I played this game on PS3, I'm very disappointed at this as the game is very difficult when you play by yourself plus you can't upgrade your gear while any given time & can only do so when you go to those points where you open the book to do so. There is no tutorial on how to do things in the game & getting to places is very hard when you're on your own.
Symphony of the Night on PSP is still much better than this. Its not worth even spending my money on this
This game is addicting as all hell, its not just for hardcore fans. If you ever liked any castlevania game at all, get it.As far as this review goes, IGN wouldnt know a good game if it sat on their face and farted.
What they should have done is change the multiplayer layout of the maps to where it forces people to help each other to even get to the boss. Only problem with that is noobs, although there is a mic compatablitiy function so players can talk. If you have friends that have it, buy it. If you dont have friends that have it,outcast them, buy it and make new ones :P
Let me just say this about harmony of despair. If you could level up i would never play another game again. So yes its worth the $14.99 price tag (for U.S. players) Not only that, it has loads of downloadable content such as new characters and even new chapters. The only bad thing i can think of that i dont like is the fact that when you start and go online people just go right to the boss and beat it for you. Some people might like that, i however do not.
it's definitely worth its price of admission. don't go at it alone, you'll get really confused. get a few more of your castlevania buddies and go at it together. you'll enjoy and appreciate its complexities, its beauty, and its charisma.
PSN version is much more worth it. Supports local multiplayer, and has more content right off the bat. Includes two more characters, Julius Belmont, and Yoko Belnades. It also includes the 7th level, which was originally DLC. If you have people you can play this with, and/or love Castlevania, go for it. Mastering the levels is fun. I was skeptical at first, but give it time and you will love it. The game is deep...just try to fighter Brauner or Dracula on Hard...it's not so easy.
Ever since playing dawn of sorrow and portrait of eying for the ds, I was hooked. Buying this game tomorrow. If you want to play a little with me, my psn is Aadrianseth
I absolutely loved Aria of Sorrow on GBA, but Harmony of Despair was just a disappointment... it felt so short lived with only 6 stages, I felt like I got ripped off. I can't believe Konami pulled a Capcom, later releasing a bunch of DLC which could have just been included in the game since its so short lived...
look , Konami is famous of making a player so *frustrating* or that's what u call, Nemesis is more frustrating (MSX) , Gradius ,Salamander , Zone of the Enders , alert status in Metal Gear Solid and go on with the Nintindo games , so ........WE GOT USED TO THAT !!
My friend wants me and another friend to get this. We used to played B:Ops Nazi Zombies as our 'game' together. -.- Yeah.. I'm gonna stick with Zombies, boys... Sorry.
*cough* all about that info you can find in when you pick a character, Y/triangle. And there is XP system for Shanoa/Yoko/whip users. Your argument is invalid!
i've had this game for months and as of late no one has even been on... I am really starting to miss the days when it first came out when i could play with random people and friends
if this is confusing i don't want to know what you think of dark souls and if your playing multi-player why not just ask the people your playing with. I was thinking of buying this but without local co-op i guess its only if i can get a friend to buy it.
LOL IGN and their face value reviews. Any real fan of Castlevania would get hooked to this. The multiplayer isnt insane, but as an RPG? Looting, collecting, the challenge of building up your stats without an actual EXP system, and fighting steroid injected counterparts of classic bosses? Deep as hell.
Also, its kinda beyond me who would try and jump on this as their first Castlevania game. This is definitely intended for fans...people who recognize at least 1/2 of the characters.
Just tried the trial for my PS3, I can't see a thing when the screen is zoomed all out.. I'm doubting whether or not I wish to spend my money on this game.
@0Freguenedy0 So, you'd rather play a Castlevania on your DS by yourself, which probably costed about $30, than a Castlevania crossover made so that you can play with your friends *Implying you have them* on your PS3 or XBox 360 for $15?... Sounds good to me.
@0Freguenedy0 So you'd rather pirate a game, therefore not paying the producers of the game, and not buy any of their current products, and thus, not helping them produce even more games? That's even better.
@Link4Dinner I'd rather play a CV game solo tbh. CV has always been about the immersion and single player experience for me. Even though I think this could be a could side strategy to keep the 2dvanias alive while providing multiplayer ability I'd much rather play a traditional CV and cap myself at the hardest level. I do like the idea that Konami is keep the 2d element alive, the solo 2d will probably drift to the 3ds.
