@wild0hawk@wild0hawk No shit, sherlock. Back then did they act it off as legitimate? Yeah. Today? No. Nobody thinks it's real anymore. It's theater. It's not presented as real. Do you go to a movie and bitch about how the movie was fake and not real? What about TV shows? Fictional books? Everyone KNOWS it's not real, it's entertainment dipshit. If you don't like it; fine. To each their own. But comments like the one you just made makes you look like pretty damn stupid.
Blassie was scared of Riki & who blames him for that as Riki refused to agree to Blassie being the winner... Blassie was scared because Riki was a genuine tough skilled hard bastard & you could give Blassie credit for even getting in the ring with him... His exit in the first round pretending to hit the ring post was as good a reason as any but anyway thanks for the brood Freddie & I-wouldn't tackle ANY of them as even the little one's are tough... Now if they'd only read my stuff & be smart...
notice also the japanese commentary is being spoken over the tape. There is a definite difference in the audio levels. This was a japanese broadcast, but the match was from the olympic auditorium in LA.
This is surprising. This match is nearly fifty years old, and it shows the American wrestler portrayed as a bad guy and the Japanese guy is the hero. Nowadays in the strange fantasy world of pro wrestling a foreigner who wrestles a "real American" is automatically the villain, even if he's only from as far away as Canada. And when you watch the audience nowadays, it's like watching a National Front rally. Were the wrestling fans of nearly half a century ago more sophisticated?
this match was done in Japan. So the foreigner IS the villain
Although Rikidozan became famous in Japan fighting American wrestlers who were portrayed as villains, I believe this match took place in L.A. This Youtube video is apparently taken from a Japanese rebroadcast of the American TV show. Notice that the ring announcer is American, as is the referee, and Rikidozan is introduced to the crowd as "a great champion from the orient".
it's in Japan. Hogan mentions this match in his book. It's from March 28th 1962. You asked if wrestling fans back then were more sophisticated. It's because in Japan wrestling is more respected. Even for the crazy moves over there they just give a slight clap.
Hogan mentions in Japan Blassie was so feared after this match because he bit Rikidozan after he giged his forehead. Thn sucked the blood out of his head and spit it in his face.
Notice that when the ring announcer starts talking 17 seconds into the video he is speaking English and is clearly American, as is the referee Johnny "Red Shoes" Dugan. Feel free to Google that name. This match took place in L.A. Rikkidozan may have fought Blassie in Japan, but that is a different match. You are clearly well-read on this subject but I respectfully suggest you erred in claiming this match was in Japan.
This match and date is regarded as one of Japan's best. Hell even Blassie mentions it in his book. sorry for trying to educate you. next time I'll know you prefer to be wrong then listen to someone else. I'll leave this topic alone now.
I saw this live on KTLA, channel 5, LA. Unusual for a title change to take place on TV in LA in those days.
After the match, an outraged Blassie appeared in the dressing room yelling, "I'm going to speak to my very good friend President John Kennedy about this!"
The California State Athletic Commission supposedly fined Blassie $500 for ripping off referee Johnny "Red Shoes" Dugan's shirt.
The (English language) play by play announcer is the legendary Dick Lane.
Hey Timmy3000, You're probably quite well aware of this, but in addition to wrestling, Dick Lane was far better known as theTV play-by-play voice of the LA T-Birds of Roller Games, and prior to that the LA Braves of Roller Derby! Now if anybody could come up with footage of him calling Braves games, that would be so cool!
Freddie Blassie was the Champion when I was growing up in Los Angeles. I sure loved him. So many fond memories watching the Wrestling shows at the Olympic Auditorium in LA and the old Muncipal Auditorium in Long Beach.
