Tony is without a doubt dead. If you watch the whole scene from the beggining its all in the view points and patern. Watch the scene.. The bell rings when someone walks in, tony looks up at the person walking in, then the next cut is Tony point of view. So Meadow comes in which triggers the door bell, Tony looks up to see and then Tonys Pov which is black because he is dead. "Never even hear it when it happens". Brilliant!!!!
I don't believe he dies. Whether he lives or dies is not even the point of the scene. LIke 46 degreesouth said, it is made so you can live through Tony's eyes, and understand that regardless of where he is, he ALWAYS has to be on guard. Even if NOTHING happened, the point is he always has to be prepared.
What I think is funny is the way people over-estimate the writers of the show, like they wanted people to speculate and study the final scene for a untold clue about the future -_-
People, if he was meant to be killed, he would have been in the series. All these theories about previous conversations and what not are rubbish.
It's an ending! It leaves the story open, because the Sopranos were never a story with an end and that's the genius of it.
@vogue4u The point to this ending is being overlooked by everyone. The guy walked into the bathroom was the nephew of a man tony had killed in an earlier episode. The two black men who walked into the diner were the same two men who shot tony and tried to kill him in an earlier episode. The man puring cream into his coffee was the truck driver tonys men beat up in an earlier episode. The man sitting with his family also got beat up by tonys family in an earlier episode.
@vogue4u Most important thing of all,is in an earlier episode tony was talking about how it must be like 2 die with a family member, and he said he thinks all one sees when he dies is black. Tony died, most likely his wife and son were also killed at the table because they were stuck in the middle of the gunfire.Meadows life was spared because she was late getting to the table after having problems parking her car.The man never came back out of the bathroom, the two black men killed him.
is it true when he talks to bobby he says death would be like cutting to black? earlier on in the show because thats what the last scene rendition would represent his version of what he thought dieing would be like

@mattdohertyy I don't think Tony was killed, but you're reasoning is flawed. They most certainly would kill Tony in front of his family. Do you not remember how Phil was killed right in front of his wife and grandchildren?
All these forced theories in the comment field just go to show that most people cannot stand ambiguous endings. What's your guys' obsession with closure? Tony may be dead, he may be alive - there is absolutely no way of telling what happened after the blackout because the show ENDS THERE. I was baffled over the ending until I realized: hey, nothing is truly resolved here, just like it rarely does in real life. Kudos to Chase for staying true to series' spirit to the very end.

there is no possible way that tony is dead. the whole tony is dead theory is a product of internet bullshit and forum fan fiction. it started with someone inventing that the guy is someone called nikki leotardo and that the black guys appeared already in an episode... chase denied that... chase later admitted that tony wasn't dead... but it's not enough.. so people came up with other bullshit. tony is very much alive.

