Hey how do you tell if a 52 reissue american tele is Really an American? I bought one at a pawn shop and there are no serial numbers on the exterior. I took the neck off and there are a bunch of numbers and a date but how do you tell if its REALLY an American? I bought it for $500 with a G&G Tweed Hardshell and the ashguard and extra bridge plate and wiring diagram for a 52 tele. Please help Anyone!? Thanks
@bearsafetyus if you look at the back of the neck there should be a large American flag on the metal connecting the neck and body. hope this helped, this is only referring to my own 52 reissue though so it may vary ;)
does it say made in U.S.A. anywhere on the guitar?...I only ask because i'm looking into buying one but don't know for sure if its the real deal.....how do I know? Its priced as the real deal, but i'm not paying top price for MIM
@JoeTelly Yeah, you're right. As I explained on the video, I couldn't really turn it up because my kids were sleeping. I keep meaning to do another video with the volume up, because it really opens up the sound and possibilities on this guitar, especially the varied sounds you get just by adjusting the tone knob. As an example, the bridge pickup with the tone knob down more than halfway is killer-almost a woman tone.
You're lucky, I can't even play my Charvel unplugged without waking my mom up, seriously I think that woman has super-hearing, either that or I'm deaf
I just put gibson 57 classics in my Les Paul and it sounds much better, but I don't know if that's the way to go with a tele. I think you'd lose a little of the character of the guitar that shines through single coils, but like everything else, it's a matter of preference.
You're not the first person to mention that. Maybe it's the angle of the video or that I'm sitting down. I think it has a longer neck (definitely longer than a Les Paul, for example).
i always love how natural the tele pups seem to sound. So simple, so effective and addicting. I love these guitars. You can really get any tone from them!
i love teles .......but whenever i see someone playing one ... they tend to stay on the neck " pickup !!! whats with that ?? try the " bridge "pickup " ..it also has wonderful "tones ".
@gittar1 You're right, especially on this particular guitar, the bridge pickup is sweet, and is not the stereotypical biting sound that tele bridge pick-ups are supposedly known for. And using the tone knobs brings out a lot of different sounds, especially when the amp is turned up.
Well, I'm gonna' go out on a limb and say that's just the 60 cycle hum. 90% of single-coil pickups out there do that for various technical reasons. My not-so-technical advice is to avoid standing next to laptops, TVs, most light sources, check all electrical grounds, and if none of that is helping, buy a subtle noise suppressor. Off the top of my head, I'd recommend the Electro-Harmonix HumDebugger b/c it's not really a noise suppressor, it just kills buzzing (from what I've read). Good luck!
I'd add that this particular guitar-the 52 and the reissue, are notorious for that; no shielding in the body or on the pickguard; the pickups are not out of phase, so using both does no good. If you touch the strings when you're not playing, that will help quite a bit.
I bought the same guitar when it first came out in 1994. I paid 900 for it. It now runs for 1300 new. I love it but the neck pickup is muddy. It comes with the three saddle bridge attached but they also give you the six saddle. I prefer the six saddle because it provides better intonation.
I paid about 1200, now it sells for a whopping $1,800. I agree with you to some extent about the neck pickup. If it is not opened up all the way, you can lose a lot on the high end, even with the volume turned up, but even within its limitations, it is one sweet pickup. With the volume cranked, it's even better.
The answer why the neck pick up sounds muddy is because in old guitar there were 3 different settings for the switch: Bridge (with tone control), Neck (with tone control) Neck (WITHOUT tone control, and the tone fully down). That was just how those guitars were built in that time. And Fender wanted to make almost an exact copy so they also copied the switch settings
I think part of that was that I had the volume pretty low, and although I try to add mids through the amp, I can't remember what the setting was.
Teles definitely sound different than strats, though, yet if I had it cranked a bit on the rhythm pickup with the tone control wide open (or mixed te pick ups), you'd hear some nice snap. You can get a lot of surprising tones out of this guitar.
