Being a believer in cosmic balance, Kaiji is a necessity in our world. In the 90's characters had noses, then the advent of moe came which reduced noze sizes to tiny dots. This left tons of nose energy pent up in the universe, building to dangerous levels. Sensing this, Fukumoto channeled this energy into works such as Akagi and Kaiji, providing a release for nose energy and thus saving the world.

i really valued this show because it's funny how real it is. many people criticize it because of the art style, but I think they just miss how shiny todays top shows are (ppl already named them before me), and cant value the story and characters, because they are stuck at complaining about graphics. I found this extremely entertaining and it made me think.

Because the time skip goes on to a future where everything that previously happened was shit on tremendously.

After that the ending makes the last quarter or so of the show totally fucking pointless. Not only does poor whatsherface literally *stop existing* in the last 10 minutes of the series right after the wedding, thus making the entire rescue effort to saver *her specifically* pointless, simon leaves all of his friends for no reason to live an unfruitful life as a fucking hobo. Literally.

He MADE the show and they shit on him repeatedly.

Yeah, I guess Kaiji could be called a masterpiece; I've only watched the first five episodes, and I've already had to look away (I can't understand spoken Japanese, so I read the subs) because I couldn't bear to see what was happening. That's a pretty rare occurrence for me in an anime; in fact, before today (and my Kaiji-athon), it has happened a grand total of ZERO times. Anything that freaks me out that much HAS to be good.

Because animation != character design. The character design is terrible. The animation and art direction, however, is fantastic for a TV series. Watch Kaiji's speech before they walk the beams on the rooftop and take an overall look at the series. Things like noodle people, unaligned facial features, fucked up perspectives, sudden drastic loss of detail and color pallets just don't exist in Kaiji. The art remains mostly seamless and the animation is very smooth. It's a very well produced series.

honestly, Kaiji has a great heart though. That other guy with the glasses ( was honorable too; if you see his death scene on the bridge, it really is memorable to remember how he covered his voice so he wouldn't distract Kaiji as he fell to his death. Are most of the characters sludge, sure: that espoir showed that except for that same older dude with the glasses. Though a lot of them are rather interesting, like that Chairman, Hyodo who talked about sincerity.

I prefer Kaiji. Though I love how both Kaiji and Akagi have a serious approach to showing gambles and psychological ideas.
