@metaljo88 whoa. crawl back into your hole of hate and fear and let the rest of the world enjoy themselves. let me guess. you're poor, white, and pissed off
Anyone who knows an addict, or has seen someone who uses drugs heavily knows that although that movie may have been farfetched, he has been doing some serious drugs. He stutters in this whole interview, his lower jaw grinds, and you can tell his mind and his mouth aren't in sync. Guy's brain is fried.
what amazes me is that it amazed some people that thought this was great acting. it didn't take any talent to do what he did. i would guess most of you could don a beard and dark glasses and do just as well.
are all you people fucking serious!? its LETTERMANS talk show. he is joking when he says he's sueing. If you ran a huge talk show and someone came out and half assed their interview and dressed like a slob it would be considered a slap in the face like they dont care about your show. For you to say Letterman is a jerk now for taking stabs at Joaquin during this interview is ridiculous, and shows how little you understand the business. He could have sued him , and he jokingly brushed it off.
i've been watching the movie in bits and pieces, and u can tell it's all phony..i think joaquin and casey got together and smoked, and that's where they got this stupid idea..ha......must b nice to be able to do projects at a whim.....
honestly either way he still kinda made himself look like a douche even if it was real or fake he didnt know at the time and he still acted like a douche...him being a douche still aired on T.V. if it was in the movie or not lol
Are u dumb? How did letterman act like a douche? Hes a fucking talk show host who is famous for his witty humor and somewhat controversial style of interview. For someone to go on ANY interview dressed like Joaquin in rough shape and barely answering a question is a slap in the face in that business. Its a comedy show, have you ever heard his monologue or any other for that matter? Youre a complete moron and clearly you dont understand tv. he woulda got bashed on any show,
Bullshit! Like Roger Ebert said itt was a DOCUMENTARY not a Mock-u-mentary! Dude just tried to fake it out and recycle his career beyond his drug-clouded antics!
@dafullclip I agree....It clearly was a documentary...That being said....He has cleaned himself up and deserves to continue whatever line of work he chooses. I think he was an ass during it, and I think he is an ass trying to cover it up....but he is trying to clean his life up and that's what matters most.
i dont know...letterman isnt funny, never has been, sort of snob comedy for rich uptight white newyorkers who some how are all above the working class, the homeless & the drug addicted masses just a few floors below, but i thought Pheonix was legit. goin bad on coke & was serious about rappin,(did you see sean combs face when he put his tape in?) & dave was just gettin ratings off phoenix' downfall....joaquin was abusive , scary, boardering on psychosis....thats what a great actor is.....
If anyone has seen the documentary that JP made when he wanted to become a rapper, I still can't decide whether it was staged or not, if so then he is definately a great actor, because in the doc, he acts like the biggest douche that i have ever seen, so I hope its not real. Check it out...it's documented by hs brother-in-law, Casey Affleck.
@liviasmuhmuh My last comment was made before I watched this video, so now I'm assuming that it was staged......Thank God,cause I actually felt really bad for him.
God dam letterman is a COMEDIAN!!! its his job to be sarcastic and phoenix is a burnout, sorry but it really wasnt that hard to make fun of him....... why am I wasting my time?
I am not from US (so not very familiar with the situation) but it looks like that Letterman can´t standt that Joaquin made him look fool. Is that right? He can´t get over it. So he looks even more foolish...
@L33thalLee No. he's lying in this whold second interview to cover for himself. He was so drugged out that he had to lie to cover for himself when everyone started asking questions about the first interview.
@kylesinn24 lol that's my point. I agree with you. The acting is in this interview and everybody believes that he is telling the truth. Henceforth great acting...for those who don't perceive what is going on.
I think Lettermans genuinely mad because Phoenix exposed him as kind of an insensitive asshole. Phoenix came out to that interview basically with all the signs of someone who was undergoing some sort of mental disintegration/mid life crisis/episode, and Letterman used it as comedic foil.
Crispen Glover did the same thing to Dave about 25 years ago. Dave didn't know that Glover was playing a part he had been working on and it remains one of the most memorable moments in TV history. Check it out.
I'll never watch another movie with phoenix in it again. You don't make fun of people who have gone off the deep end of life. When something like that happens, it's a tragedy.
@Spencerianism dude that is exactly what Jaoquin was trying to show. That is is a tragedy and the medias play in it. He was in no way trying to make fun of anyone. The message of that movie was powerful.
@TheBrig44 he was mocking the fact that noone has even seen his "mockumentary" which he spent the last two years of his life making lol...in other words letterman is a huge prick and is upset that juaquin showed letterman for what he really is...a lowlife heartless asshole like everyone else in hollywood, which was the whole point of phoenix and affleck making the film