I know you were only demoing the guitar, but some advice, leave the scales alone man, you were racing through scales soo fast, and yet couldent play little wing with any feeling whatsoever
Yeah, I know. That's because I don't really know how to play Little Wing. I was just winging it, trying to figure it out. I'm not sure if you've played this guitar, but it makes you honest.
Hey I have a 52 tele, about a year old. I use string gauge 10s on it. The neck is killing me though cuz its so tacky, glossy, and sticky. I am over exaggerating slighty but when I play my 57 les paul reissue with an ebony neck, which is the smoothest neck I have ever played, i really notice how sticky the 52 neck is.
Is there any way to get rid of this tacky feel so that I can fly on the neck or is that just one of the draw backs of the guitar that I must live with. Are all 52s like that.
The stick the nitro's finish on the back of the neck. Davo is right, get some steel wool and just take the top layer of the finish off and that should make it better for you.
I am not crazy about this neck sound either (I do not own this guitar). If I wanted a strat, I would buy a strat. Tele neck pus are different. You might want to try a Lollar neck pickup if you would be willing to replace it. I posted a vid of my sound with one, if you want to hear. It's the best tele neck pu I think.
Nah, I like this neck pickup. This video didn't do it justice, because I had to keep the volume on the amp low, and it's a tube that needs a little push for that full sound. When that happens, it sounds awesome.
yea my lp's neck gets sticky once in a while when playing since your hand gets sweaty. ive been told to use lighter fluid by some pretty knowledgeable people (not joking btw)
i dont know about that. ive got an epiphone les paul custom, and im actually saving up at the moment to buy a tele 52 reissue. this guitar is absolutely insane
i agree, the "high end" epi les pauls are somewhat decent, but at those prices you might as well spring for a gibson les paul sutdio or somewhere around that. epi hollow bodies are nice like you stated.
OP - verrrrry nice video man. i love tele's and have been lookin around for a decent priced one for some time now. love watchin demos to get me amped up for when i finally get one of my own :D
Epi LP I'm not terribly familiar with. They're two different sounds, but I would think the Tele is much more versatile, and better made (if it's the American).
Great playin' man, I couldent help but notice the vintage fender amp in the back, sounds beautiful, how does the tele handle on some Keith Richards Sounds?
that's a 1968 fender super reverb, early February, still blackface on the inside, all original components. When cranked with the tele, with no effects, it sounds awesome, pure, wood, tone, raw.
thanks for this ive been interested in a 52 for 5 or 6 years and never got round to it, nice of you to do this for us who are interested in a review of a great sounding guitar, as i always play strats, nice playing also...
Is that the Japan made model? I hope it is 'cause I have '52 RI Japan neck pickup that I haven't installed yet and if it sounds like that ...I'll be more than happy.
what's "heavy?" well, to some extent, he may be right. the SG has humbuckers, so we're talking apples and oranges. there is no guitar for every occasion, and although the humbuckers, as in an SG (although I'm not crazy about the wide neck on an SG) definitely have more UMPH, you might take some comfort in knowing that the first Zeppelin album was record with a Telecaster. In fact, the solo on Stairway to Heaven was recorded with a tele. it is indescribable the breadth of this guitar.
Just like punk rock or post hardcore music not heavy metal, but know that you mention that the solo of stair way to heaven was played on a tele I think I should be good thx
UMMMM "heaviness" comes from how u hit the thing... tom moreelo from Rage agains the machine... tele!! versatile plus... metal heads will always go for lotsa gain and humbuckers to hide any true tone coming from the actual instrument... great guitars!
That's a fantastic Tele and when you get a lot better you should play some slinky country licks, instead of blooby blobby whatever it is the hell you're doin.
Doubt I'll get a lot better, sorry to disappoint, however, I'd be happy to listen to some of the slinky country licks you're talking about if you name some tunes, but I just hope you're talking about older country and not just Brad Paisley (although he's fast and plays a tele). Do you play guitar, too?