@delpiero47 you people piss me the fuck off you go around saying "david chase said" when you have no fucking proof whatsoever if david chase "said" tony diddint or did die then where the fuck is this wonderful info located huh???
the point of the scene was expierencing a moment through his eyes, everyone that came through the door could have been someone trying to kill him so likely he would reach everytime there was a clang. Like most great art we're left to make our own assumption as to what has happened. Brilliant scene
Not necessarily. Whether or not they do a film has no bearing on whether or not Tony died. If they do a prequel, Tony could still be viewed as having died. If they decide to continue the story, they could very well take it in another direction, without Tony--although like most, I seriously doubt that would ever happen.
he was reaching for change to put in the jukebox thaat he was looking through. All this is is a clip of the final scene. if you have ever seen the last scene, you would have noticed. he looked up because someone came through the door, like it was happening the whole scene. lol I thought I would help out all the controversy about this 6 sec. clip.
Tony definitely dies. Chase is appalled that people would want to see Tony, the man millions have laughed and cried with for so long, have his brains splattered all over the table in front of his family. He dies for sure, as indicated by the extended blackout, and by the preceding events including the shooting of Silvio Dante and the death of Bobby Baccala. Chase wanted to portray Tony's death in perfect cinema, which he did, using a smooth blackout. You need to appreciate Chase's vision.
@punjsher i dont think he died, i agree with 46degreesouth for the rest of his life his going to wonder when someone is going to kill by not trusting no one
if you watch an earlier scene tony has the same face when the door opens and when reaching in his pocket for change for the juke box. he's neither dead nor alive since he's a fictional character and the writer didn't end anything.
He is deader than Anna Nicole Smith. The show is about Tony Soprano. No Tony Soprano, no show. We're cut off abruptly just as Tony's life is cut short in those final moments. The clues are there. Chase isn't an idiot.
hes not dead ok there just leaving the end hanging so the audience makes up there own ending of how it ends hes not dead they wouldnt kill him with his family there they just fucking with ur mind
You could be right but remember, tony had phill leatardo killed in front of his family so this may possibly be a retaliation from new york to kill tony in front of his family. dalebronson is right, the clues are there
ya true but i donno im just saying i dont think hes dead i think the writer just wants the audience to make up the endning so he left possible clues of death but my opion hes alive
Do you seriously think that? I mean, David Chase spent eight years and six seasons creating the world of Tony Soprano and two of those years thinking of a satisfying finale for the series. Would he really end his groundbreaking and critically acclaimed show with a you-get-to-decide-what-happens ending? This isn't a "Choose Your Own Adventure" book; it's The Sopranos. He's dead.
buddy there is no reason to kill of tony that was meadow walking in through the door what makes u think hes dead they just ended it him having dinner. and hes basiccly fucking with ppl minds so u think what u want of the ending but hes not dead there is no evidence in the show saying kill tony
HE certainly could be dead , i think the dave wanted it to be controversial that is what makes it so interesting... he would not have focused the last 3 minutes on things such as the guy in the members only jacket who went to the bathroom... or the black guys, or the trucker in the corner drinking coffee. Also if you think about when meadow was trying to park it took her 3 tries to do so, Tony has had his life attempted 2 times unsuccessfully. The third time. ( this time) was successful.
In David Chases's words...."It didnt matter if he died at that moment or later. The ending was to show what the future looks like for Tony & his family." Still didnt state Tony definately got whacked so you cannot say its a 100% that he got whacked but I wouldnt rule him getting whacked out.
He also reaches down to his pocket when the trucker comes in at the beginning of this scene. Its very clever and i was looking for other clues like if the guy even finished his coffee before going to the bathroom or if you see a gun..but the clues will never be so obvious..he did die though
i dont know if tony is dead but it does look like he was reaching for a gun or because as soon ass the door opened he took his arm off the top of the jukebox and quicly his arm went down near his waist
NO YOU FUCKIN IDIOTS! TONY DIES! NOTICE HOW EVERY TIME SOMEONE COMES IN HE LOOKS UP, THEN WHEN MEDOW COMES IN WE NOTICE HE REACHES FOR SOMETHING,ITS LIKE HE KNOWS SOMEONES OUT TO GET HIM . THEN WHEN HE SEES ITS MEDOW HE LETS HIS GUARD DOWN THEN BAM! SOMEONE SHOOTS HIM FROM THE SIDE. WE DO SEE THE SHOW THROUGH TONYS EYES AND WITH OUT HIM THERE IS NO SHOW.
Theres basically two ways this could have gone. The Goomba coming out from the bathroom just shot him in the head, and its Over. Remember him, and Bobby Baccala on the boat talking about it..(Bobby says.. you probably don't even hear the Gun going off)That is what could have been the case here, or scenario # 2... David Chase just ENDED it to black to leave the story OPEN for a SOPRANO Movie.
Sorry but if you think he's just seen meadow get killed you must be out of your fucking mind, look at his face. Does that look like the face of somebody who's about to see his daughter get murdered? And if the whole of the last scene was from Meadow's eyes, how do we see Tony before the door has opened? There's no "obviously reaching for his gun", it just looks like he puts his arm by his side. Speculation is fine but don't act as if this is proof of anything.
He's obviously reaching for his gun. Meadow gets killed. The final seconds of the show are through her eyes and the last thing she sees is Tony, then everything cuts black and goes silent...for her.
This is utter bullshit. Meadow doesnt get killed, its Tony. Look at the POV pattern. Its always the bell ringing then a close-up of Tony, and finally we get to see what Tony sees at the door. Except the last time, when we get to see nothing but a void. Thats a clear indication of death. And since a handgun bullit travels about 3 times as fast as the sound, he doesnt even hear the gun going off. Hes shot at close range in his head and is instantly dead.
The most evident thing is only one: Meadow doesn't enter in the pub (the last sound is the ring of the door). If it happens something, it happens to Meadow. Like to Michael Corleone, at the end of Godfather III.
About 2 minutes before the show ends, it shows one of the guys who wants Tony dead, his name escapes me, walk into the bathroom, which was right to the side of Tony. Tony always did say that his favorite scene from the Godfather was when the assasin went into the bathroom, got a gun, came out, and killed the guy sitting right outside of the bathroom...Coincidence?
It's no correct. The most favourite scene of Tony from the Godfather was when Vito Corleone returns to Sicily (he said this in season 2, episode 4 "Commendatori"). For me, if one is killed, this is Meadow
Correction, Tony's favorite scene from the Godfather was when the young Vito went back to Sicily to kill Don Ciccio, the don who killed his mother, father, and older brother Paolo!
That was the ending??? Seriously, i don't follow the sopranos, but if you guys thought that the ending was any great then you guys are definitely on something. Seriously, i want some of wat u guys are smoking.
are you sure i could have sworn i saw meadow in the first one too but then on other broadcasts of this episode it ends on his face, when they had the premiere the reporters kept saying stuff like how the last thing we saw was meadow
I think the insult to the fans was the lack of wackings in the whole episode. The only person to get killed was Phil Leotardo (though it was pretty funny when the car ran over his head)
If I remember correctly it looks like the very last shot(before the black anyways)is actually a close-up from an exact shot from earlier in the scene where he looks up when the door chimes and his face looks exactly the same and his hand goes down on the same side and everything...
I thought the ending was a little too unique. In my opinion theres absolutely no way to find out what really happend because with all his friends dying it is not at all strange for him to be suspisus, and that was not the first time he falsely reached for his gun when someone came into a room.
If he's looking up and it is the black guys then he's like looking up because the door rings and it's meadow , while the two assasins have their guns drawn right in front of her--imagine that scenario
From someone who has watched from the beginning...I thought the ending was brilliant and fitting. No one wanted to watch the guy get whacked and certainly not in front of his wife and kids. Chase has made a bunch of missteps in the show ala season 6 but it could not have ended any better.
I don't know about you guys, but I saw a different ending. I saw his daughter walk in, and THEN it when black, in fact, my TV shut off on it's own! When I turned it back on, it was black, then I saw the credits.
If David Chase was trying to be ambiguous in showing that Tony was killed, he didn't do a very good job. He looks up just as his daughter is coming in. If anything, it just shows that his life, if he survives another 20 years, will be looking over his shoulder every five seconds, which is a fate worse than death. It's not "all there" as Chase says. There may be hints he's placed, but it's not there in the final scene. Just Tony's paranoia.
Yes, the motion in the last scene with Tony's expression was him taking out a gun from his left hand. If you notice, before Meadow walks in Tony is about to change the song, but instantly, when he hears the door ring, his left hand looks as it is about to take out something.
r u kidding me lol? thats was the best endibg ever! u problay dont understand it.. no on really did.. if u want me to explain it to u just send me a message..i know because my cousion was chris's wife..=]
I appreciate it, but it was explained to me a hundred different times in a hundred different ways..it still sucked...the problem is I didnt want to have to "think" about it, I just want to be entertained...that ending was all about David Chase and not about the audience...sorry.
you know what- your just crying like a little girl b/c The Sopranos had the biggest balls on television; always did, and the finale just slapped those big balls across the audiences face...AND YOU CAN'T HANDLE IT! the show was genius. the show was brilliant; start to finish. and the audience that truly GOT the show LOVED the ending. david chase OWNS that show-
Sopranos isn't just to be entertained??!!?...then I really must be going crazy...If I had known I was in the middle of a Donnie Darko movie throughout all those seasons I might have reconsidered watching the show...(although Donnie Darko was GOOD)
You guys dont get it do u? David Chase was trying to pull ur tails, the 2 black guys that entered the restaurant were in there to kill that guy in the washroom!!!
He got whacked, one of the best scenes in tv history. A superb ending to a superb show.

