I have always found it a little disturbing that amish people consider bicycles fundamentally different from pocket watches. At what number of gears or springs does an object go from being a tool to being a sinful luxury.
@meinefresse94 sorry, i don't live close to this thing at all, you'll just have to squint :O
from what I remember, the release was just two bent metal rods that were attached to the wooden balance beam—the one that catches the marbles as they fall—one attached to each side of the nail you see. the beam pushes each rod up just enough that it lets the next marble though (and stops the next one).
seriously though, marbles are glass, and glass-blowing is really old technology. i wouldn't be surprised if that was one of the things the amish were allowed to use
when I was a kid, I got this kit that came with some wooden chutes and marbles and stuff so that you could make setups like this. They were like blocks though, so I got to put it together myself, and build it any which way I pleased. That was pretty fun. This looks like it would get tiresome after a while because it's the same all the time. I guess it depends on the age group. They make toddler toys like this, and little kids love them.
I agree with your comments, dragfyre. The modern world has truly taken the imagination out of kids. I think this is a cool toy, and I'd love to see some kids nowadays using their minds to build this thing. Too bad there's so much computer-related nonsense in the world. I feel sorry for the human race if we can't appreciate something like this creation.
I agree, but I still think this toy/game sucks. for it to be fun, it would require kids to build it, or to build other new, exciting things out of the same simple wooden pieces. A kid who likes this is probably going to be either really young or really bored.
I'm sorry but I would have to disagree, if you're deep into computers such as I am, there's 'engineering' challenges you face just like in the 'real world'. You have to think of creative ways to go around problems, or solve them with programming.
Kids that are used to watching house of TV and playing video games would be bored but kids from a different culture may not be bored with a toy like this.
This is amazing in that the Amish typically don't use power tools. In fact they don't even use metal nails. They make nails out of wood.
Television sucks the imagination out of us, doesn't it? It's the sheer mass of entertainment available to us in the West. Kids all over the world would be fascinated with a toy like this because their entertainment options are more limited, and hey, there just aren't many toys that are as cool as this. Depending on their age, they could spend hours or days having fun with it. Not so when we can go to a store and have anything we want. But does that truly make us happy?
i had something like that when i was a kid yet it was all out if plastic

I mean, it's ok, but I wouldn't call it amazing. I'd be proud of it if I made it, but other than that I don't think it's anything spectacular.
