  • I like this version better:D

  • Yes Lord!!!

  • I was driving log truck when this song came out,I liked it so much I bought the casset at wal-mart and still have it and I still like to listen to it...good music indeed

  • Comment removed

  • was 20 yrs old when this came out. Livin' in Nashville, TN. Hated country music until I moved there. WOW! Loved this band.

  • I forgot about this song! Love the TWANG! And these guys were better than B&D and they really had something going!

  • @bigjohnrhg Oh sweet doggy ,yup, it sure was nice unless yall were black or a woman or gay !!!

  • @MustangCoupe1951 All of the archive footage are News Reel outtakes (1909 to 1927), not Hollywood recreations - so those are the real people. The guy holding the large award/cup is Yakima Canutt who had just won a bronc competition (1917?). The 1880s only had still images. As for the 1980s - the Radney and Bill performance footage was shot April 2, 1988.

  • @FosterLloydFan Radney done a great thing for the rodeo world and cowboys in general when he wrote this song,i started riding bulls the year this song came out and it seems a lil corny but i would play this song in my mind as i was pulling my rope and it seemed to trigger the right additude to give my best!!and the funny thing is ,i wasnt the only cowboy who did this,,haha!!great song thanks Radney and God Bless!!!

  • @FosterLloydFan Old Yak was a movie Cowboy as well. Imagine some of them fake idoits we have now trying to ride a horse without killin himself

  • Great tune and video, but there is no way that footage is from the 1880s. Hollywood feature films were not even of that quality until well after the turn of the century.

  • @MustangCoupe1951

Shut up fool! Enjoy what's been shown and appreciate w/o your stupid ass comment!

  • I love this song always have but love the footage even more.

  • Great tune. Loved it the first time I heard it. Texas in 1880 hadn't been free since the spanish arrived to 'civilize' and 'convert' those God put here first. Now look what has happened - the newcomers have killed off all that was 'wild' and 'free' in their misguided effort to bring 'civilization' to a free and wild Way of life. Oughtta think before we try to bring the 'blessings' of civilization to others. Free Leonard Peltier.

  • one of my all time favorite songs!!

  • I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS ALBUM. IT HAS BEEN 25 YEARS SINCE I HAD THIS ALBUM AND ONE NIGHT SITTING IN THE TEXAS ROADHOUSE STEAK HOUSE I HEARD IT PLAY ON THE JUKEBOX.

  • Original Texas Red Dirt. Favorite quote of all time is by Kevin Costner in Fandango " Texas is Wild, always has been, always will be"

  • They remind me so much of Tears For Fears. I know I'll get weird looks for saying that, but in some ways, they are the Tears For Fears of country music. I heard this song when I was 5 years old.

  • Reminds me of trucking back in the 80s, long nose Pete, pointed west, hammer down hammer lane headed for El Paso on I10 with this song rockin the speakers with the cb crackling in the dark.

  • This and "Sure Thing" were great late 80's tunes from these boys. Back when Reba, and Garth were newcomers. These guys were right up there with the best.. really wish they were still on the radio now. LIke Dwight Yoakam... recorded hundreds of great songs and 3 get on the air that people know about.

  • I love the video. it's AWESOME!

  • best song ever, Long live the cowboys

  • radney foster is not only the best talent most ppl have never heard of......he may very well be the best talent period!

  • Texas baby....wouldnt live anywhere else

  • One of the best rodeo videos ever. Being a bullrider myself for 17 years this is a great song. Just looking at them singing bugs me, but the old footage is incredible. Great song, very emotional for the life I spent in the best form I could have asked for, miss my rodeo days. God bless ya' all.

  • this song taketh me back to the 1980s. love it

  • @jjhalkett My apology jihalkett.I guess I was a little harsh. Sorry...

  • I am and have always been in love with this song and I love Radney Foster's work. What a great artist. I love cowboy way of life and I wish I could go back there too. I can't get enough of going to rodeo's and just dreaming about the old west. God Bless the U.S.A. and it's historic past!

  • Who is the guitarist to Radney's left ? He's a talent and a half. Has turned up on many a video by several artists, Steve Earle, Mary Chapin Carpenter...

  • @keitheeweithee

    @keitheeweithee That's Mike McAdam.

HUGE talent. I hope he doesn't read this.