The only reason why I think Tony may not have died is that there will be a Sopranos Film eventually. You can't do a Soprano's The Movie without Tony.
It could be a prequel though, or something leading up to the point where we went black on TV.

It's really simple. If they ever decide to do a big screen Sopranos film, then Tony didn't die. Otherwise, he did.
CAPNMRVL 2 years ago 4
Not necessarily. Whether or not they do a film has no bearing on whether or not Tony died. If they do a prequel, Tony could still be viewed as having died. If they decide to continue the story, they could very well take it in another direction, without Tony--although like most, I seriously doubt that would ever happen.

xdarkdaysx 3 years ago
he was reaching for change to put in the jukebox thaat he was looking through. All this is is a clip of the final scene. if you have ever seen the last scene, you would have noticed. he looked up because someone came through the door, like it was happening the whole scene. lol I thought I would help out all the controversy about this 6 sec. clip.

david chase got exactly what he wanted everyone making there own mind up about the ending and everyone talking about it even years after it finnished
skewbeef 3 years ago
looks like he was reaching for gun or something :)
legacyofboom 3 years ago
Tony definitely dies. Chase is appalled that people would want to see Tony, the man millions have laughed and cried with for so long, have his brains splattered all over the table in front of his family. He dies for sure, as indicated by the extended blackout, and by the preceding events including the shooting of Silvio Dante and the death of Bobby Baccala. Chase wanted to portray Tony's death in perfect cinema, which he did, using a smooth blackout. You need to appreciate Chase's vision.
punjsher 3 years ago 14
@punjsher i dont think he died, i agree with 46degreesouth for the rest of his life his going to wonder when someone is going to kill by not trusting no one