Lol reading a manual is not the most effective way on learning how to play a game? Do these pompous assholes remember things like Atari and Nintendo. There was no one in my living room telling me how not to get owned in titles like Shadowgate or even Mario. I hate to sound but it needs to be said: Fucking kids don't know shit.
@Draeka He explains why it doesn't work in this game because it doesn't really explain everything, a good nintendo game, would have had a manual that would explain everything, or better yet be simple enough that one wouldn't be needed.
Lol love the way fan boys compare everything. There the same shit, most games run off a users connection. Why do you thing they went to dedicated servers on gow3. Let's end this once and for all if you love multiplayer get a xbox 360. If your like me and can't stand multiplayer and just play for enjoyment get a ps3. @aprilgold That is were the ps3 excels? You have that wrong i have both 360 and ps3. The ps3 is just a lag fuck. Paying for the online helps keep out people who can not pay for decent connection which you can get for $60.
@leaderliter Thats such a bullshit theory please stuff it back in your ass where it came from. Anyone with a laggy connection that has the $60 to pay for XBL if they want can pay for it wtf...
@Devilbat74 I said $60 can buy you decent connection. My friend that has only ps3 and LOVES ps3 admits it has 20x the lag of a 360 (online wise). When I played mw2 on my 360 it kicked bad hosts with in 10 seconds, ps3 keeps horrible host for a full game. I'm sorry you are a ps3 fan boy that cant accept the thought of 360 being better in some ways each have their pros and cons. Tbh idk which system i have in the end they are both good.
@leaderliter How does 'your friend" know ps3 has 20X the lag when it's not even on ps3 yet. It doesn't come out til this tuesday.Quit spreading stupid rumors.
@rabidninja1 he was talking about ps3 in general and i have to say i have both consoles and i agree that the online is laggier on the ps3 but weather that is me or not i dont know but i do prefer xbox over ps3
@croten12 I prefer PS3 for the simple fact that online play is free- you don't need to buy a PSN subscription. I *personally* have had no PS3 lag problems, but I don't have experience with the 360 to compare.
@valmontdracul I have to agree with you on this. I happen to use both, but am weening away from the 360 and contemplating going Silver (free), which is basically nothing.
I have no lag problems on either console (I played XBL for over 5 years), but that can be attributed to the fact that I forwarded my ports for 360 and set DMZ for my PS3. Also, I should add that my 360 is hard-wired into the network, and am running wi-fi with the PS3 and still experience zero lag. A+ to Sony for that one...
and again this so called "review" is a joke! the guy who's talking makes the game sound bad.. all those bad things he's naming?? i just don't understand!!
this game really is awesome! and you do get stronger as you play! the teamwork is awesome! and it doesnt bore at all!! and NO this game is not only for castlevania hc gamers! even people who don't know castlevania can enjoy this game! normal mode is do-able while hard mode is very tough (if not multi playered, try it alone)
@JBOTTSIOWA that depends mate!! the time you get is way to much!!
even a noob can easily complete the chapters within the time limit..
i'd say they added the time to not let people in groups die too much and than re-enter the game again! cuzz when you've died you return as skeleton (and can be revived by a team player) but if the skeleton dies, you lose 3 minutes! so theres always plenty of time to stand still and do everything you want in the whole level and even take your time defeating a bos
"Fails to explain it's mechanics to the players." This game is made for the hardcore fanbase, the people that have played the games of each respectful character and kept their unique growth from their particular game.
"Just dropped into the action and left to fend for yourself."
That's how every other 2D castlevania has been
IGN, pull the stick out of your ass
C:HoD is a game for hardcore gamers and champions, learn the game, or play something with training wheels (CoD)
traslation: this game is hard, you cant just mash buttons and you have to LEARN what your doing. this game gets minus interwebz cuz its not call of duty.
seriously i couldnt stop laughing at this "review"
So they can detract from Castlevania's score for not being user friendly and single player friendly but if the same thing happens in Demon's Souls it's ignored? Made funnier because in Demon's Souls a simple mistake could ruin a playthrough(Dying too often, killing somebody, using a certain item, upgrading a weapon). They don't review games, they get payed by somebody to say if the game is good or not.
Hey anyone who likes this game/likes to play with people who have headsets add me @ demonic methodz i would like to actually play with people with mics :P
THE POWER OF RRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLIIIIIIIIIIIIGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNN!!!
Could someone PLEASE tell the Castlevania: Harmony of Despair Facebook Page (it has one) that it made many sales on the Xbox and maybe they could at least say that its going to be released and give a release date?
