Think of guitar solos, the same applies for drums. it doesn't have to be like a straight up buddy rich-by himself-no other music playing- kind of solo with fast rolls blah blah blah ... I understand why you say it's not because usually we think of a drum solo as not part of a song. but think of " I'm Lost Without You" by blink-182 , the snare part at th end is absolutely a solo, even tho it's part of the song

Remo controlled sound head, turn the lugs up high on top and kinda high on bottom. that should get you kind of that sound but with a little bit of a ring.

i like that sound too... i tune the batter head almost as tight as i possibly can. i then pull the snares tight and tape a tissue between them and the bottom head to reduce buzz from being so tight