  • A SONG I GREW UP WITH IN TEXAS. I HEARD IT AND SAID "DAMN I WISH I COULD GO BACK TO THAT TIME". I THINK I COULD HAVE TAKEN OUT BILLY THE KID MY OTHER HERO!!! JUST KDDING, BUT A GREAT SONG AND GREAT ARTISTS SINGING AND PICKING!

  • Anybody got a copy of "Version of the Truth?" I'd happily buy it if someone can tell me where, but I can't get the song out of my head. Help!

  • Man, what a cheesey video

  • @clayto1332 Cheesey??, Your'e kidding right..?.. why are you even on an F&L vid man???

  • @keitheeweithee I happened to cover this song in a band I played in so I think I have the right...

  • @clayto1332 thats cool youv'e covered this tune in your group! (and sorry about my harsh reply to your comment)

  • This is some good shit... love radney fosters music, especially when he was with bill lloyd.

  • Radney and Bill hit #18 in Billboard, 6-11-88. Hope you're not offended by this, but, God bless! I'm a Christian, and it's how I always end my comments.

  • i really wish nashville had their shit together this is some good stuff here

  • A couple of other commenters & I were discussing

differences between today & 1880. If you don't want

to read serious discussions, then don't read

comments. And show some maturity by not hurling

obscenities. The great majority of the cowboys I've

known through the decades have that maturity.

You could stand to learn some of it from them.

  • I love everything about Radney Foster! Wish more music was like this

  • Thanks for posting some real country music!

  • I love this song and Radney. My Aunt was married to his Uncle, Del Rio, Texas , love it!!!!

  • @rackasaurus-I'm an avocational historian of the

American West & I've spent a lot of time on some

of the big ranches of West Texas. Many years ago

I interviewed oldtimers about the experiences of

their parents who had been members of ranching

families in West Texas in the 1870's & 80's near

the end of the conflicts with Apaches. If you want to

get a little taste of Old Texas go on the Big Bend

Ranch State Park Texas Longhorn Cattle Drive. I

have lots of info on other things to see.

  • @LoneTinaja I appreciate your insight and input, Lone Tinaja . By the way, you have a very interesting screen name

  • @LoneTinaja

    Texans fought the Commanches.

This great state was a large part of Commancheria.

A real war unlike most of the conflict with Indians on this continent.

No quarter was asked for and none was given.

  • So bigjohnrhg says he'd like to go back to those days.

If he was able to do that he would need to get all his

living in quick. The average life expectancy was about

40 years, & for a cowboy it was even less. In the

decades before antibiotics, as well as knowledge

about proper wound care, small wounds would often

progess to a serious infection then systemic sepsis

which was fatal. Cowboying in that era was not

    romantic. It still ain't.

  • @LoneTinaja Yes, you are right about that. I've thought about that aspect of it myself, but what I'm absolutely positive of, regarding what bigjohnrhg meant, can be explained with one word - Simplicity. I agree with you, medically speaking, but I also most certainly agree with him as well. I wish I could do the same and step back to that time.

  • @LoneTinaja It just takes a cetain type of man. My grandfather did it (died at 72), my paternal grandfather did it (died at age 68), I did it for over 15 years and still break mustangs. Life was hard that is true, but not all of those who did it were as ignorant of the dangers as you portray, and anti-biotics were absent until mid 1900's, so that is not really anything specific to cowboys lifespan. Given the choice of today or back then, would really take some hard thinking, but I would say then

  • @icewater75074 My comment didn't imply that

cowboys were ignorant of the dangers. I'm a former

Army Medical Service Corps officer & I've long

studied 19th century U.S. public health, especially

in the West. The lack of antibiotics was a major

factor why the average life expectancy was short.

Of course many people lived to old age. Sadly

though, a fairly large percentage of children died

of infectious diseases. That's why I'm glad I was

born in the mid 20th century.

  • @LoneTinaja okay chill out lone tinaja, we dont need a history lesson over a music video. im pretty sure NONE of us give a fucking shit about the public health in the west in the 1800s right now.

  • I love it and my Texas.

  • @droodslol Is Texas cool? I'm a wannabe cowpoke.. tell me more...

    Thanks, CIRKLEK

  • I love this duo and this video. I sort of forgot about these guys until I came across them in a "Desert Rose" mix here on You Tube. The old footage fascinates me totally. I realize why I always wanted to be, and admired cowboys. Thanks a bunch circleK

  • Saw Radney at the Cabaret. A little older, little grayer. Still freakin' awesome!!!