Also, the spriters for the game spend hours on making those large-as-fuck stages for the fans content, there will be more DLC, but give the spriters a fucking break already.
thats how all Castlevania games are and were, some of em the characters had hidden moves, that took you days to figure out how to do...and thats just a begining
Im starting to understand why IGN reviews are getting more dislikes than likes now, this guy cant review games simple. i just came from the video where he gave mafia 2 a 7.0 but he gave starcraft 9.0 when he had it on the lowest graphics setting. this dude is a douche.
It's been said, it's obvious, but it needs to be known to the unaware.
Viewers of IGN are the biggest hypocrites in existance
This is a guy who reviewed the game honestly and here come the fanboys rushing to the defense of their precious lifeline. Oh it's ok fanboys, I like the game too. I just know when to shut the fuck up. Even worse, people just mash their keyboard cause "OH LOOK, ANOTHER IGN REVIEW, MUST HATE". We're all born with ears, perhaps you could use them once in a while.
This is exactly why I don't ever bother reading/watching/listening to reviews. Lots of stupid complaints from a WRITER above all other things and not a gamer. Some of the complaints are downright fucking stupid. This is one of the top Live Arcade games, if not THE top Live arcade game. I, as well as MANY others have invested 40+ dollars in this game across all DLC, put hundreds of hours in across all characters and still play it. I'd give it a 9.0, an experimental game and its a big success.
this game is so fucking fun, the frustration is what makes the game fun,I don't want to have my hand held through out a game, apparently that is the standard for every good game.
@gato213456 demon souls is fo ryou then if you have the time and a ps3. theres a breif tutorial at eh beggining(ending in yoru death) and you are then sent out on your own. its a great game, and worth the price tag if you can find a cheaper copy.
I dont really think solo players were "Left out in the cold" For me any level from chapter 1-11 can be done Solo with pretty much any character. It just takes time and patience to learn a boss pattern. If you do not have that time then play Multiplayer or just dont play at all. This game is for the hardcore gamers that like classic games from the nes onwards. For me its one of the best games made hands down and I can spend days upon days without getting bored on it.
Ya know when he says that nothing is explained? Well I remember the 1st time I played SotN. Nothing was Explained! I enjoyed the crap outta that game. (still do!) Learning the secerts was the fun part about it.
How many think this is a 10 out of 10? So what multiplayer is amazing single player is good too. I mean really people now a days. This is a terrible reveiw.
Love how they kept some of the bosses from the earlier games like DoS & PoR, but I hope they added some new bosses in this game (haven't played the game yet since I don't have an Xbox 360).
I gotta admit w/ the reviewer or 1 part, I wish they added an experience system w/ lvl ups, but shouldn't ruin the game by any means without it.
Hmm... so the game is hard... I really didn't expect a CV to be hard after playing the NES and SNES ones...
i think this game looks amazing. so it has a learning cuve SO WHAT i love playing my old nes games because there fun. gamers shouldnt have there hands held so much by the developers, thats most of the fun of old school games. you find out new things every time you play! i remember the first time i found out on level 2 of double dragon you could kick when you jump, it was awesome! to be honest thats how i can play like i can now is i know how to learn from my old games
the reason why our generation is so weak is because kids have games like cod to play. games like Castlevania taught kids the futility of life. and how to handle frustration.
'hardcore castlevaina fans?" Bull freaking crap this was my first castlevania game and i freakin slapped my forehead wondering why i didnt buy others?
Ok this review isn't the greatest. I'm a die hard castlevania fan. I started my gaming life with the nes and a copy of castlevania 1 I got for my 6th birthday from a garage sale. I do have to agree with Dorkidori that modern day gamers complain way to much about stupid stuff. I did have some problems with this game and the timed system playing it alone however bringing all the characters together and making it a party game is awsome.
hold on, are u fucking kidding me? OF COURSE aspects of the game have been ripped from previous castlevania games. If you payed the hell attention, most of the bosses have too. Also, if you freakin pay more attention, main characters from the previous games have also been pulled from their games to be put into this game. SO have monsters and other things. This is a terrible review.
I've heard some IGN reviewers complaining about game difficulties.
I mean really? boss battle are too tough? wtf do these guys want? go play a sim game, so then you can't have any challenge because you're living ''someone'' else's life, bitch.
Guys, he IS saying some pretty obvious things, but you're forgetting that this is his JOB as a reviewer. He knows that some people are not fully aware of what Castlevania is. We were all new to it at one point. He is just being professional.
This is a awesome game

