The truth is, if we lived in a nation as poor as Mexico that bordered a nation as rich as the US and crossing meant our children might eat, then we would cross too.
first of all, please don't label all of Mexico as "poor". There is obviously a class system there just as there is here. The poor who do come to the US often do so to find better job opportunities because they cannot find work in their community and cannot afford to live in a city so that they can get a college education (since it is not an issue to afford education b/c it is free). So this representation of all Mexico being poor is so simply because that is what is seen in the US.

Once we've created a path to citizenship, we need to begin cracking down on businesses that hire illegal immigrants. Sales taxes? Are you kidding me? What about INCOME taxes? Sales taxes are much less and don't go to the federal government (which is the big spender).

There are over $3 billion from unclaimed immigrant taxes ! Over 70% of immigrants pay income taxes and ger nothing back-it goes to your pocket! And who do you think is paying for baby boomers' retirement? Immigrants. Who's keeping prices low? Immigrants. Who works harder and keeps jobs in US? Immigrants. Or you prefer those same jobs to go to China and India?

exactly what job is it that an American won't do? Illegals ARE taking jobs by undercutting the free market system. it doesn't allow for true competition when someone can undercut theri costs by paying under the table. it makes for an unlevel playing field. Diversity is great, but come here legally. Is it easy to gain citizenship? no, and it shouldn't be either. If you obtain something of value for little/no effort you don't really cherish it for very long.

He's blowing smoke. A long-term guest worker program like he's implying wouldn't work: "guests" would have U.S. citizen children and would settle down and would eventually be granted an amnesty. It was a scam when Bush/Kennedy/et al proposed it; what is it when Gravel does the same?

I agree with Mike's views on this issue completely, but I think there's one component he's missing. Once we've created a path to citizenship, we need to begin cracking down on businesses that hire illegal immigrants. This, along with new trade agreements, will help to remove the incentive for people to immigrate to the country illegally.

Whilst I disagree with Gravel's solution..because it would be the death of Social Security, but I can certainly see where he's coming from, I have a great deal of respect for the chap. His points about NAFTA and its effects on both jobs here and in Mexico could not be more accurate.

"Guest" workers... this is not the American way. This is not how my grandparents got here, nor your parents or grandparents Mike. If there is an underground of people working illegally in this country, and there is, it is the people who employ illegal workers to the detriment of everyone else that must be made to pay the price. If you're in this country working legally... you're on the path to citizenship. Period.

I'm with Mike, I think he paints the whole picture accurately and all things considered.
You notice that the first thing he said is that WE NEED TO PROTECT OUR BORDERS and STOP the INFLOW OF IMMIGRANTS into this country.
Okay, so no more of that. That's his first point. Plain and simple.
Then he addresses the other aspects, what about those already here, and what about the NAFTA issue, the root of why their so desperate to get overhere even to the point of breaking the law.

He also is a strong supporter of the Fair Tax which would make it impossible for illegal immigrants here to avoid paying their fair share in taxes.
