There is a large population of north African origin in France directly as a result of the French colonial experience in the 19th Century. There are plenty of women from this population who do not wear the veil or burka by choice, just as there are those who do. French traditions are not so fragile. This law is a distraction.

Now if Burkas are legal then this can be exploited. In addition the argument is there that it is not the womens free choice at all. #1 They are brought up to believe Islam is the only true religion #2 if they do not veil themselves they dishonor the family and will bear repercussions. The law effects the full veil.
