If you read "one train later" about Andy's experience with the police he tells the story about why he wore the sunglasses.also that book is amazing very funny, sad it grabs u I read it on a trip to Australia from NYC
It's forgotten now but at the time this was London street thug music. It was the theme music when you were fighting in an alley. The combination of punk and reggae by an unknown band calling themselves The Police all conjured up images of fighting, drug use, having fun with mates, freedom from parents and society obligations, etc. They added the international flair afterwards. They even had a unique business strategy. Every aspect about this band in the beginning was so fucking clever.
When you have to play the same songs over and over for a tour, the only way it remains interesting for both you and the fans is if you get creative. Hey, that's what music is about right?
Sting looks tired here, he was a very busy person then. I still wish he would sing it exactly the same as on the record. I don't know why he insists on changing it.
@satchvanjohnson41 he never sang it the same as on the record. I watched several live versions. He just decided to completely change the song on a whim, which I think is arrogant. This guy turned into a money-grubbing balladeer trying to get the next big-selling hit.
@Pumpkingilmour Wrong. It's attributed to both him being tired thus conserving his energy and just improvising. It's what good musicians do. Andy would always change up the guitar parts and Stewart, the drums. That's just their way of coping with the fact that they have to play these songs over and over and over. It also keeps the live experience more organic. If you've never played a live set repeatedly before, then you won't understand what I'm talking about but trust me, that is why.
To think that earlier in the same day, Sting was filmed in the movie Quadrophenia, took a plane to make it to this show, and a few minutes before going onstage he nearly blinded himself with hair spray (hence the big sunglasses)
this was the last great rock band in the tradition of the 60' and 70's - not their music style - but in terms of musician ship, talent and creativity and song writing
@panhead55 ...really? Not only do you post this shitty joke that has been posted so many times before, but you can't think of anything cleverer than '...is good'?
The DJ's on KSAN ere playing the new Police 45 that had just come out, they apparently didn't like the sentiment in "Next To You ", ripped the needle across the record then threw it across the room and said, " No one should ever feel that bad about breaking up with someone !! "
What's interesting is Sting liked punk but was more raggae and jazz. Andy is same but a little more edgy. They build the songs and the concepts, but what really punches you in the gut is Stewart. When Stewart gets fired up, especially as the song builds up it's force, what he adds is 'angst'. Punk, to me, is a bit of a misnomer word - I like angst. To me, Stewart makes the perfect punctuation to the whole concept when he turns the songs toward the "now I'm pissed" side..

May i point out to all the fans of the drummer on this video to watch the video of the Buddy Rich drum soloon the Jerry Lewis show and the video the late Joe Morelloe playing Castillion Drums , two of the greatist drum solos of all time
Stewart seriously has the most talent out of any live rock band before and now. His technique and energy are crazy compared to everyone else. Who else do you know who can play traditional and still get incredible sound?
I love the Police, outlandos Amore is a great simple rock album and this twin number performance was brilliant, so many bands on these pop music shows just do the same boring run through as they have on the album, when u have a live performance you want something fresh otherwise why bother seeing them live performing so its good to see them speed it up and twang it a bit, thanks for the upload cevarius

si, el bataco era una bestia para darle a los parches, pese a que sting era el compositor de casi todo el material y todo eso, el sonido de police no sería único sin la genialidad del batero
@tomsega Lol.... I cant help agreeing....sort of raw sound I guess.... but yes, in comparison with ealier stuff by Focus, Captain Beefheart etc does sound a bit rough...
@raelraven2 Sting has just as much right as they do even though he's not completely punk. The only reason he's wearing those glasses is because he burned his eyes with hairspray.
i was just a year and a few months old at this time. I really wish i was born earlier. The Police were such a great band (I later bought "synchronicity" in the late 80's)
Sting sprayed hair dye in his eye right before the performance. That's why he has the shades on. He's making face because the shades are too big. His hair is from his role in Quadrophenia.
I'm a lifelong Police fan and I think that they were the best band of our era! Period! Sting had the best songs and image. Stewart was the insanist on drums. Is that a word? And Andy! Andy was the perfect fit at guitar!! A genius! Tres genius's. The Police!!!!!
@wan8iv Those are Stewart's sunglasses. Sting wore them after he accidentally sprayed himself in the eyes with hairspray backstage before the taping. The sunglasses were too large for him, so they look ridiculous on him.
@TheModCon Actually, what he does is deceptively complex. He's pretty incredible. Personally, I'm not comparing him to anybody. I'm just saying he's one of the best.
@TheModCon I said "one of rocks best all time drummer." Sure there are better but Copeland played the drums, the drums didn't play for him- single bass drum peddle , no trickery...hard to find guys like him nowadays...
@erikinhawaii The only way I rationalize Copeland's playing is by simply telling myself that he can't be human; that's all I've been able to come up with. Some drumming you don't get to judge; it judges you, ya know? As if his unrivaled brilliance on the drums weren't enough, I've also heard that he's a stand-up guy-- regarding his overall attitude--both professionally and publicly.
@tripnixon I always found that snare head breaking to be CRAZY ironic. Stewart probably relies on his snare less than any other rock drummer in recent memory, since the rhythms he plays are so tom-heavy...so of course he breaks his snare right out of the chute at the HoF induction. Hilarious.
@TheDDG Hehehe - couldn't agree more! What I've learned, even from my own drumming experience, is that Stewart tightens his snare head so he gets that unique "pop" we are familiar with, yet he can still make it resonate like a proper snare (ergo, this song's back beat sound). I am self taught on the drums: right handed not by choice. I've tried SO hard to play the traditional way Stewart does, but I can't. I hold the stick sideways with my right. He is a true drumming icon like Moon, etc.
The story goes that Sting got nearly blinded by some chemical earlier that day, what or how I can't remember, but he wore those glasses to cover up his swollen eyes.
Next To You still sounds as fresh as it did way back in '78. Each time I put on Outlandos' A-side it blasts of with a never-heard-before energy that makes me want to jump all around my living room.
Can't Stand Losing You, on the other hand, opens up its B-side with that truly irresistible blend of punk and reggae that only The Police were capable of producing.
My dad let me listen to Outlandos in '84 first and I was immediately caught by its raw power and aggression.
Andy once said something like he thought of Sting first as his bass player..without Sting grinding out a solid bass over Stuart's drumming there's no way Andy could perform the magic that makes the Police sound come alive.
It was Stewart who said that and still thinks of him that way. Stewart founded The Police but it was Stings songs that made them a hit. And Stewart believes that too.
that's true about the shades (borrowing Copeland's pair after spraying hairspray in his eyes)...they were too big for his head, which is why he kept twitching his head--to keep them on!
I could ramble on about how much I wish I was back there or how much I love these guys, but really just wish I had a time machine to fuck off out of here & watch live :P
Sting was filming the film Quadrophenia earlier that day, he ran off the plane just in time for a few minutes of makeup before tv. He sprayed hairspray in his eyes and he ended up blistering his eyes. He borrowed Stewart Copleand's oversized sunglasses in order to hide his blistered red eyes, not to make a bad fashion statement. True story.
Indeed. Apparently, he had a hard time keeping the glasses on his face and kept jerking his head back and twitching. The next day, kids all over England were wearing over-sized glasses and twitching. Hey, I wanted to be Sting when I was a youngster too. He was so cool.
these guys were reallllly good.

@DanMcCaffrey Yes I've heard that too. I think it was some kind of spray to make blond hair look platinum.

Fantastic band.