  • This song was really made in 1987? Jesus.... I thought it was from 2002 or so

  • Just checking in again on this great song! When mIbecome educated enuff I will post a vid showing the spot wher a nasty bitch came back on me, just like in this vid. The property is still ,in the family

  • I love this song and what it stands for. I can relate to it as my ol man would put me on these crazy basterds( we , or should I say HE as I did not have a choice, used to take on all the "problem horses" in the community. What ever it took to put groceries on the table!

My whole life has been horses and I love it! I am poor by todays standards but would not change a thing..

  • These guys were great back in the day, I still appreciate their music.

The Indian footage are Navajo's. It looks like it might be the Navajo Nation fair that the footage was taken at.

  • I love this song. You don't hear good stuff like this any more. And Radney's a truly good guy.

  • Great music ... great musicians ... GREAT VIDEO!!!

  • yeah! GREAT SONG AND GREAT COMMENTS.I

  • Texas 1880 a truly FREE time and place, man I'd give my left nut to be able to go back to those days.

  • They just don't put music out like this anymore

  • amen my brother

  • Love It!

  • Damn fine!

  • Thanks for posting this awesome song.

  • Aaaaah....the original! Making "new country a good 25 years before itr was chic, and not having the bimbo or stuffed gym rat out front. Real stuff, and great songwriting to boot.

Radney Foster is the best talent most people have never heard of. This song is the one that got me starting singing. Kudos for posting.

  • @ldolphin34 Yeah.. Well don't quit your day job. CircleK

  • @ldolphin34 exactly..the original, not some redone, remix...heard him sing it with another guy and it just isnt the same...got me singin then too....

  • @olhobbler You're referring to the version with Pat Green, Everything about the Foster/Green version is better except for Pat Green singing in the second verse.

  • JUST LIKE TEXAS IN 1880!!! A KICK ASS TUNE . thanks for posting.

  • Our band can play this song hehe lol....

Great Song! thanks for the post....=)

  • pin another number to the back of my shirt

  • I used to rope and me and my buddies used to listen to this on the way home while we would get drunker than shit. Always made it home! Thanks!!!!

  • Great tune. Thanks for posting.

  • If I ever hit it in my music endeavors, I have to say this is the song that inspired me to try singing the first time.

I was 22, a DJ at a country station in Wyoming. We shut down at 11pm. I would kill the transmit but not the rest of the system (use their mixing), kick my mike to "monitor" and put on different songs to sing along from the 60s to 1988 (today then). Singing this song gave me that fuzzy feeling in the pit of my stomach.

I've won two karaoke contests and wrote 58 songs since

  • if anyone could find the one with radney foster and pat green that would be great. i've looked every where for it and can't find it

  • I love you CLAY (only when your cool)

  • remember me (clay)

  • Radney Forster goes hard, I fuckin love this song

  • Great job, but they sure don't look the part.

  • I actually bought this album because the liner notes were really funny.

That and the fact that it had Vince Gill and John Cowan on it. Cowan sings the high (but not too lonesome) harmony on this song.

  • The guy singing with the glasses reminds me of Bill Hicks.

  • Pat green redid this song and i like it a little better that this.

  • pat green didn't redo this song. it was a radney foster song with pat green singing instead of bill lloyd. pat green never released this song as his own

  • Comment removed

  • This song is great and this video shows the great American history of rodeo. I love it. Look at the cowboys and Indians marching together with old glory. What does this say to the world? USA will make it right one way or the other. My favorite clip I enjoy watching is at 0:32-0:38 is that calf roping event. Can anyone post the music video of "Texas in 1880" he did with Pat Green, because I would like it if someone posted that video Radney did with Pat Green on youtube, and I would like to see it

  • are you mock-en me boy!

  • By God! And I really mean by God! I do not care where U R from in the 48, If you havbe ever had A HORSE COME DOWN ON YOU , You know what i MEAN! TALK TO ME BROTHERS!

  • This vid is so much more then an awesome song! God, Almighty cannot you see the art being before you? Look at the cowboys and Indians marching together with old glory. What does this say to the world? USA will make it right one way or the other.

  • I love this song!

