  • very very compliments

  • Great!

  • What are you haters smoking? Miller and Jaco were friends. Jaco often used unconventional techniques, like slapping with his palm. Stop perpetuating the myth that he was pompous orthodox ass just because he didn't play slap funk grooves himself.

  • good version. The slapping adds a very unique angle. But really, anyone wanting to be true to the original form of Teen Town should use finger-pluck technique as Jaco did. Also, a fretless bass doesn't hurt. Obviously, this is a more "fun" take on it and credits a listen for that reason.

  • And I think I've realized why Jaco never slapped. When it dawned on me, I felt like a fucking idiot for not having thought about it before. He injured his wrist playing football at age 13. The damage to his wrist was severe enough to warrant corrective surgery and ultimately inhibited his ability to play drums(from Wikipedia). I don't know if it was his right-hand, but if it was: Of course he couldn't fucking slap. You need your wrist intact to do that.

  • @jagheterzack its true. i believe he talks about it in his modern electric bass video series

  • @arisetheband He does, but he doesn't mention slapping.

  • I don't get all this argument... I mean, Jaco didn't like slapping, but no one could touch him on finger-style playing. But what's wrong with slapping Teen Town? It's just different styles of play, no big deal. They're all musical.

  • @taufoofar to each his own, though, everone has their own style and different ways of expressing it,.unfortunately, like most things in this life, hype spoils many things, on bass its badd that most folks judge a by how ell someone slaps,or when thinking of a bass it has to be slapping,.jaco had his right to say he didnt like to slap bass,.i dont either,.

  • que loquera mas bacana

  • hey its all good - Jaco didn't need to slap; he was that good at plucking and all those sweet harmonics. Marcus is f'ing awesome at the slappage; that's his cup of tea - just enjoy both at what they're respectively good at...

  • @Mr5stringBob You said it best - we all have our favorites I love Jaco, Marcus and Victor - my personal preference - Mr. Wooten but that is just that -my personal favorite - doesn't detract from any of the others!

  • whether he liked slappin or not, Jaco would have loved this recording me thinks....

  • @CribNotes Jaco being impressed with Marcus Miller would be like us being impressed by the philosphical teachings of a newborn.

  • @Virtuosic1 You seriously underestimate what younglings can offer.

  • @ruinawish ... especially if they´re hookers.

  • You say it as if newborns have no impressive philosophical teachings.

  • @Virtuosic1 Face it, Jaco couldn't slap. That is fine. It doesn't make him less of a virtuoso, but it is a fact. Anyway why argue this point when we should be listening, right?

  • Jaco's wife, Ingrid, told me personally that Jaco wanted Marcus to show him some slap stuff, but got frustrated with it and ended up showing Marcus some exercises...Jaco was the man, but sometimes its easier to act like you don't WANT to do something when the fact is, you can't....I'm sure had Jaco worked on it, he could have mastered slapping like he did everything else, but he didn't have too.

  • @DirkonBass Yep... it's called sour grapes!

  • with what has been said about this version everyone is entitled to there opinion but when i here this i forget about everything and cant stop bopping my head cause its a killer tune all in all enjoy .

  • I don't get the guys saying "Jaco would be pissed, he hated slapping". Jaco was the best of all time, his songs are wonderful and it was pretty cool that he never slapped. But part from his musicmanship, Jaco wasn't always the nicest, or the brightest, person in the world. I'll always think he's wrong about slapping. Saying it the youtube-way: Jacos opinion on slapping was fucking stupid and he was a prick.

  • Slapping and popping were vastly different in Jaco's day. S & P was used to add intensity and accent to the bass player and drummer's pocket of propulsion. bass player's held down the foundation with the drummer's kick and popped tastefully. The way snapping and slapping has evolved, a second bas player is now needed for an ensemble to have any type of bottom end propulsion so necessary to R&B/funk as bassists like MM play in guitar register and are nthng more than soloists, never accompaniasts.

  • eric Dolphy had an ensemble with two bassists in the early 60s. Two of the best. Ron Carter and George Duvivier. 4 pieces, no "chord" instruments, just bass, bass (or cello), drums, and Dolphy (later Byard was added on Piano). Carter played mostly cello and in a similar solist's role as MM plays. Duvivier was the bottom end of that group on upright. MM should always use a bass player on stage with him to do what he doesn't in the least.

  • correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't Jaco slap the hell out of his bass on 'around the corner' with herbie Hancock (off the Mr Hands album)

  • @ColonelForkEyes I think it's alphonse mouzon on bass on that track

  • @jagheterzack Jaco didn't slap because he couldn't. i read in an article a while a back that he had been trying to learn how to slap from marcus himself.

