I think it's education.
Poorly educated people do less well and don't have the intellect to escape religion.
The best educated societies tend to do better and become more enlightened (ie. less religious)
The worst societies stifle education to the point where fundamentalism is the only game in town - some US states fall into this category like Pakistan and Afghanistan and Sudan.
