Hailing from Columbus I hail all great music from the Buckeye State. Cleveland is a true hellhole and only place that could have spawned The Dead Boys. Stiv,RIP.
Ah some of the comments are sure funny. GnR version better 'cos it's more 'refined'!? A bit sad if you have to take the edges of something like this. I think the DB's version is too 'studio', but this version cuts it, despite the vox recording. Check out the RFTT's version (better again), but this has lifted my opinion of Dead Boys no end
@BadassMMA No worries, its pretty easy to mistake this one for the original. Two members of the Dead Boys were apart of the original line up of Rockets from the Tombs( Cheetah Chrome still plays with them).
@BadassMMA I agree, music taste is subjective. I think it's pretty dumb to get in a fight(specially over the internet) over music. The world would be fairly boring if we all liked the same thing.
Great thing about GNR is that they are the first to say how great the origonal is. Axl even says in the linar notes in the spagetti incident to do yourself a favour and go buy the origonals!!!!! GNR forever!!!
I dunno what the argument is all about, but you have to be really retard to underestimate this band. Without them, gnr wouldn't have ever been, no matter which lineup you're talkin' about. The Dead Boys are all time classics, and a loved band to Axl and Duff.
i was first introduced to this song through guns and roses greatest hits as much as i enjoy listening to that album, fuck it the original is better this tune kicks raw ass! coming from a 16 year old from london but i cant ever get enough of the dead boys they are extreme punk at its best they kick lady gagas ass!

@zimsen123 the spaghetti incident was all about axl's megalomania. It's a good record, but it sucks because they couldn't write together anymore. It's okay to like but it isn't for the purist gnr fan.

This song, believe it or not, is a cover. Rocket From The Tombs (Cleveland, OH band) did this song originally. Cheetah Chrome was in RFTT before starting Dead Boys with Stiv. RFTT would play this song at local shows, but Stiv made the song a hit. Why? Because he pretty much lived the lyrics, much more so that Peter Laughner (singer/songwriter for RFTT). Side note... Dead Boys original band name was Frankenstein. They changed the name 2 weeks after opening up for Ramones at Kent State.
Peter Laughner died from acute pancreatitis, a condition associated with over imbibing in speed and alcohol, at age 24. He, unfortunately, embodied the very notion of the song.
Stiv Bator was hit and killed by a taxi at age 40.
@misfitsphreek I wouldn't really call it a cover. Cheetah wrote it and took it with him. I've done that with quite a few songs from my first band. Rocket from the Tombs were strictly a live band and never released an album til years after the Dead Boys broke up, so only Cleavland locals had ever heard the RTFT play it until 2002 when The Day the Earth Met RFTT came out.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@robin195959 What are you talking about? If I write a song, it's my song. I don't care who knows if I ever played it with a band that never recorded it.
@rjfait who cares about you and your band!!! RFTT did it first peter laughner wrote it with cheetah so this IS a cover even if RFTT only played in their bedroom.
If you can't see the influence Cheetah Chrome (and Stiv) had in Gun's n Roses, you're just merely a "listener" don't have a fuckin' clue.+ Next clue - Johnny Thunders
I cannot think of a sadder sounding guitar....the song is a sad one and the guitar work Cheetah Chrome does conveys the agony of self destruction. I wish there was a better copy of this performance

