I quit drugs a while back and for a while I was in fear of losing my "edge". My fears proved to be unfounded. I am as edgy as ever. I can't condone or condemn drug use. It's your body, your choice... the consequences, course are an individual choice as well. Amen Wayne!
Wayne doesn't take any drugs, but when he preforms in Oklahoma City every New Years, he pays the city to legalize marijuana on that block for the night.
I've heard Win Butler was kinda a dick before. Doesn't really matter, Thom Yorkes supposedly like that sometimes too. You can just get pissy, doesn't affect the music. I was shocked though.
Beck I have trouble seeing that s but he could probably be snobby cause of his family's art background, even though he seems super chill.
Wayne wouldn't purposefully steer us wrong, he might just find it strange that anyone be mean at all when he's so ridiculously nice.
@mrfudgeyhead Win butler and Thome Yorke are talent less bums! those guys are what's wrong with music, no balls! a bunch of pussies from private schools. The working class is gonna takeover! I can feel it. Beck is cool though, he's down.
I like how Wayne doesn't say "hey man, take some acid cuz it'll make our show all the better!!" No, he leaves it up to you the fan to decide what to do. Frankly I think their show would be great on a little acid!
My cousin and I met Wayne about a year ago and he is the nicest person I've ever talked to. He talked to us for like 15 minutes and he was talking non-stop
@ledzep91595 he did that with us too! he really is the nicest guy. i asked if he would play watching the planets and he actually played some of it acoustically after yoshimi. i nearly died.
@rcvideoshooter Sure, Wayne's voice isn't compatible with pop music, but it sure as heck is with the stuff they write. I couldn't even think about anyone else singing the Lips and brining out the same great meanings.

Are you guys kidding me? I mean, if there were an award for "Worst, Weakest Male Vocalist" out there this guy would win hands down every year. Even Billy Corgan sounds great compared to this guy. The "weak, artsy style" would be like Chris Martin or something...this guy is a JOKE. You could literally take any loser out of the local bar Karaoke contest and they would SMOKE this guy. Do you guys not see this??? Wow!!
@rcvideoshooter Hey, you suck bro. Clearly you know nothing about music, and have a baised, generic, and unappreciative opinion of anything that's not normal.
im sorry my comment took up 4 comment windows... but all in all to see the flaming lips live is an experience you will never forget... i honestly feel like i have seen the best concert i will ever see.
"you are so cool wayne" lol there is a truth in this i found when i saw them live.
when wayne was talking on stage i heard this old womans voice behind me say "he's so wonderful!" i turned around and looked and it was a woman who looked atleast 50 behind me just smiling at the stage lol.... i thought she either just stayed to see this band live or (i don't mean to be age prejudice) but this 50 year old lady listens to the flaming lips! which i was honestly kind of suprised by that idea
i dunno i was guessing he is late 30's early 40's. im not saying their music is made for a certain generation. ive just never met anyone much older than me who listens to the flaming lips. (im 23).
Well seeing as the flaming lips have been around since '83, making the band ..28 years old? I'd say there is a fair chance they may have some listeners older than 23 years of age :)
we just ended up in my friends room with the lights low listening to really spacey music and hoping to get through the nightmare before the lips came on. well a half hour before the lips we decided to smoke a bowl.... that bowl was probably one of the greatest decisions of my life, we both felt like we understood reality again. and went to the concert. the walk to the concert felt like it was straight out of "taking woodstock" then we got to them form the 2nd song onwards... best concert ever!
... well in my book atleast. which i take full responcibility for taking too much of it but i almost didn't get to see the flaming lips because i took too much. we had like 3 hours before the flaming lips went on and a friend and i sniffed two tenths of molly. two minutes after i sniffed it i knew i had made a mistake. shadows started flashing in rainbow light form, my body felt like jello, started getting heat flashes and my pupils would start dancing every minute
People, even drug users, tend to attribute WAY too much of what is "weird" to drugs. I was a freak LONG before i ever smoked a joint, and I'm sure Wayne was too. A lot of the trippiest musicians and artists DON'T do drugs, or not often. Drugs can open your mind to new possibilities, but they can hinder as much as help. True genius, even the weird kind, comes naturally. As Salvador Dali put it: "I don't DO drugs. I AM drugs."
I was stoned last summer and I was in the Marquee where the Flaming Lips were going to start without me knowing, it was amazing and probably'll be the best experience for my entire life <3
so i got to talk to wayne coyne last week cause of a lucky kind of "right place, right time" kind of thing. He is a really interesting guy, every time i hear him talk i come to like him more and more.
@tanner0714 i would do anything to meet Wayne Coyne, i was front row at a Lips show a few months ago and got to touch him as he kind of stuck his hands out into the crowd, and that is one of the greatest moments of my life, i cant imagine how incredible meeting and talking to him would be
I love how you ended this interview and it made me smile. What else can be said? I've been in front of him and his energy and it's just impossible to say much else other than you are so cool and thanks for existing! Great interview :)
