I found that when many people mention Taiwan history, they usually just mention KMT or ROC part. I think that's due to the sources they got(usually about Taiwan' relationship with China?) It will make a difference if some more are mentioned: 1. TW was first ruled by Dutch. 2. TW was ruled and modernized by Japanese before KMT came. 3. 6 million of Taiwanese lived on the island before KMT came. 4. 98% are categorized as Han Chinese, but many of them are actually mixed with aborigines.
@bctvanw Sure, but if you Google "German History" you will get a mass of results for World War 2 and hardly anything about the 18th century - people care about the most recent or most influential events. The Dutch colonial history in Taiwan has no influence on the 800-1200 missiles pointed at Formosa today.
@fuyanfu27118177 You know, China didn't have a seat in the UN until 1972. Should I be swearing at you right now? Calm down and write down your argument in proper form, this is a place for exchanging ideas, not lobbing feces at each other like chimps in a zoo. Have a nice day.
I'm french and I fall in love with taiwan, Im' just going there for business, but would like to go there more often. taiwanese are so gentle, so nice and friendly, the food is great, that is just an awesome country with awesome people!
As American born Taiwan, I can tell you, all Chinese, that Taiwan with the support from US and all Western countries will get independence (as de jury) in the future! Taiwanese is NOT Chinese. We are more educated than Chinese!!!!!!
As American born Taiwan, I can tell you, all Chinese, that Taiwan with the support from US and all Western countries will get independence (as de jury) in the future! Taiwanese is NOT Chinese. We are more educated than Chinese!!!
just want to point out that there's no 'pure' Han Chinese, not even in China. Taiwanese are not Han Chinese, can't blame you as this racial issue has been muddled in Taiwan for hundreds of years since our first contact wit the Chinese. Even today not many Taiwanese people know their true identity, as a hybridity of Aborigine, Pingpu, Hakka and Hokkien people. Thanks for your video :)
I wasn't keen to finish Part 1, thinking it was a family video and some cliche commentary on the Taiwanese. But you did such a fabulous job in your research contents on the culture and lifestyle of the Taiwanese that I completed watching all 25 parts of it. Many thanks from an ethnic Chinese. It makes me want to visit Taiwan.
I really like how you did the research so thoroughly and carefully on this subject...I thank you on behalf of the many ppl in Taiwan : ) u did a great job!
you really studied your facts. glad to hear that you said taiwan was never ruled by the PRC. research also shows china in her history never ruled taiwan AT ALL!! china has always neglected taiwan and never cared for her. it was the japs who actually helped taiwan to industrialize by investing in the country.
everyone knows taiwan is a democratic, sovereign and independent nation. REPUBLIC OF TAIWAN R.O.T.!! SO SUCK IT, CHINA AND COMMIES AND GET OVER IT!!
wingdiluce the fact really bordered you, isn't it? nowadays, taiwan has nothing to offer, accept to kiss the mainlanders' tourists. Yes, your jealously, affect your pissy brain.
Very interesting series of video clips, but you seemed to have missed many other cities/areas of the insland, such as Tainan, etc. Anyway, interesting video. And yes, Taiwan is pretty much under-rated.
I'm from Taiwan myself and I say this travel series is excellent! Very well made. I'm going to share it with my friends both in US and Taiwan.
I don't live in Taiwan right now but in response to alanjen528, there are things I both dislike and like about it. Just the same as in US or anywhere in the world for that matter.
p.s. Every time I'm back to the US from visiting Taiwan, I always feel like arriving in a developing country, in terms of transportation infrastructure that is...
The transportation infrastructure in North America is in a need of an overhaul. And public transit, despite all the talk of environmentalism, borders on nonexistent. In that respect Taiwan is decades ahead, and most of East Asia has leapt ahead of the West.
haha, i love how you added the word "habitated" in your statement of taipei 101 being the tallest building in the world--the dubai tower is the tallest now, but it's not done yet :P
cheers to taiwan; I look forward to my plane touching down on your shores in 2010 ;)
Im from Taiwan, and I live in Chicago and Shanghai. I have to say, Taiwan is such a failure. I generally have 0 desire from ever going back to Taiwan again other than to visit some family members.
From the poor economy, politics, to the ignorance of the people. Terrible place to live in.
@alanjen528,wht you said is sad but true.Taiwan has its golden time during the 80's and 90's. But ever since the so called democratization started and the rise of DPP party, TW's economy has slipped....however, as a tourist destination, TW is under-rated. It's a beautiful island with well preserved Chinese culture.
I agree with Bushangels. It is underrated. You hardly ever meet a backpacker specifically traveling Taiwan, always either transiting through OR an expat working here. A lot of beauty.
Regarding the standards of life, to each their own. There is a lot of corruption and a lot of the infractructure needs work, but all in all I think the democratic process is working out much better for Taiwan than the other system across the strait is for the neighbours.
Good, now it's april, 2009, have you heard of the prisoning of the DPP leader/former "president" in Taiwan? He is better for Switzerland than for Taiwan, since he stored the money all there....What i want to say is, they are all the same. Political power is the monster...not the people or party who control it. Just like told in Lord of the Rings....
@classicleon, yes and no. By the constitution of ROC(who actually controls TW), Taiwan is in fact a province of China. But they are referring to Republic of China, not PRC or mainland...anyway, both sides claim Taiwan is a part of China, but with a different definition of 'CHINA'.
bushangels@, you might have to read my comments again. I have already said Taiwan is a province of Republic of China (ROC). I, by no mean claimed it's a part of PRC...I haven't even mentioned PRC. When and where did you see it from my comment? the only one who said this was you. Do you have problem in reading English?
Your videos are awesome! Keep up the excellent work! Would you mind telling me what editing software you use for these amusing clips? thank you! look forward for more!
eh... i have a question. How in the world did you manage to film the metro train in the front of the metro and how did you film from the top of the station looking down at the train while it was going into the station? Weren't you a private filmer? Or did you get permission to go ontop of the station?

2:32 Actually Taiwans claim is more dubious , because they claim the whole of mainland China ... wile never actually having control over it .
HK379 9 months ago
@HK379 It's true, and indeed it was a retarded claim, but they did move away from that policy in the 1990's. Very quietly.
monkeetime 9 months ago
@HK379
That's the policy of KMT's government. Some people who escaped to Taiwan with KMT or Taiwanese who lived under KMT's education still believe it.
Most Taiwanese don't care about it nowadays.
Come on.. China, Tibet, and Mongolia all belong to Taiwan?
