  • Hi, I own the vsr880. I want to put a SD card in it. However the one I have is not working and I want to troubleshoot by first replacing the hdd with another hdd. Did you have to do anything to the hdd before you put it in? Or once you put it in then all you need to do is format? Thank.

  • @IanCanefire

The VS880 will format the drive once it is installed. Remember to keep the maximum size around 4 gig. I've heard that drives over 8-10 gig can cause the 880 to become unstable, so I'd recommend staying as close to 4-6 as possible. Also remember that the VS/VSR 880 will only use a max od 4 gig, so anything larger will be left unused.

PS: The SD adapter I put in mine is still working flawlessly.

  • what do i type in on ebay to find a hard drive

  • @billycat1965

Try typing in (VS880 Hard Drive) or (hard drive VS880). Either of these should get you close to what you are looking for.

Sad to say, these small cacpacity hard drives are getting harder to find these days. But there are still some out there.

  • Where can I get a hard drive that I know will work?

  • @lifeontheverge

The hard drives that I have were all found on E-Bay. It is getting harder to find these small capacity HD's, but they are still out there. It is a standard IDE notebook type (2½") drive. Must be IDE and not SATA.

Look for something between 2-6Gig's. Remember that the VS880 will only use 4Gig of the drive, so anything larger is not really practical.

  • @rickbell7 Hi Does it have to be small capacity for it to work? I dont think I cand find a small capacity disc but I probably can find standard IDE notebook type HD's, I dont really care if I waste some GBs. Thanks!

  • @lalomania1

I'd try to stay with a drive under 10 Gig's. I have read in some forums that the VS880 could become unstable if too large a drive is used. Sadly, it is becoming more difficult to find these small capacity drives. That's another reason I recently converted my VS880 to use standard SD cards as a hard drive. Works well and is silent.

  • @rickbell7 or anyone with an answer. Can this machine be interfaced with a PC and used as a controller or soundcard?

  • @shespeakstroof

Sorry to say that the VS880 can not interface with a PC. They "speak" totally different languages. In fact, it is quite a task just to import tracks from the 880 into the PC.

Wish I had a better answer for you.

  • @rickbell7 this is funny. Rick, thanks for being kind enough to respond but I don't know who hijacked my name. I never posted that question. This is wild. I'm going to have to change my name. This is too much like weird. (staring and occasionally blinking).

  • I use SPDIF as the interface to use the AD converters of the VS880 to bypass the computer soundcard

  • Dang you do everything.

  • @dano465

Well, I do try to keep costs down by doing most of my own work. Plus, I love anything technical anyway.

This is an upgrade that I have been needing to do literally for years. Glad I finally got round to it.:)

    Rick

  • 1.5 gigs? I can't even remember that far back. Though I do admit to still having the first 210 MB WD drive I hooked up to my 386. And it still works. LOL

Were I you, I would've gone for a terabyte with this upgrade. It'd give you plenty of headroom for at least 6 months or so.

  • @anmoose

I know! Even my "smallest" computer now has more than 1.5GB of RAM alone!

I could find adaptors and cables, etc and put a TB or two on thet VS880. Problem is, the firmware will only recognize 4Gig of it...no matter what size drive I install. This is hardwired in the PROMs in the machine.

I have been intrigued by some of the card adaptors out there. Thinking about trying that one day. Much easier to swap out a card than a HD. Makes archiving a breeze too!

  • all of these are all greek to me! wow, seems hard to own things like that, i'd need a PhD!

  • @ShaneFoxX

LOL @PhD... It really isn't so difficult. Jjust remember that essentially the VS880 is actually a simple computer inside. The HD is simply a storage device for it. I think you could handle this operation.

    Cheers!

    Rick

  • well done man lol

  • @Liquadia

A MUCH needed upgrade. But not to worry. It won't take long for me to fill this one too, LOL.

    Rick

  • Yes, hard drive space - tell me about it! My very first computer, which was a used Apple "pizza box", had a hard drive of a whopping 120 MB. Yes, Mega~, not Giga~. Of course, this was some 100 years ago, haha.

My current PC had a 160GB hard drive, and, due to loads of music CDs and many video recordings for YouTube, all of a sudden, it was filled up, with just 500 MB free space left. I'll get a 500GB drive soon, along with 4 times the RAM I now have. But these will fill up soon enough, too!

  • @Truedantalion

OMG! I so much remember those days! I'll never forget the pride I took in bragging about the Humongus 540 MEG HD that I put in my DX4/100mhz system...with a whopping 8meg of ram! Gosh, I 'd NEVER fill a drive THAT big! LOLOLOLOL.

Strangely, this VS880 has about 20 times the actual computing power of that old PC. All dedicated to music and audio production. Unfortunately, 4Gig is the max HD space this unit can use. But that is still huge compared to what it had.

    Rick

  • LOL, nice operation RB, you should be a surgeon!! Hey why have you not been to check out my latest song, huh huh huh?? I have a coffee (tea) waiting you know, and its getting cold :o)

Cool vid buddy - well done and congrats for upgrading!

  • @trulykiwi

Yes, ythe operation was a big success! Next video will show the initialization process. A long needed upgrade, as you well know.

I have seen your new vid...only YT wouldn't let me comment.:( I'll be straight over to try again. All the support you have given me over time, this is the least I can do.

    Cheers!

    Rick

  • @rickbell7 Yeah I know the upgrade was overdue, and well deserved :o)

Oh you have already been there, well okay I guess you didn't want your drink then, LOL. No prob about the comment buddy, just thought you may like to see an old dog try some new tricks, hahaha.

  • @trulykiwi

Ohh, THAT's what I forgot. I must have been in a hurry or something. I usually never turn down a free tea or java, LOL.

Yes, the comments are spotty at best for me. Also, my subscription box is currently buggared, so I don't see any new vid's in there like I used to.:(

Yah, gotta love YT and their constant "upgrading(?)"....

    Off to work now....again...

    Later, my friend.

    Rick

  • Somewhere somebody said Sandisk cards don't work. This is wrong. Depending on the converter card you buy, read the speeds it can handle which is the most important factor.

I just popped mine in, works at 30mbit per second all 4 tracks recording fine which is the max on a sandisk. The controller is 40mbits per second but the card is 30. THIS MAKES ME SO HAPPY! I'll get another one soon for a 124 track machine LOOOOooooOOOOOL!
