It's an officially licensed Unix distro which, if you didn't know, is also where linux came from. So, by calling it an epic failure you're really saying that linux is as well. :)

Apple is even worse - They bundle the OS and the hardware together. To do iphone development you need to buy a Mac! That is how they get you... Linux is a kind of OS, Ubuntu is the most common version of it, I believe. Ubuntu is a great OS, in my opinion, you can Google it for more information. BE CAREFUL! it does not have good hardware compatibility, and I made a terrible mistake while installing it.

you can make a new partition (on your slave drive) and run ubuntu from the CD, click install, and choose the new partition you made, follow the steps, and you have your ubuntu dual-boot on your slave.

When you install linux it will automatically suggest an automatic repartition of your drive to split off some of your hard drive for linux, your xp will be there and so will ubuntu, when you startup you can choose which one you want to use.
