  • Why is D-Star brand-specific? Icom-only. That's my only real resistance to getting serious about it.

  • Try not to let simple things like courtesy beeps ruin your enjoyment of and appreciation for amateur radio.

  • Ugh, I hate "courtesy beeps", If it were Quindar tones, at least it would be tolerable.

  • That analog signal sounds like an old 78 record! :-)

Great video! I'm using an IC-92AD, and I think D-Sar is very cool! There is only one D-Star repeater in my area (no Gateway yet), but I think this is the coolest thing to come out of the21st Century!

  • Very unique video and it is awsome.

Someday I,ll get me one D-Star.

  • I just bought an ICOM IC-2820 and the digital board is on the way and should be here in a couple of days. I'm in Los Angeles and D-star is a big deal down here. I can't wait to get involved with this.

  • Any idea why their was only interferance when transmiting on d-star? Could it be more info is sent via the carrier?

  • No idea why, but it hasn't dampened the enthusiasm over D-Star.

  • Good demo of how d-star causes interferance on Video cameras! check the video when transmiting on anolouge then check when it goes over to d-star, or did the power output get knocked up by mistake??? we all know how anoying intermitant digital signals are. Anyway looks like a intersting development. 73's

  • Standing as close to the transmitter as I was, I would have been surprised by not seeing any effect to the video image. Thanks for your observation and comments.

D-Star has EXPLODED here in southern California since this video was made and there doesn't appear to be an end in sight.

  • I apologize for the redundant comments my PC went nuts

  • Assuming you're the person in the video,jojester...I was really impressed with the info. one more question it is said in the video that the d star can key up with any other d star by call sign only...Is this true with a d star keying up with a analog radio as well using only call sign or it maybe reserved for digital only. Thank you so much. I apologize again for the rookie comments. I'm a new curious HAM.

  • WOW!!! I'm a new ham who has no RIG. BOY oh BOY!My two choices for HT's are Kenwood TH F6 and Yaesu VX-7R. I was leaning toward the F6A for its 5W on all bands 2m/440/220. After hearing the quality on that D star I have some more thinking to do. Question: Can a person with a D star radio contact a person who does not a have a D star (example they may have the F6a) or can a person with a F6A contact a D star radio? Sorry for the rookie question...Im new to this, Thank you.

  • You should be able to, but you just won't be able to communicate in Digital Voice or Digital Data modes between the radios. The digital radios are capable of analog and digital.

  • @BigAlexB1Blues yes you can. d-star supports older networks as well point to point if thers no repeter, its just they have better data modes then older systems. even full web browsing on a dd repeater.

  • Very impressive.

  • Thank you for the positive feedback. I am glad you enjoyed it.

  • The audio quality was the first thing I noticed while on the road with a fellow HAM, not knowing that he had switched over to the D-star repeater and hearing that, for a little bit I remember thinking that there was something missing or the transmission sounded strange, then realizing that it was digital and was missing the background noise/hiss that you get on an analog transmission.

  • Demonstrating the audio difference between the analog repeater on the same mountain top and the -Star repeater was crucial. Craig, KM6AW, was approx 40 miles from the repeater site when the demonstration was made, so the average amateur could really get a feel for what D-Star can do for their effective communications.

  • Cool demonstration. I noticed the RF effect on the camera when the guy keyed up, hahaha..

  • I noticed the RF's effect as I was recording. Thanks for watching.

  • Mark,

Thanks for mentioning that ARN had presented this on their 11/16/07 broadcast. We were totally unaware of that and we are extremely pleased that the folks at ARN found these videos newsworthy.

    Glad you enjoyed them!
