Yeah i remember this. He still got hit and after a lap or 2 still need to make a pitstop. He drove a brilliant race, but the car was so unreliable. :(
well, this accident also proves the excellent safety of the Formula 1 cars. Not a single driver was hurt. Most of them later sat in their spare cars and started in the re-start. A few teams didn't have two spare cars and had just one driver compete later.
Spa in Belgium is a lethal track. It has killed many over the years. Its original layout was practically suicide.
Ridiculous? Perhaps? But that's what happens in a tight field in pouring rain with zero sight.
@xobrentox If you are laughing AT them then show some respect. The rain was pouring down and the mercedes mclaren driver could do very little to save that hydroplane.
@pacman599 No dude, I laugh at it because the whole thing is somewhat hilarious. It was like bumper cars out there. Give me a break here, like anyone who watches Formula 1 DOESN'T think that those drivers are the BEST in the world??!
@Stjepan105 Nobody died in that crash. It's been a long time since there has been a fatality in F1, and long may it's good safety record of late continue!!! I just hope that F1 doesn't become too sterile because of it. New circuits like Dubai are ruining the spectacle of the sport, with the massive run off areas etc.
@stevierotterdam Sory M8 but in this crash a race oficial died i know kuz i watched the race. The result of this crash is that whels ar now atached to the formula so they can fall of after crash it wuz whel that killed the track oficial
@Stjepan105 Ah, right enough- I remember that now. I was thinking a driver had died but I remember the watching the race. Tragic indeed- in that case I agree with ya- Ican't see why so many here find it funny.
I remember watchiing this live. Wasn't this in like '99 around January or something. And didn't Schumacher have something happen to his car later in the race forcing him to take out the spare?
Schumacher was probably gonna win the race but when he tried to overtake coulthard who was 1 lap or more behind the rest he crashed right into him and he couldn't finish the race, can still remember how pissed I was at Coulthard because I wanted Schumacher to win :P
This is the most funniest video on youtube. You know the driver making a hard right into the wall couldn't see shit with all the water in the air behind the other F1s. Then through the plume of cloud, 10 F1s come crashing into the mess not knowing what's ahead ROFL.
@Wilkopops Me too, I was hoping to find it but no-one seems to have uploaded a version!! Boooh!! If you or anyone have seen it please report it to the helpdesk, thank you ;-)
That's a friggin' lot of energy flying around out there! I remember watching this and thinking that those guys really do have nerves of steel. They're simply not within the normal range when it comes to self preservation instinct. Clearly those guys were standing behind the door when it was handed out. Hope Massa kicks Hamilton's ass this coming season. He deserves to.
How's this stuff with M.S making a comeback? I hope he's not delusional when he says he's competative cos I'd love to see a wild card mixing up the top order. Bernie E is putting a very positive spin on it though, saying forget about M.S winning races...rather think of him winning the title. But of course, B.E's thinking of the TV ratings isn't he...while all the other drivers must be thinking, oh crap!! Not this guy again! Maybe there'll be another racing boot kicking H's ass :-)
Undamaged... Hakkinen, Schumacher, Hill, Ralf (sort of - he was the Jordan who parked up when everyone bombed on through into each other) then 1 Minardi (Nakano or Tuero?) who was right at the back. Notice the tyre at 0:10ish... bounced off the fence, that could have been so much worse. Also I swear the black Arrows speeds up as it heads into the crash... xD
Hill (Jordan), Ralf Schumacher (Jordan), Alesi (Sauber), Frentzen (Williams), Diniz (Arrows), Trulli (Prost) who all got points, in that order - then Coulthard (McLaren) and Nakano (Minardi) who were 5 laps down because they went out again after damage.
It started with David, he lost control and hit the wall to his right then when slid across track into the other, which caught some of the other drivers out thous creating a chain reaction, it didn't help the fact it was raining
it was red flagged and restarted. spa 1998. see ralph in the yellow jordan on the right of the screen, parked on the grass while the accident happened, then he drove off unscathed
Yes, I agree. Better take it serious. It was just good luck that no wheel hit a steward (if they did not...), as it happened in Monza ´00 and Australia ´01... I hope those things will NEVER happen again, because even nowadays I think there had been some "runaway" wheels despite the steel cables attaching them to the car body frame...
This big wreck was caused by DC. his left rear went off the road and hit the patch of mud/grass and he spun to his right causing the big crash. There was a vid where you could see his tire hit the patch but I can't seem to find anymore.
I remember my father, brother and uncle were there, in the tribunes you see in the video. It must've been exciting to see something like that! I was 9 years old and watching just a few miles away from the track.. Remember it very well!
