Just two greats champions. McEnroe has one of the best wirsts i have ver seen. But Lendl was better in mental control. Evenmore was always a gentleman and McEnroe sometimes "the fool" and sometimes "the beast".
one of the greatest matches i've ever seen in June 84, i was up until 4 in the morning, mcenroe lost this match, he should have won it in straight set but his shitty temper and attitude got the better of him. Still he was the ultimate player in 84.
McEnroe says in his book that this match was the one he still has nightmares about...he still finds it hard to go back to Paris as it makes him feel sick even now. Even if you didn't like Lendl's style, you have to admire his guts, determination not to give up and intelligence to change his game plan when two sets and a break down in the third. A fantastic sportsman.
@Zorg2006 Actually Lendl was down by two sets and a break in the FOURTH set (2:4) and not in the third. I know you can read everywhere and hear everybody saying he was a break down in the 3rd, but believe me, I have watched this match on tape several times and it really was the fourth set...
@Zorg2006 yes i remember this well, mcenroe was up 4-2 in the 3rd set30-15 or something like that and lost everything from there, lendle fought briliantly. However Mcenroe kicked Lendls ass badly in the us open that year, he made lendle look like a ladies mid week player, like shit.
No objection, except from the fact that I did not see him possessing something more than McEnroe, except perhaps from better luck, even in the championship point! Absolute lack of imagination, he certainly couldn't contribute equally to the spectation overall...

all credit to lendl for hanging in there. commentator said mcenroe first serve percentage had rapidly declined in the last 3 sets.
