Truth is EACH ONE has his own genius. Chet had a touch that no one else had at his time, and beats many up to today. Just like Cyril Pahinui has a touch that his Dad did not have and Pops had his own touch of genius that no one else could copy or come close to.
it's called Ke Kali Nei Au by Charles E. King (1874-1950), a very famous Hawaiian composer. When Andy Williams recorded it in '59 (a Grammy nomination) and then Elvis in '61 as 'Hawaiian Wedding Song', naturally the song became more widely known as such. It is in fact a song traditionally played and sung in Hawaiian at weddings. Awesome rendition by Chet... wish you could have edited Ruth out of this clip though.
@62Elvis ummm Paul McCartney plays the bass and piano. By no means is he a guitar genius. If you like Chet you need to look into some Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits. He was by all means a true guitar genius as well, and actually made and album with Chet called "Neck to Neck".
@Igamikun Paul McCartney lays many instruments, not just bass and keyboards. But few have the pure talent that Chet had on guitar. Tommy Emmanuel is close, Jerry Reed was close and others are wonderful fingerpickers and some cover Chet very well, but he was the original. Roy Clark is very good, but he's not in Chet's class either. I'd say give a close look to those Chet gave the honorary CGP to. They are the cream of the crop of guitarists, not just friends.
"Years from now, after I'm gone, someone will listen to what I've done and know I was here. They may not know or care who I was, but they'll hear my guitars speaking for me. "
@Guitarstring187 I'm 21 and I can't help but agree...I love the sound of resonators--with or without a slide! And I'd surely love to get a resonator one day.
@Alpha7xxx I only said that because the other person said that they don't understand why resonators aren't more popular with people that age. Why do you care that I mentioned my age? It's not like I told you that you were an idiot or anything...in fact, I didn't even insult you. Now, I kind of want to though.
Well done Chet, it takes me back to when my Wife & I were at the Cultural Centre in OAHU I believe that;s where Elvis sang that song in the movie when he was getting married, Hawaii is the Heaven of the Earth, Agnes & Robert
That chick makes me want to shove a chop stick in my eye and swirl my brain around. Chet was a god. Wish he was still here with us, but he had to go home.