@leaderliter How does 'your friend" know ps3 has 20X the lag when it's not even on ps3 yet. It doesn't come out til this tuesday.Quit spreading stupid rumors.
rabidninja1 4 months ago
@rabidninja1 he was talking about ps3 in general and i have to say i have both consoles and i agree that the online is laggier on the ps3 but weather that is me or not i dont know but i do prefer xbox over ps3
croten12 4 months ago
@croten12 I prefer PS3 for the simple fact that online play is free- you don't need to buy a PSN subscription. I *personally* have had no PS3 lag problems, but I don't have experience with the 360 to compare.
valmontdracul 4 months ago 2
@valmontdracul I have to agree with you on this. I happen to use both, but am weening away from the 360 and contemplating going Silver (free), which is basically nothing.
I have no lag problems on either console (I played XBL for over 5 years), but that can be attributed to the fact that I forwarded my ports for 360 and set DMZ for my PS3. Also, I should add that my 360 is hard-wired into the network, and am running wi-fi with the PS3 and still experience zero lag. A+ to Sony for that one...

I would have bought this game if they added local multiplayer. Its absence is pretty bullshit and there's really no excuse for it.

@0TanookiSuit0 the PS3 port will have local multiplayer. maybe they will patch it in to the 360.

JBOTTSIOWA 7 months ago
and again this so called "review" is a joke! the guy who's talking makes the game sound bad.. all those bad things he's naming?? i just don't understand!!
this game really is awesome! and you do get stronger as you play! the teamwork is awesome! and it doesnt bore at all!! and NO this game is not only for castlevania hc gamers! even people who don't know castlevania can enjoy this game! normal mode is do-able while hard mode is very tough (if not multi playered, try it alone)
so it's great!!
strudelNL 7 months ago
I was totally gonna buy this UNTIL they said 'time limits" sorry I hate that shit, I still love Castlevania.
JBOTTSIOWA 7 months ago

That's how every other 2D castlevania has been

traslation: this game is hard, you cant just mash buttons and you have to LEARN what your doing. this game gets minus interwebz cuz its not call of duty.
seriously i couldnt stop laughing at this "review"
D3thcloth 8 months ago
So they can detract from Castlevania's score for not being user friendly and single player friendly but if the same thing happens in Demon's Souls it's ignored? Made funnier because in Demon's Souls a simple mistake could ruin a playthrough(Dying too often, killing somebody, using a certain item, upgrading a weapon). They don't review games, they get payed by somebody to say if the game is good or not.

I have a question to anyone who has a Facebook.

Flukyjoker 11 months ago
This is exactly why I don't ever bother reading/watching/listening to reviews. Lots of stupid complaints from a WRITER above all other things and not a gamer. Some of the complaints are downright fucking stupid. This is one of the top Live Arcade games, if not THE top Live arcade game. I, as well as MANY others have invested 40+ dollars in this game across all DLC, put hundreds of hours in across all characters and still play it. I'd give it a 9.0, an experimental game and its a big success.
Mythologick 11 months ago
this game is so fucking fun, the frustration is what makes the game fun,I don't want to have my hand held through out a game, apparently that is the standard for every good game.

@gato213456 demon souls is fo ryou then if you have the time and a ps3. theres a breif tutorial at eh beggining(ending in yoru death) and you are then sent out on your own. its a great game, and worth the price tag if you can find a cheaper copy.
robloxfan459 11 months ago
I dont really think solo players were "Left out in the cold" For me any level from chapter 1-11 can be done Solo with pretty much any character. It just takes time and patience to learn a boss pattern. If you do not have that time then play Multiplayer or just dont play at all. This game is for the hardcore gamers that like classic games from the nes onwards. For me its one of the best games made hands down and I can spend days upon days without getting bored on it.
DTShandy 11 months ago
Ya know when he says that nothing is explained? Well I remember the 1st time I played SotN. Nothing was Explained! I enjoyed the crap outta that game. (still do!) Learning the secerts was the fun part about it.

Crossing fingers for PS3 release.

i think this game looks amazing. so it has a learning cuve SO WHAT i love playing my old nes games because there fun. gamers shouldnt have there hands held so much by the developers, thats most of the fun of old school games. you find out new things every time you play! i remember the first time i found out on level 2 of double dragon you could kick when you jump, it was awesome! to be honest thats how i can play like i can now is i know how to learn from my old games

If they stay true with the storyline Simon shouldn't be in this game. He died in Simons quest from wounds while fighting Dracula.

hold on, are u fucking kidding me? OF COURSE aspects of the game have been ripped from previous castlevania games. If you payed the hell attention, most of the bosses have too. Also, if you freakin pay more attention, main characters from the previous games have also been pulled from their games to be put into this game. SO have monsters and other things. This is a terrible review.