Hey ! Check out my Tele I've told you about with the Antiquities : Ruff N Ready Band . Young Blood or All Right Now ... I use the Double Trouble Pedal from Visual Sound and the Danelectro echo pedal .
Amazing sound and amazing play, liked the way you introduced this telecaster, really love this sound, and hey! you got me with that little wing hahaha amazing sound! thx for this vid
the guitar looks and sounds beautiful, I played it once in a store. i prefer the feel of new teles better though, cause of the bigger frets and faster neck.
by the way , I'm playin my James Trussart Steelcaster on All Right Now wich is such an amazing guitar ... the sound guy mixed me way down so I was kinda mad when I watched it back afterwards, but all ego aside, it's a good version , you can feel our energy coming through , I think ...
weird, I recently checked out this guitar in a shop, and I found that the neck pickup sounded to dark, like if the tone knob was all the way down, and the bridge pickup was way to sharp, but you don't seem to have that big EQ change. could that be because there was still plastic over the pickups?
No, that's the original 50's wiring ... The neck pickup position turns the tone to a minimum ..my best advice : find somebody who knows how to change pickups, buy a set of Seymour Duncan Antiquities , ask him for "modern wiring" and you have one of the best souding Tele's you'll ever hear ...
no problem ... what I forgot to metion is that the original 50's wiring goes like this : front position :neck pickup with tone turned down ( that was before the invention of bass guitars , they needed a bassy sound to reproduce the sound of a double bass ) , second position : neck pickup , and back position : bridge pickup . The modern wiring goes like this : front position : neck pickup , middle position : neck AND bridge pickup at the same time ,and normal back position.
Just to add to what pat976 said: the guitar came with a kit to convert the wiring to modern. I haven't done it, and have left it as the original 50's wiring. You can still, however, get the combo neck/bridge pickup by positioning the selector to between the bridge and middle (neck) positions. The old strats were like this for positions 2 and 4 as well--you had to find the spot. Now the strats come in 5 position, and the teles 3.
Right. That sound is curiously usable ( somewhat reminiscent of a strat' in between position )and I recommend getting the modern wiring. What I haven't tried yet though is the two p/u together as a humbucker...that must be interesting. Can anybody comment on that ?
I believe you're talking about the tele deluxe with the S-1 switch, which makes the two pickups act like a humbucker, or are in series or parallel; whatever it is, it fattens up the sound.
no , I just saw that Fender makes a replacement 4 way switch for teles and read about that particular pick up configuration... I am curious to hear what it sounds like.
Great Guitar you have there! I just bought my second AV'52RI becuase I foolishly traded my '05 '52RI towards a CS Strat that i ended up selling... These are the best of the bang for the buck!
$1200 at your favourite Fender retail store ... I recommend changing the pick ups to Duncan Antiquities as I said before and stripping most of that crappy lacquer from the body and neck ... makes for a much better guitar .I'm loving mine, it replaced my $3000 plus Trussart Steelcaster as my main stage axe... that's how good it is now...
A lot of people buy it for the lacquer finish. You're probably referring to its sticky qualities, which you can feel when you sweat. The real disappointment, though, is that Fender did not openly advertise that underneath the lacquer is a thin layer of polyurethane, not on the original, and which will prevent actually wearing through to the body for a true vintage effect--or at least slow it by years.
I got somebody to strip all that for me and it feels and looks awesome . A totally different guitar. Any knick shows to the wood now, like they would on an old one. It just looks more authentic in my opinion. Did you know the original ones did not have all that lacquer on them ?I was talking to the guy that worked on mine and his theory is that Fender puts a ridiculous amount of coats of that crap on it so that if you want a more authentic one , you have to get one from the custom shop (more $).
GREAT PLAYING TOO!

