This video brings tears to my eyes because it makes me so proud to be black. It is a shame that so many Boricuas who see this refuse to identify with their African ancestors who brought this art form and others like it.
@smithphoenix1 Actually, many boricuas DO identify with our west african genes... and our arawak genes... and our north/east african genes... and our european genes. There is a reason why so many cultural things survived on our island to this day. We take pride in our multi-cultural roots; it is what is taught to us from childhood. I doubt you have met that many Boricuas who turn around and say: "I saw that Bomba video on YT... and I don't like it."... o.O We love it all. =)

This is the only thing you are right about I apologize to anyone by saying fake Puerto Rican there is no such thing. No Puerto Rican is more Puerto Rican than the next. I am not trying seperate my people unlike Fmarco27. Besides this shit everything I said I ride for. CF
Many of these Africans were brought to the coastal areas of PR. Initially they were sought after as cheap labor to replace the Tainos at the gold mines. After the gold was exhausted the industry switched to sugar and later on coffee. The sugar cane industry didnt pop off liked the Spaniards expected so slavery wasnt needed as much as Cuba. Slaves were able to buy their freedom cheeply hence a big free black population.
You real silly I could tell. I'm not a violent person but I have beaten the shit out of couple dudes for many reasons. History has not been one but what ever. If thats what it takes to enlighten some one so be it. Im far from light 220 5'9 all muscle nigga 50 in da clip every day. Actually you could see me on myspace look for verbaldarwinism or Constant Flow. CF
Now there were 31 different tribes brought to this island and according to what century or time and what politics was going on in Africa you can determine what kind of West African or Central African tribes were brought to the island. For example in early stages of slavery alot of the Africans taken to PR were from the Mandinga. The recent arrivals probably mid 1800s were from the Yoruba and Congo.
After the Europeans ravaged the Island, almost exterminated its native population and exhausted all of the gold they left to conquer or explore other areas in hope of more riches. From that point PR became a mere military post with small a number of European colonist, decent number of mestizos (Taino and white) and large black slave population. Of course interbreeding was happening due to alot of rape exploitation but I'm sure there was some love to between these groups.
Now to the African element. Ever since the beginning of the colonial period in PR there was an West African presence with a conquistador named Juan Garrido. He was a mulatto slave from Seville Spain. Actually the mid 1500s African slaves constituted the majority of Puerto Rico population.
Even the word Jibaro is an Amerindian word like Guajiro which also a word by used Cubans to identify some one of a rural background. I guess the natives did the samething in Cuba like they did in PR.
The word Guajiro is not Amerindian. It is a remnant of the Spanish-American War in which US soldiers called their Cuban counterparts, "War Heroes." Over time, this became known as Guajiro, what we called our campesinos...
Thats not true, Guajiro is an Amerindian word, when you see the relatives of the Arawaks and Caribs (Tainos and Caribes) in Venezuela, there are ethnic groups that still go by the name Guajira and Guajiro.
After the arrival of the Europeans many of the indiginous particurly the males were wiped out by diseases and war brought upon by the Spaniards. The Europeans breeded with the females and some pure Tainos or Amerindians migrated to the mountainous region of Borinquen. That is why today there is traces of strong DNA amongst many of the Jibaros or people that live in the interior of Puerto Rico.
These indians or Amerindians originally came from Venezuela than populated the lesser and greater Antilles breaking up into various groups: Taino, Carib and in Cuba the Ciboney and others.
Now lets do the Native American or Amerindian element of Puerto Rican culture the Taino. As you probably already the Taino was the original inhabitants of the Borinquen. On the eastern end of the island there is archeological evidence that many of the Taino carried Carib DNA also so there was intermingling between natives as well.
There decendants who are located every where but you can find specific influence in certain towns. For example, Corsicans in Yauco. Corsicans were well known in PR for the cultivation of Coffee crops. Another example the French influence of Mayaguez alot of French migrated to the western part of PR after the Hatian slave revolt.
wow are you serious b for real? Read any book on the history of PR and you will see. Aight lets break it down European: The majority of our European ancestry come from Southern Spain, Majorca, Canary Islands and Corsica. To a lesser degree French, German and Dutch. From the Middle East we have some Lebanese people that migrated to the island.
And this has nothing to do with Africa this has to do with Puerto Rican culture which consist of three elements Taino, Spaniard and West African. Who gives a shit if Africans sold their captives to the Spaniards back than. We are talking about the now. The majority of Puerto Ricans profess up and down they are from Spain but the truth is there are strong Taino and African roots in our cultural identity and gene pool. Real Puerto Rocks need to wake up!!!
Who's on Africas dick nukka I rep my culture black, indian and white allday now get off my dick. And I rep Jersey City NEXT TO the NEW HOUSE PROJECTS THE BLUE DOORS BY BULLET TOWN BOOKER T AND GUNSHOT TOWERS WHAT.
Yo get off Spain's dick. Those Spaniards do not give a shit about the average Boricua. Even the sound of the name Boricua would make the average white Spaniard cringe. Go back to Castille and leave Borinquen to the real Puerto Ricans (mixed with Taino Indian, West African and European.
uh, this was more than 50 years back, more like 600 years when the Spanish brought African slaves to Mexico. Some historians say that Africans have been in Mexico way before the Spanish (but not the Aztecs and Mayans). They say the Olmec people are a mix of Mande (Sierra Leonan) and Aztec.
Correction to that. Do to the natives of the island unable to survive european deseases in less than 50 years they were all but wiped out.
Africans were brought to work on the coastal regions, and gold mines for the spaniards, and that's the reason why most population of african descendants are located in the coastal region where sugar cane was mostly grown.
let's get things straight. Bomba is straight up Puerto Rican and no is trying to be Dominican. We (los africanos) are trying to perserve what we have left of our traditions.
Bomba is 100% Puerto Rican because it was created and developed on the island. HOWEVER, alot of Bomba rhythms, and lyrics to the songs were INFLUENCED by Dominicans AND RUNAWAY HAITIAN SLAVES after the haitian rebellion. "Misirere Congo Misie", perfect example. It's a Cüembe from the north. Look it up...
You definately right but Bomba specifically from Mayaguez is more influenced by Haiti than any other region where Bomba was and is played frequently on the island. Mayaguez has a great deal of French and Dominican influence in its history. Perfect example Ramon Bentances' father was Dominican and he was educated in France and was mixed with African heritage.

