Great expression, and impressive. I played sax from middle through high school. My daughter is now going into middle school, and has chosen the alto sax, and has been playing piano for a few years now. She might understand better than I currently can what you mean by "head" and accompanying chords. I'm hoping you might be willing to expand on what these are, and maybe give a popular tune to use as an example. A question I'd also like to ask is: how does one know what the cords are? Thanks!!
I personally played this song in jazzband.. The arrangment was a bit differant, and i wasn't aloud to add anything to the simple melody. I play 1st alto as a freshman(and even as an 8th grader in the highschool band) ... I'm not sure what to thing about the airy sound you produce, but overall it's good :)
that was amazing. i played this song 4/5 years ago. and i was too shy at the time to do all the improve. but i looooove what you've done with it. i've been playing alto for 11 years now(:
wow man that was really nice.. i like how you play that song and i love your vibrato. im a drumer and a percusionist snd im trying to learn how to play sax and i want to play the alto sax just the way you do it!!
I can't believe your tone! You are so into it. I'm 14 and I want to be a musician when I grow up :P hehe. Wow. you've just become one of my new inspirations thanks! :)
I like the style but i feel as if there is some tone quality missing out of your sound. It could be a combination of reed placement or even to hard of a reed for that mouth piece. Anyway I think there is to much of an "airy" sound but keep going at and improving. good job
Wow you sound awesome, My set up is the selmer C* and an Rovner Eddie Daniels Ligiture. Give it a shot if you want. But with that sound I wouldnt change a thing.
@altosaxplayer12 The "head" of the piece which is the main melody and the cords is what you have to know not memorize. The rest of the piece is all improvised (improv) on top of the same cords. Most songs you just know the head and the rest is just playing your heart out.
Improving is awesome. Some jazz greats like John Coltrane improvs for close to an hour sometimes during his concerts. It's what makes jazz music so great! It's about freedom to create and going anywhere you want to go.
@altosaxplayer12 I am currently in the 8th grade and have played alt sax for 2 1/2 years now, I can't even do this, but I have a private tutor and I am working on it. It takes time broski...
@CalifornianMusician It's a vandoren mouth piece v16 perhaps? I'd look into their hard rubber mouth pieces. They give you a rounder sound as opposed to the grittier metal mouthpiece sound. Every musician has his own preferences, I'd just suggest going out and trying out a few. Hope this helps and good luck on your high school jazz band.
Haha isn't an altissimo A a pain in the ass? It's just right at the doorstep of being in the altissimo register and it's hard to get out sometimes, plenty of variables. Vote up if you know what I'm sayin.
Wow! Damn I mean that just blew me away! That just made my night. Beautiful piece man I'll have to see what else you have, but you just got yourself a fan
@gregoryusa1 Thanks greg. I'm trying my best. Difficult when I'm running a business and working on photography/filmmaking career as well. Just picked up my sax for the first time in like half a year yesterday.
Awesome job man, keep up the good work, if i may suggest, broaden your vibrato a little more, its a little too choppy in my opinion for such a layed back piece! Jazz vibrato and classical vibrato are 2 different animals!
Beautiful! I love a good song that stirs the soul! This would be perfect to listen to on a warm summer night with a smoke and drink on the back porch. That would be relaxation at it's finest. :3 Keep up the great work!

@p1000SWR It's too good of a take to throw away, that said, you're right, he should have been tuned from the get go. But besides the odd time, you can't really hear it too bad, and his ideas still shine through
I like how you play. I just think you sound a bit "airy" when you do some of the vibrados. Oh and watch the tuning on them high notes. Im not trying to put you down, its just constractive critisism.
Wow, so smooth. The shaking your head back and forth thing really improves the music. This just makes me want to pull out a bottle of California Shiraz, light some candles and pour oil all over my body.
@eatingperson Hahaha, in my head, I was like 'California Shiraz...keepin it classy, nice.....candles....I'm feeling it!' Then my train of thought is broken as I burst out laughing with that oil bit! haha...please tell me people mistake u for tila tequila, not richard simmons...cos some shiraz...wait, what am I saying...some fine South African Sauvignon Blanc always good well with some Tequila....:P
ever considered doing more a stop recording cadenza (not sure what the real name is) and then start recording and cadenza off the last chord for ending. I bet you could do that with band in a box if your school or you or someone you know has it
very good man. im not that great at mine. i dont even know what type of mouthpiece mine is. i need to ask my teacher what i shoul switch to later. im sticking with mine for now, just cuz im used to it. i have been told that any instrument can play well, but its the player that matters.
yes your last statement is correct, but mouthpiece can make a large difference especially if your just using a bad one that came with your sax. My suggestions are for concert band a selmer Cstar and for jazz a E. rousseau 4R. You should see what your teacher thinks and go find some really good players at your local shop, also I wouldn't but a super nice 100-200 dollar mouthpiece until you have a decent tone and such so that you will find the right one for you.
haha hey man, you dont suck! if this guy cant respect music, then hes not a musician. youve got some serious breath man, i really dig it! keep it up man you and that sax are best friends.
Damn. I just found my alto under a bunch of stuff in another room! I haven't played in 6 years almost. I played so many scales in high school, I can't forget 2 of them. But, if we had a contest, you'd blow me out of the water. I'd have to call in an arty strike in your position to win! Fine job to the "untuned" ear. Sounded great. Didn't know an alto could play like that. Well, mine anyways. Well played :)

This is fantastic well done .Could you have alisten to my sax and without laughing give me some advice please i am 48 and playing for about 2 yrs ish just type in romeo011 thank you Tom.
Man, I'm a junior university saxophone player and I've always wanted to play like this. I've never really had the subtone thing down though and the improv isn't so great for me. I have the same mouthpiece setup as you, and I'm playing on a cannonball big bell stone raven. Haha, this sounds amazing.
Yes the Yas-62 is a solid horn in all aspects. You're not going to sound like Cannonball, but then again you're also not spending $5000+ on a horn =).
thx :) yea, i dont want to spend that much on a sax now beacuse im only like lvl 3 player. many say the yas 62 is a good horn. how could i miss eraseing the "is" in my quote lol "is does it" :S

Le,
That is just too much man.
I heard stories about you but they didn't do you justice.
Maybe you can play the theme to the next film, once the current one is finished.
Good stuff man!

Man, I'm a junior university saxophone player and I've always wanted to play like this. I've never really had the subtone thing down though and the improv isn't so great for me. I have the same mouthpiece setup as you, and I'm playing on a cannonball big bell stone raven. Haha, this sounds amazing.

very awesome dude, ur sound is perfect. The bit of raspiness, the occasional vibrato in all the right places, and the dynamics are perfect

i like your sound :) im thinking of buying a yas 62. is does it have good intonation?
jonasgroneng 2 years ago
Yes the Yas-62 is a solid horn in all aspects. You're not going to sound like Cannonball, but then again you're also not spending $5000+ on a horn =).

thx :) yea, i dont want to spend that much on a sax now beacuse im only like lvl 3 player. many say the yas 62 is a good horn. how could i miss eraseing the "is" in my quote lol "is does it" :S
