PJ you have the best collection of the coolest doo-wop Ive ever heard. I have always liked doo-wop but you have really opened my eyes to some really obscure tunes. Now I am really hooked. I wish I could haved lived in those times. I was about 10 years late.
This is Great! Thank you so much for the wonderful upload! I love Doo-Wop Music so much! I run a production company that is throwing a huge Doo-Wop show down in South West Florida.
That song was released in 1960 during that time the Payola scandal, which was why it never took off back then without the help of Payola payments to the disc jockeys. It would of possibly did if Payola wasn't yet cracked down on. The litigation surrounding the scandal was which after, meant the demise of a lot of R&B and doowop music by 1961, which then became replaced by Motown soul music and a secondary revival of doowop 60's style which sounded a lot different than the more typical 50's kind.
Virtually all of the guys in these groups made little or no money from their music. They sang because they enjoyed with some prospect of fame--alas very few achieved it. I used to get a doo wop catalog from New Jersey that had a notedposted in all the issues saying that, if you sang with one of these groups, you may have royalties coming--please get in touch. I think that shows commitment to the music and not to the money. Can you imagine ANY rap or hip hop groups leaving ANY doing that?
I know what you mean. Most of the groups didn't get much if anything. Out of the 30,000+ known doo wop releases, less than 300 were major national hits. In the case of The Tifanos, I don't think enough copies even sold for the owner of the label to give them some cash after he paid studio and pressing expenses. I remember talking to the lead of The Ocapellos who told me they were given a steak dinner for recording The Stars.
woooow romantic wish I was 16 and in love