CF201 4 years ago
After the Europeans ravaged the Island, almost exterminated its native population and exhausted all of the gold they left to conquer or explore other areas in hope of more riches. From that point PR became a mere military post with small a number of European colonist, decent number of mestizos (Taino and white) and large black slave population. Of course interbreeding was happening due to alot of rape exploitation but I'm sure there was some love to between these groups.
CF201 4 years ago
Now to the African element. Ever since the beginning of the colonial period in PR there was an West African presence with a conquistador named Juan Garrido. He was a mulatto slave from Seville Spain. Actually the mid 1500s African slaves constituted the majority of Puerto Rico population.

Even the word Jibaro is an Amerindian word like Guajiro which also a word by used Cubans to identify some one of a rural background. I guess the natives did the samething in Cuba like they did in PR.
CF201 4 years ago
The word Guajiro is not Amerindian. It is a remnant of the Spanish-American War in which US soldiers called their Cuban counterparts, "War Heroes." Over time, this became known as Guajiro, what we called our campesinos...
mgarcia2020 3 years ago
Thats not true, Guajiro is an Amerindian word, when you see the relatives of the Arawaks and Caribs (Tainos and Caribes) in Venezuela, there are ethnic groups that still go by the name Guajira and Guajiro.
SuperConejo 3 years ago
After the arrival of the Europeans many of the indiginous particurly the males were wiped out by diseases and war brought upon by the Spaniards. The Europeans breeded with the females and some pure Tainos or Amerindians migrated to the mountainous region of Borinquen. That is why today there is traces of strong DNA amongst many of the Jibaros or people that live in the interior of Puerto Rico.
CF201 4 years ago
These indians or Amerindians originally came from Venezuela than populated the lesser and greater Antilles breaking up into various groups: Taino, Carib and in Cuba the Ciboney and others.
CF201 4 years ago
Now lets do the Native American or Amerindian element of Puerto Rican culture the Taino. As you probably already the Taino was the original inhabitants of the Borinquen. On the eastern end of the island there is archeological evidence that many of the Taino carried Carib DNA also so there was intermingling between natives as well.
CF201 4 years ago
There decendants who are located every where but you can find specific influence in certain towns. For example, Corsicans in Yauco. Corsicans were well known in PR for the cultivation of Coffee crops. Another example the French influence of Mayaguez alot of French migrated to the western part of PR after the Hatian slave revolt.
CF201 4 years ago
wow are you serious b for real? Read any book on the history of PR and you will see. Aight lets break it down European: The majority of our European ancestry come from Southern Spain, Majorca, Canary Islands and Corsica. To a lesser degree French, German and Dutch. From the Middle East we have some Lebanese people that migrated to the island.
CF201 4 years ago
And this has nothing to do with Africa this has to do with Puerto Rican culture which consist of three elements Taino, Spaniard and West African. Who gives a shit if Africans sold their captives to the Spaniards back than. We are talking about the now. The majority of Puerto Ricans profess up and down they are from Spain but the truth is there are strong Taino and African roots in our cultural identity and gene pool. Real Puerto Rocks need to wake up!!!

CF201 4 years ago 2
uh, this was more than 50 years back, more like 600 years when the Spanish brought African slaves to Mexico. Some historians say that Africans have been in Mexico way before the Spanish (but not the Aztecs and Mayans). They say the Olmec people are a mix of Mande (Sierra Leonan) and Aztec.

Without the Africans coming to the islands (DR, PR, and Cuba) all would be just another Mexico. Full of Spanish and Native American blood.
unique5589 4 years ago
There's African descendence that live in Mexico. African slaves were brought to Veracruz, Oaxaca, and Costa Chica.
DETmostwanted 4 years ago
Correction to that. Do to the natives of the island unable to survive european deseases in less than 50 years they were all but wiped out.
Africans were brought to work on the coastal regions, and gold mines for the spaniards, and that's the reason why most population of african descendants are located in the coastal region where sugar cane was mostly grown.

Uh, what would be wrong with that anyway?

let's get things straight. Bomba is straight up Puerto Rican and no is trying to be Dominican. We (los africanos) are trying to perserve what we have left of our traditions.

Bomba is as puerto rican as pastelillos and acapurrias. Please, it is not dominican, it is 100% puerto rican.
depradine 4 years ago
Bomba is 100% Puerto Rican because it was created and developed on the island. HOWEVER, alot of Bomba rhythms, and lyrics to the songs were INFLUENCED by Dominicans AND RUNAWAY HAITIAN SLAVES after the haitian rebellion. "Misirere Congo Misie", perfect example. It's a Cüembe from the north. Look it up...
SexyMorenoPaTi 4 years ago
You definately right but Bomba specifically from Mayaguez is more influenced by Haiti than any other region where Bomba was and is played frequently on the island. Mayaguez has a great deal of French and Dominican influence in its history. Perfect example Ramon Bentances' father was Dominican and he was educated in France and was mixed with African heritage.

Thats not dominican!! wtf ffsssss!rolf!~ This is 100% from Puerto Rico.Note: Dominicans stop trying to be puerto ricans. im sick of this %%&**%^&
