@scottstm Hello Scott - I came along it was a marvellous experience - very uplifting - I am working on peoples happiness at work and wonder of you would talk to me about how it felt to be involved and complete a survey questionnaire related to experience at the time? Could help to demonstrate how happiness and connectedness to a task. job, people leads to superior performance. Get in-touch if you would like to help. Russell 07545 777685
I remember seeing this and my friends husband asking plaintively "How much MORE are they taking off?" Denis Quilley and George Hearn were fantastic, and after "I am what I am" there was TOTAL silence then 90% of the audience stood for George Hearn. Thanx for the memories :)
I saw the show at the time and i don't think it has been bettered, they were probably the only production to use the deep voices at the beginning and it worked, George Hearn was also the best singer to play Albin and who could forget Dennis Quilley superb, it was a short run as mentioned before which was a huge shame.
Saw this London Original Cast production when it was on... season didn't last due to the hysteria of the time of the scare of AIDS... shame... it was such a wonderful production... with George Hearn...wish such stage productions were recorded and kept for prosperity sake ... and reproduced for DVD market ... which am sure there are lots of us out here would get a copy...for our library ! I am a musical fan...
I saw this production of "La Cage Aux Folles", at the London Palladium, all those years ago. I'll always remember George Hearn's performance of "I Am What I Am". It was electrifying and breathtaking and heartbreaking, all in one.
@Limpandtotheleft - My mother believed that hysteria, and got us the cheapest seats possible, and wouldn't let me use the theatre restroom, or go to stage door---even though we always went to stage door after seeing shows. I wish I'd been brave enough to go to stage door anyway, but I was very young, and London was a strange city (we were visiting from Canada).
I can't remember who wrote the song but it is absolutely superb. This production was stunning - I was lucky enough to see it live and the hairs stood up on the back of my neck about four times in it - the sgn of really great theatre.
Last year I saw six trannies mime it in a bar in the Philippines - even better.
Despite being a Brit, I think Broadway generally has the edge on the West End in the slick and polish of musicals. Having said that, I've seen various productions of La Cage and footage of the original WE and BW casts and I do not think anyone touches the Brits for pulling off a show like this. This footage demonstrates the humour and character of the West End at its best. - Oh and I recently saw the new London revival and it's AMAZING, for me, the must see show for 2009, forget Priscilla!
I saw this as a 15 yr old...did not even know I was being taken to the Palladium.........older ex boyf !!.but the memory remains with me forever..Hearn and Quilley were amazing
brought back so many brilliant memories this clip... i was 21 and living in plymouth, my home town when I came up to London for a long weekend to see this show, which was phenomenal. i'm now 42, live in london and took my 16 year old nephew to see the new production at The Playhouse only a few weeks ago! A timeless musical... you must go see!
I've just come back from seeing the latest production at The Playhouse in London. One word - PHENOMENAL! Go and see it - best night I've spent in a theatre in years!
I can't say how fantastic it is to see this clip. I was in this original production and remember all these performers, several of whom are sadly no longer with us including darling Denis. It was an amazing show that should have run and run. Thank-you for posting this.
Dearest, magical Denis and the wonderful London Cagelles.
Such fond and happy memories of a show which never deserved to close so early, and fondest memories of Denis, the loveliest man in the West End. Hope he is laughing, singing and sipping Sancerre somewhere.....
i can't help but smile whenever i watch this!!!

I remember being taken to see this show. Front row, stalls.
And until the end, when wigs were removed, it wasn't clear which performers were men or women.
Absolutely stunning!
It was a disgrace that it was taken off in the midst of a tabloid-fanned wave of hysteria about getting AIDS from theatre seats!