@splab123 i dont know thats going a bit far i mean the dead boys didnt influence the band as a whole all that much but i know the gnr version is only a cover but i do think it is a much more refined version
Funny to know, that Joey ramone how helpt dead boys to make a record, its whas joey how came up whit that stiv should sing in a band, on their first album stiv wonted joey to prouduce the album but it diden't happend.
plus Rotten got hes look from mr Richard Hell and not stiv bators.
well aint it fun when you get so high well that you just cant come, that lyric describes me very very well, aint it fun when you know taht you gonna die young..
Every wersion of this song is amazing. I don't really know what is in this song that make me very fucking excited, haah ;D Intro was made by God. Thank you God.
roll it back. Stiv. Don't be a muppet and talk about GnR, although plaudits for covering. this disjoint of audio and visual is perfect. I remember these days. It was part brilliance, part bravado and part stupdity. It was a joke. It was genius. It was fake and so very real. Nothing like today.
Chewing gum while singing. Classic, Stiv. Rotten didn't do as well.
Refined music,,,, no thanks. I want to feel a bands pain and turmoil that transcends in its rough sound. GNR are pretty plastic but hey to each his own. I prefer the Stiv Bators, GG Allins, Darby Crashes over the Axle Roses any day.
@Flakatak76 haha cmon stiv is so much closer to axl than to gg allin. All the cool ones like stiv, thunders, ramone, monroe, or iggy, loved gnr back in the day. Yeah they played their instruments "cleaner", but that raw feeling and the honesty that makes a band great was there in every word and note. If you don't see that at least in that Live like a suicide demo, or the first album then you don't know much about that transcendental pain you're talking about.
@crlumberjack Saw them open for Metalica, *yawn* "stiv, thunders, ramone, monroe, or iggy, loved gnr back in the day. " were do you get these facts? Sorry in my opinion Axle was all show.
@Flakatak76 just look it up he wasn't all show the guy really had it tough and had real reasons to right the lyrics he wrote. Stiv was Michael Monre's best friend, michael suggested the ain't it fun cover to axl, and sung in it, its on the album's booklet. Joey and Iggy have said in many interviews how much they like gnr, 'cause they were great band they were what they played. I personally prefer the Dead Boys and even more Lords of the New Church, but I can't say gnr weren't a great band .
@8Eriquo8 False! Rocket from the Tombs wrote the song in the early 70's. Then they broke up and some former "Rocket from the Tombs" - Members founded/joined "Dead Boys"
@thestrangesound lets stop the damn fighting between these two great bands. instead form together to get this kinda music back on top. Hate on todays shit like kanye west, lady gaga, and all the other corporate mumbo jumbo. Atleast the deadboys and guns used real instruments and were passionate about there music and showed it in their songs
lets stop the damn fighting between these two great bands. instead form together to get this kinda music back on top. Hate on todays shit like kanye west, lady gaga, and all the other corporate mumbo jumbo. Atleast the deadboys and guns used real instruments and were passionate about there music and showed it in their songs
...and if you think slash just got into music for the money then you sir are mistaken. Read his book and get some facts before you talk about him. He was all about the music.
@thestrangesound Guns n Roses was just a better band in every way and you know somewhat of what your talking about about gnr and their early days but you make it sound like a bad thing being that its coming from a point of view of someone who doesn't like gnr. Gnr did not live an exactly "happy life" as you put it. They were livin on the streets as well and did what ever they could to play the music they loved. They went from nothing to being the biggest band in the world.

@splab123 i dont know thats going a bit far i mean the dead boys didnt influence the band as a whole all that much but i know the gnr version is only a cover but i do think it is a much more refined version

Funny to know, that Joey ramone how helpt dead boys to make a record, its whas joey how came up whit that stiv should sing in a band, on their first album stiv wonted joey to prouduce the album but it diden't happend.
plus Rotten got hes look from mr Richard Hell and not stiv bators.

roll it back.

Peter Laughner wrote this song in 30 seconds at a Rocket from the Tombs rehersal - cool huh?

Refined music,,,, no thanks. I want to feel a bands pain and turmoil that transcends in its rough sound. GNR are pretty plastic but hey to each his own. I prefer the Stiv Bators, GG Allins, Darby Crashes over the Axle Roses any day.
Flakatak76 1 year ago
@Flakatak76 haha cmon stiv is so much closer to axl than to gg allin. All the cool ones like stiv, thunders, ramone, monroe, or iggy, loved gnr back in the day. Yeah they played their instruments "cleaner", but that raw feeling and the honesty that makes a band great was there in every word and note. If you don't see that at least in that Live like a suicide demo, or the first album then you don't know much about that transcendental pain you're talking about.
crlumberjack 1 year ago
@crlumberjack Saw them open for Metalica, *yawn* "stiv, thunders, ramone, monroe, or iggy, loved gnr back in the day. " were do you get these facts? Sorry in my opinion Axle was all show.
Flakatak76 1 year ago
@Flakatak76 just look it up he wasn't all show the guy really had it tough and had real reasons to right the lyrics he wrote. Stiv was Michael Monre's best friend, michael suggested the ain't it fun cover to axl, and sung in it, its on the album's booklet. Joey and Iggy have said in many interviews how much they like gnr, 'cause they were great band they were what they played. I personally prefer the Dead Boys and even more Lords of the New Church, but I can't say gnr weren't a great band .

Dead boys wrote the song and gnr made it sound decent. /argument

Atleast the deadboys and guns used real instruments and were passionate about there music and showed it in their songs

...and if you think slash just got into music for the money then you sir are mistaken. Read his book and get some facts before you talk about him. He was all about the music.
gnr87x 1 year ago
@thestrangesound Guns n Roses was just a better band in every way and you know somewhat of what your talking about about gnr and their early days but you make it sound like a bad thing being that its coming from a point of view of someone who doesn't like gnr. Gnr did not live an exactly "happy life" as you put it. They were livin on the streets as well and did what ever they could to play the music they loved. They went from nothing to being the biggest band in the world.

@Explosivecork Dead Boys. From the album "We Have Come For Your Children" in 1978. Their debut "Young Loud & Snotty" in '77 is a punk classic.

good songs, both this and gnr's cover. stiv bators teached for example Michael Monroe (Hanoi Rocks) to hang himself with a mic and many other tricks.
