play. Media Play use to have this big display at the entrance that had shelves with software on it and a TV that played demos of upcoming software titles. And you picked which one you wanted to see a preview of by pushing a button with the picture of it on it.
My god I never managed to finish this game. I'm not even sure I went anywhere near the end of it. I remember going to a city in the sky before giving up. Then I lost my saves and never went that far ever again. I must have tried 10 times or so in 10 years. You don't find shooters that long anymoar.
As for another impressive piece of in-game graphics from that time, look for the video GDYRahM_GQM '"Into the Shadows", PC-demo by Triton, 1995'
There, spot the complex lighting and multiple detaiuled shadows under the characters and around the pillars. I was blown away when watching this in 1997 or so.
my comment was a little ambiguous, because youtube shows the comments in chronological order. i was talking about Into the Shadows (ITS), a never released RPG by the demogroup Triton. there's a video about it on youtube too.
@popculturehero There is a website somewhere I got a high resolution texture pack for Unreal 1 (did only work for me with the original Unreal, not with Unreal Gold). Using this it looks even better!
They were working already on it in 1996?? The Year Quake1 came out? Unbelievable. Unreal is really unreal.

@kevenzz Wait....DO YOU STILL HAVE THOSE EARLY BETAS AND ALPHAS?!?!
If so,some of them could use to the Unreal community (like oldUnreal and BeyondUnreal) ,since there are only 3 betas of Unreal.

@kevenezz You probably only played the first 4 levels. It's only past these levels that the real game starts...

I rember this game sooo bad, i was like 9 years old when i first played it :D

Still one of the best FPSs. Today games just feel to easy, to simplified and un-imaginative compared to ones from the late 90s-early 00s :/

Ever play Serious Sam?

THAT IS FRIGGIN CRAZY!
johnlewisbrooks 2 years ago
The thing I remember the most is the ABSOLUTELY CRAZY weapons!
Remember the flamethrower weapon? You could also spray the liquid in the pure form and it would spontaneously catch fire?
Think it was Unreal II.

This is Unreal, but an Alpha version.
I would KILL to have this, just to see what the game used to look like and how far it has come.

oh man, it looked so fuckin impressive back then. But still plays great today and got a feeling to it like no other game ever released.

Through the looking glass. Yes this demo would certainly have impressed me in 1996. The original unreal still does look pretty good to me anyway.