Doubt I'll get a lot better, sorry to disappoint, however, I'd be happy to listen to some of the slinky country licks you're talking about if you name some tunes, but I just hope you're talking about older country and not just Brad Paisley (although he's fast and plays a tele). Do you play guitar, too?

the guitar looks and sounds beautiful, I played it once in a store. i prefer the feel of new teles better though, cause of the bigger frets and faster neck.

by the way , I'm playin my James Trussart Steelcaster on All Right Now wich is such an amazing guitar ... the sound guy mixed me way down so I was kinda mad when I watched it back afterwards, but all ego aside, it's a good version , you can feel our energy coming through , I think ...

weird, I recently checked out this guitar in a shop, and I found that the neck pickup sounded to dark, like if the tone knob was all the way down, and the bridge pickup was way to sharp, but you don't seem to have that big EQ change. could that be because there was still plastic over the pickups?
drmsgtrplayer 3 years ago
No, that's the original 50's wiring ... The neck pickup position turns the tone to a minimum ..my best advice : find somebody who knows how to change pickups, buy a set of Seymour Duncan Antiquities , ask him for "modern wiring" and you have one of the best souding Tele's you'll ever hear ...

thanks
drmsgtrplayer 3 years ago
no problem ... what I forgot to metion is that the original 50's wiring goes like this : front position :neck pickup with tone turned down ( that was before the invention of bass guitars , they needed a bassy sound to reproduce the sound of a double bass ) , second position : neck pickup , and back position : bridge pickup . The modern wiring goes like this : front position : neck pickup , middle position : neck AND bridge pickup at the same time ,and normal back position.
pat976 3 years ago
Just to add to what pat976 said: the guitar came with a kit to convert the wiring to modern. I haven't done it, and have left it as the original 50's wiring. You can still, however, get the combo neck/bridge pickup by positioning the selector to between the bridge and middle (neck) positions. The old strats were like this for positions 2 and 4 as well--you had to find the spot. Now the strats come in 5 position, and the teles 3.
bassmike65 3 years ago
Right. That sound is curiously usable ( somewhat reminiscent of a strat' in between position )and I recommend getting the modern wiring. What I haven't tried yet though is the two p/u together as a humbucker...that must be interesting. Can anybody comment on that ?
pat976 3 years ago
I believe you're talking about the tele deluxe with the S-1 switch, which makes the two pickups act like a humbucker, or are in series or parallel; whatever it is, it fattens up the sound.
bassmike65 3 years ago
no , I just saw that Fender makes a replacement 4 way switch for teles and read about that particular pick up configuration...

I recommend changing the pick ups to Duncan Antiquities as I said before and stripping most of that crappy lacquer from the body and neck ... makes for a much better guitar .I'm loving mine, it replaced my $3000 plus Trussart Steelcaster as my main stage axe... that's how good it is now...
pat976 3 years ago
A lot of people buy it for the lacquer finish. You're probably referring to its sticky qualities, which you can feel when you sweat. The real disappointment, though, is that Fender did not openly advertise that underneath the lacquer is a thin layer of polyurethane, not on the original, and which will prevent actually wearing through to the body for a true vintage effect--or at least slow it by years.
bassmike65 3 years ago
I got somebody to strip all that for me and it feels and looks awesome . A totally different guitar. Any knick shows to the wood now, like they would on an old one. It just looks more authentic in my opinion. Did you know the original ones did not have all that lacquer on them ?I was talking to the guy that worked on mine and his theory is that Fender puts a ridiculous amount of coats of that crap on it so that if you want a more authentic one , you have to get one from the custom shop (more $).
pat976 3 years ago
Not surprised they would do that. I know they later made a 52 reissue "thin skin" with less lacquer, and yeah, I've heard about the 4-way switch.
Hey, dig your cover of Into the Mystic--such a great song. Are you the singer or playing acoustic in the video?

Thanks ...I'm the guitar player. check out our cover of All Right Now ( a little too fast , but it was live TV , so the adrenaline was pumping...)