  • this is what country music should be. it shows the hard work and determination that made our country great, before we became so worried about hurting peoples self esteem. great old footage.

i believe the old cowboy with the trophy went on to become a silent movie star

  • Well said.

  • best song ever

  • They did not put out enough songs. I really enjoyed their style.

  • F&L had blown their video budget after CRAZY OVER YOU. SURE THING needed a video and didnt get one, so F&L called and personally commissioned me to create the TEXAS video. The video was a hit and won some awards. Since F&L funded the video, I guess RCA was casual about the release plus its in B&W so its tougher to see the switch. For me, it made me the it music video director for RCA for a short time. I still like the video and forgot about the switch until you mentioned it!! STEVE BOYLE

  • I Directed this video in 1987 and let me tell you - you win the prize! No one has EVER caught the guitar switch! It was Bills little joke!! Honestly, I didn't notice when we shot it. He made the switch first and told me later (I was busy and wasn't expecting him to pull that). I sweated it a bit when it went for review to RCA, but they didn't notice either. Congrats for having a good eye! After over 20 years of airing Bill has finally been caught! Steve Boyle

  • Good catch.

  • Late 80's through mid 90's country was the country music I grew up on. That's the country I remember and that country will always be the best.

  • Pure Country Gold

  • Love this song! Is there a video for the song Sure Thing by them from this same album???

  • This is what country music is supposed to sound like

  • absoulutely amazing song.. one of the greatest country songs ever!!!

  • rate me 1-10 B

  • The late 80´s and the early 90´s was one of the best periods of country music.

This guys and the The O´Kanes were really great.

  • I totally agree. That's the country I grew up with. It doesn't get any better than that.

  • if ur reading this and bored t

  • i love this song its awesome!!

  • Y'all got that right. I think 1860 would be about perfect.

  • Anytime between 1860 and 1890. Now that was a great era! I would like to meet my great great grandparents. Especially Polly Ann Raincrow who walked the Trail of Tears and Bill Cook who was in the Cook gang. He ended up murdered on his farm by someone unknown in 1899.

  • dude- I've never heard this version- which sounds like the original- I recall the one for the late 90's or early 2000's..

  • this is her, man.

  • so there are two different versions of this?

  • the next version was done as Pat green and randy foster which is good but it not as good as this one which is the orginial

  • Wow, I didn't know steve E was connected to F&Lin any way...thats interesting. One of my favorite songs thanks for putting the vid up, I'd never seen it.

  • That's Michael McAdam on the right playing guitar ,one of Steve Earle 's Dukes at that point in time.

  • My favorite country music is what i grew up listening to in the 80's and early 90's. And this is one of the songs. I like to listen to it when i'm jumping a horse in a show on the Horseland jr game, it goes with it perfectly. Radney re released this song last year.

  • Texas in 1880 Need to go get the Winchester

  • I love the song, but they look like hippies.

  • So what? Who cares what they look like. you some sorta squarehead or what?

  • Am I seeing things are does Radney Foster look kinda like Billie Jean King, the early 70's tennis champ??

  • LOL!

  • I believe that that's the great Bill Lloyd on high harmony vocals there. And Radney isn't from Bowling Green but Bill is.

  • Brings back a lot of great memories from the days of country '80's music. LOVE Radney Foster's music!

  • best ever... reminds me of having horses... going to get some more horses because of this song

  • the great John Cowan on high harmony vocals ...

  • does anyone have the newer video he did with pat green back in.........2001-2002?

  • Yes, this is a Radney song.

  • I'm shocked that this guy looks like a hippy!

  • Wow. That you very much for reminding me of good times back in my high school days. God Bless.

  • Is there a video for "a sure thing"? Thanks

  • Cant wait to hear him on Sept. 20 in Brenham Texas

  • Love that tune when i am rolling 18 wheels across the southwest!

  • f*ck that rocked

  • This song is great and this video shows the great American history of rodeo. I love it.

  • Go, Bill! So far as I see, we don't have any really fine Presidential material stepping up to the plate.

You might oughtta Run. You could win!

  • cool song, i remember this tune for way back in the day. man, they sure don't make country music like this any more.

  • Great song, thanks for posting

  • I love this!!! This song is awesome! Keep these videos coming!

  • Great tune!!! Somehow....it always brings a tear to my eye....in a very good way!!
