The Nostalgia Critic actually found out what exactly these songs were meant to be. The songs for each of the four kids were homages to the past decades of music. Gloop was the 50's, Violet's was the 60's, Salt's was the 70's, and Mike's was the 80's.

Roald Dahl's big problem with the 70's movie is that he wanted Spike Milligan to play Willy Wonka

To be honest, much as I like Roald Dahl, growing up with him and still like much of his work, the chocolate factory aged pretty poorly for me.

It just comes over to much as a rant at things Dahl personally doesn't like. And whilst he delivers it with his usual charm, the whole Mike Teavea part always DID came over to me as 'Grr! Damn kids don't read (my) books anymore! Rah!'

I mean... sheesh.

I'd say Dahl's other works are better personally.