  • @jagheterzack Many great players say stupid things...John Abercrombie said modes are not important and he thinks more on chord tones. The only thing is modes and chords are the same thing expressed in a diferent way.

  • @jagheterzack You're retarded. You say "he's wrong about slapping", lol, please, tell us his opinion on slapping. And please back it up with some sort of source. He never said anything negative about slap bass, he just never played it; you're the ignorant prick here.

  • @trapfman That he did not, but since he never played one may assumed he did not like it, wich I find stupid. And as you may have noticed, that comment is two years old. He probably never slapped because he broke his wrist as a kid, wich made him pick up bass instead of drums, so if it was his right wrist that should be the reason.

  • @jagheterzack Keep your uninteresting opinion for yourself. To assume he 'did not like it' because he didn't play it is retarded. Why the fuck would one want to play slap when they play fingerstyle like Jaco did? It doesn't matter how old your comment is, the retardedness is timeless considering Jaco died more than 20 yrs ago. You start talking about his wrist now, but you still call it stupid. You're ignorant, my sir, and retarded. Good day.

  • @trapfman Well, I don't see the retarded part, put if you are indeed right and I am retarded, that wouldn't be weird at all. as you can see below there was a lot of fucking stupid comments about that Jaco would be pissed if he heard this, and my point was that if he'd been pissed, he would have been an idiot since miller and wooten did this because they love him, wich I stand by. I still think my original comment is correct; he often acted the prick, and I think he's wrong about slapping.

  • @jagheterzack "You think he's wrong about slapping", please, do yourself a favor and go fuck your disgusting mother, you ignorant piece of donkeyshit. He NEVER made any statements about slapping; it's in your head. If you still don't get it and think you can form Jaco's opinion by interpreting shit your own retarded way, then that's fine. You're just a guy who tells his friends he listens to jazz because you think it makes u interesting. You're no music fan, you're a retard indeed.

  • @trapfman But then again, I never said he stated anything about his opinion on slapping, just that IF he didn't like it and "would have been pissed" over this version, he would have been stupid - and I stick to that, just like I stick to that he was known to act the prick quite often because of drug use and mental health. And I happen too see it the other way around; If you can't question your idols, then you're just a blind tool who does not like music - as you put it, a retard.

  • Nice tribute to Jaco by MM and VW!!! Nasty, stankin', funky FUNK, baby!!!!

  • what album?

  • k well there is a track with jaco and weather report being covered by miller on teen town. i like that one the same as the original. and it is not wictor.... or woteen.... man, who posted this?

  • :) Jaco would be pissed. He despised slapping, thought it sounded just like what a bass shouldn't sound like. Pretty sweet though.

  • was this documented or something?? Cause I wouldn't think Jaco would be opposed to any sound that came from a bass??? just opinion...he use to beat/slap/kick the crappola out of his bass? Just an opinion though.

  • Jaco Pastorious composed this song...but this is MM and Vic. Wootens' arrangement...

  • And wouldn't it be awesome if SMV and Jaco could play this together

  • Listen carefully, you can hear MM playing chops and lead voicings too.

  • That's a Tobias at the beginning. Neither of those guys play a Tobias

  • Oh my, great version, both grat interpretations, but to be sincere y prefeer jaco original version with weather report

  • the 2 best bassists ever

  • You really don't know who wrote this, right?

  • ya, jaco pastorious right? if not him then miller

  • But indeed the one slapping this whole piece is Marcus Miller.... see Scoop for example, he revolutionized the whole slapping technique...

  • Okay, I think you need to give just a little credit to flea, as he inspired his own following and did help the slapping community quite a bit. Not to mention Larry Graham...

  • Of course Larry Graham, as he did introduce the technique to the electric bass! PIONEER!

  • If you really like slap, check out Mark King of Level 42 playing Mr. Pink... AWESOME!!!!!!

  • Hey, Romans...

Victor Wooten is a bassist with a very special tecnique of slap.

Please, see "You Can't Hold No Groove"

And these version of the masterpiece teen town is great!

    Thanks for the video ^^

  • "very special technique of slap"-called thumping just a little comment

  • Me and My bass guitar is nice too!

  • i hate to say i agree... but i do.

    weather report is divine.

  • you fucking idiot, these are two of the best bassist in the world and you criticize the slapping used in the groove!? you evidently are not a coherent person by no means at all.

  • Cara, na minha opnião, são os melhores Bass Mans of World!

God Bless Yous Mans. MM² And Victor Wo²ten!

    Tilly - Bass Levita Br.
