Change is what Americans expected and wanted. Look at the wide difference between the 1954 Chevy and the 1955. They made you feel like you made a big mistake when you bought the 54. Today cars all look the same...basically. It's not about looks, it's about technology. In the 50s, it was "Dyna-flo", "Fluid Drive" , "Cushion Air Suspension" and "Rocket 88"..all terms that meant absolutely nothing when it came to technology but everything when it came to a guillable public.
@GTech006 not if you look at the changes they did from year to year. You would buy a 55 chevy and the 56's the following year would look diff. then a year later the 57's would look diff then the 56's.
this the era the pissed a lot of people off when they bought a car, because it would already be outdated by next year since car companies changed the styling every single year just about.
The car was hideous. Came in colors such as lilac and eggplant. It looked so sad from the front. It's style was more early 50's than the roaring hot late 50's cars - Plymouth, Chevy and Ford. I suppose the design was for older folks.
@TheLizardKing1967 Mesahigh's got a point--you look at the '57 Lincoln compared to the '56 (which was an award-winning design), and you wonder what the heck happened! We won't even talk about the '58-'60' models.
The '57s front end was re-worked from the goodlooking 1956 model. The modifications were made to install the quad headlights that were introduced in 1957 and installed on most cars by 1958. The '57s front-end was a bit of a mess!

Cars from the 1950's were things of beauty.
Nothing cheap about them.
All metal and great looking.
If Ford or Chevy or anyone ever decided to build a line of cars using those old designs, they would clean up.

My grandfather owned a yellow one with white interior. He sold it in 1971. Damm I wished he would have kept that car.