"I've always liked you. I've been to see your movies. I've always liked you." Hahaha,I wonder how many people don't understand why that was so funny for Letterman to say.
@evelau How the hell was he a jerk in the first place? How would you feel if you had to interview a man who was possibly on drugs or in some type of unstable condition and KNEW he what he was going to look like in the public eye and decide to act like a fucking retard? Would you treat him like he was a great person, even if it seemed he had changed out of nowhere? My God, people act like such pussies when Letterman points out the obvious. Get over it.
it was definitely a ruse becusse when he originally came on acting like an asshole, he was in talks with casey affleck about making a film and thats when a switch went in my head.
I'm sorry but joaquin is lying. that was all very real. watch Im Still Here, it was all too real. he's snortin lines, bangin hookers, fighting people, crying, at one point he literally had his face shit on. a big theme of the movie was worry for his move to hip-hop because if that didn't work, he'd lose his house and be flat broke. I'm saying that he's spinning this to look like a rouse because he's needs to be in films. if you watch Im Still Here, you'll be convinced.
@maxcope540 , the movie is obviously above you, it's a large social experiment seeing how far the media and people like you go. It was a brilliant piece of art about questioning film, and a giant mocumentary you were clearly fooled hahaha.
@maxcope540 watch it again, with different eyes. I saw the letterman interview live and I knew he was putting on an act, you can see him crack just a bit when letterman was rippin' on his persona. It's a great movie that if you don't get you should watch again with the notion that it's all an act, and poking fun at reality tv shows. Hell even in one scene J.P say's something to the effect of: "Why are we filming us riding in a car". So many "reality" TV shows do this + cliche time lapse..
@maxcope540 I thought it was real too, but we must take into account this guy is an actor, and so he's done all he can to make the character convincing. Truly exceptional actors don't just act, they live the character. So it was real what happened, but that wasn't Joacquin Phoenix, it was like he was possessed.
@maxcope540 get the DVD and watch the special features. there's a alternate ending which has them joking about a sequel and how they should end the doco. not that you need that to be convinced it was a hoax. phoenix is a fucking god
I know he was acting. First, if you actually watch the credits you'll see people who didn't play themselves that attests to this, as well as Casey's statements. The fact that no one close to him honestly told him that his rapping sucked would probably not have happened.
What he and Casey did was explore, imo brilliantly, how when a celebrity projects the image of an iconic star for the masses, even for years on end, the moment that facade of perfection and idealism is lost, so is his support.
GOD.. this guy is just brilliant... I mean, the humilliation, him destroying his carrer... facing the worlds criticism... Joaquin's a Hell of a good actor.. those 2 years of his life, best performance ever*****
he didnt even watch the fuc*in movie!?...letterman doesnt need someone to make him look like an ass hes doin it all on his own and dragging out that ''Im gonna sue you'' bs opitimised some of the points the film raises....what a moron
@jake180289 not really self-explanatory...by your explanation, you just called Joaquin Phoenix a geezer, which means old person, which doesn't technically mean popular person. but anyway thanks for the reply. i agree Letterman wasted a perfect opportunity.
I still think this was a dumb stunt on Joaquin's part. There were people who were genuinely worried that he was just a couple of snorts away from following River to an early grave.
@sajlovesam Don't get me wrong. I wasn't suggesting that he sue b/c I agree that many Americans are sue-happy. I just meant that if Dave really decided to stick it to Joaquin, he might have a case. There are laws concerning when you can and can't use another person's likeness.
Great job on both their parts. Good for Dave caling him out on his shit and good for Joaquin for taking it like a man. I didn't tink Dave came across as a jerk but they should have let him in on the gag.
Oh, David Letterman annoys me to no end. I love how Joaquin sits there nodding and just lets Letterman sit there in awkward silence when he's expecting Joaquin to say something... XD
"No, I don't think you come of as a jerk, I think you.. " I love this moment, lol.. Well Dave the interview was publicity for your show too, so I guess you're even ;)

Actually, if Dave really wanted to be a jerk, he could legitimately sue over the issue..
jksonny 5 months ago
@jksonny sue over what??? you americans live off suing others.
sajlovesam 5 months ago 3
@sajlovesam Don't get me wrong. I wasn't suggesting that he sue b/c I agree that many Americans are sue-happy. I just meant that if Dave really decided to stick it to Joaquin, he might have a case. There are laws concerning when you can and can't use another person's likeness.

Great job on both their parts. Good for Dave caling him out on his shit and good for Joaquin for taking it like a man. I didn't tink Dave came across as a jerk but they should have let him in on the gag.

Well, Letterman may be famous in the US, but few people know him abroad. So, I guess it's "free publicity" for Letterman, actually.
kogi88 5 months ago 2
@kogi88 seeing as he's been doing his show for almost 30 years, i don't think he cares about publicity at this point
