Tony Visconti is on record as saying the reverse tape section was added as it was one of the few recordings where the melody almost sounded identical when played backwards. However, with the words obviously garbled, it sounded like a new set of lyrics. In any case it's a classic. Thanks for posting. I'm off to play the album now.

Classic album!i heard they recorded it backwards because the song wasnt long enough for a single!Though it IS on a single!
