Man that cover art is possibly one of the best I've seen. Only have the album (my 1st, only got into him a little later on), so it makes me want to get this single sometime! But what is that creature? I once thought it was a mouse, but that's just in the ears really. I guess it's probably a dog.
For anybody interested, the drum loop he's using in this is called the Amen Break. It's a very famous break, and has been used in loads of things. in fact, there's a great 18 minute video on youtube about it, just search for Amen Break
Squarepusher used a sampler to cut it up and rearrange into the madness you hear in this track. <3 breakbeat
@Ixaglet and suddenly everyones an expert... the amen break is an example of one break used in alot of jungle and early drum and bass, even in early rave (1991!). the only genre that you can say uses amens really is jungle, since the style is nearly formed around that particular loop. i would say 95% of drum and bass, including the old stuff doesn't use it.
was it one of the more prolific breaks? yes, certainly. but it's been way overhyped by that dude's video.
Squarepusher has never used Reason. Prior to 2000 he used an Akai S950 and an Akai S6000. Hardware samplers. After 2000 and ever since he has used Native Instruments Reaktor.
@SkullphuX reason didn't even exist when he made this record. reason came out in 2000 and this song is from the mid 90's. he used hardware for all of it and still sequences with hardware sequencers.. yamaha QY-70 and qy-700 and before that he did a lot with alesis MMT-8's which is insane. you kids need to learn how things were done back in the day. it was a lot more work.
@dayjob I really don't care how he made it. The drum beat he used in this sounds exactly like a drum loop you can use in reason. Don't hate! I'm not some kind of "Squarepusher" researcher that knows every detail of his life.
@SkullphuX - it's not hating. i'm just pointing out the obvious to anyone who knows how to use google. also, what you should have said is the drum beat in reasons sounds like it was ripped off from a squarepusher song since as said the song existed long before reason. just sayin.. not hatin.
how the fuck did he make this on a hardware sampler? absolutely insane drum programming, just made the amen his bitch really

how the fuck did they make music using those samplers?
kinglynx 9 months ago
@kinglynx I know right? Couldn't believe he sequenced all that on a drum machine. He also used a reel-to-reel tape recorder.

And Squarepusher is not late 80's early 90's. He has been active and since around 1995. His newest album came out in 2010.

@FemaCampEscapee Don't forget that tape-reel setup he had in the Dutch interview ;) shit was seriously cool

Reason 4? How about classic digital samplers. None of this was done on a computer, squarepusher is like, late 80's early 90's.

This comment has received too many negative votes show

@dayjob also forgot he used the boss dr-660 for sequencing quite a bit and the roland xox stuff here and there.

@dayjob you're totally right. I'm not much of a Squarepusher listener although I do like a few of his songs.