i actually think the ending was quite cool
adv1k 3 years ago 3
if you watch an earlier scene tony has the same face when the door opens and when reaching in his pocket for change for the juke box. he's neither dead nor alive since he's a fictional character and the writer didn't end anything.
guido419 3 years ago
don't stop.
ThisIsGonnaBeCool 3 years ago
He is deader than Anna Nicole Smith. The show is about Tony Soprano. No Tony Soprano, no show. We're cut off abruptly just as Tony's life is cut short in those final moments. The clues are there. Chase isn't an idiot.
dalebronson 3 years ago 3
hes not dead ok there just leaving the end hanging so the audience makes up there own ending of how it ends hes not dead they wouldnt kill him with his family there they just fucking with ur mind
italianjohnny123 3 years ago
You could be right but remember, tony had phill leatardo killed in front of his family so this may possibly be a retaliation from new york to kill tony in front of his family. dalebronson is right, the clues are there
blkjeep1 3 years ago 2
ya true but i donno im just saying i dont think hes dead i think the writer just wants the audience to make up the endning so he left possible clues of death but my opion hes alive
italianjohnny123 3 years ago
Do you seriously think that? I mean, David Chase spent eight years and six seasons creating the world of Tony Soprano and two of those years thinking of a satisfying finale for the series. Would he really end his groundbreaking and critically acclaimed show with a you-get-to-decide-what-happens ending? This isn't a "Choose Your Own Adventure" book; it's The Sopranos. He's dead.
dalebronson 3 years ago 3
buddy there is no reason to kill of tony that was meadow walking in through the door what makes u think hes dead they just ended it him having dinner. and hes basiccly fucking with ppl minds so u think what u want of the ending but hes not dead there is no evidence in the show saying kill tony
italianjohnny123 3 years ago
HE certainly could be dead , i think the dave wanted it to be controversial that is what makes it so interesting... he would not have focused the last 3 minutes on things such as the guy in the members only jacket who went to the bathroom... or the black guys, or the trucker in the corner drinking coffee. Also if you think about when meadow was trying to park it took her 3 tries to do so, Tony has had his life attempted 2 times unsuccessfully. The third time. ( this time) was successful.
smelkos 3 years ago
whats the evidence that he died?
italianjohnny123 3 years ago
In David Chases's words...."It didnt matter if he died at that moment or later. The ending was to show what the future looks like for Tony & his family." Still didnt state Tony definately got whacked so you cannot say its a 100% that he got whacked but I wouldnt rule him getting whacked out.
MrBungle5127 3 years ago
He also reaches down to his pocket when the trucker comes in at the beginning of this scene. Its very clever and i was looking for other clues like if the guy even finished his coffee before going to the bathroom or if you see a gun..but the clues will never be so obvious..he did die though
xplaybwoix 3 years ago
i dont know if tony is dead but it does look like he was reaching for a gun or because as soon ass the door opened he took his arm off the top of the jukebox and quicly his arm went down near his waist
joshua6683 3 years ago
Tony is alive. He was just reaching in his pocket for a coin
realitycheckiceb93 3 years ago

69u78 3 years ago
Theres basically two ways this could have gone. The Goomba coming out from the bathroom just shot him in the head, and its Over. Remember him, and Bobby Baccala on the boat talking about it..(Bobby says.. you probably don't even hear the Gun going off)That is what could have been the case here, or scenario # 2... David Chase just ENDED it to black to leave the story OPEN for a SOPRANO Movie.

wiley207 3 years ago 5
Sorry but if you think he's just seen meadow get killed you must be out of your fucking mind, look at his face. Does that look like the face of somebody who's about to see his daughter get murdered? And if the whole of the last scene was from Meadow's eyes, how do we see Tony before the door has opened? There's no "obviously reaching for his gun", it just looks like he puts his arm by his side. Speculation is fine but don't act as if this is proof of anything.

Tony would scream even more louder than Michael Corleone if Meadow dies

and to add to my last comment, keep in mind the advice AJ quotes from Tony to remember the good times. Almost prefacing his sister's death.
coltrane8787 4 years ago
He's obviously reaching for his gun. Meadow gets killed. The final seconds of the show are through her eyes and the last thing she sees is Tony, then everything cuts black and goes silent...for her.
coltrane8787 4 years ago 2
good explaination
NorwegianDirector 3 years ago
This is utter bullshit. Meadow doesnt get killed, its Tony. Look at the POV pattern. Its always the bell ringing then a close-up of Tony, and finally we get to see what Tony sees at the door. Except the last time, when we get to see nothing but a void. Thats a clear indication of death. And since a handgun bullit travels about 3 times as fast as the sound, he doesnt even hear the gun going off. Hes shot at close range in his head and is instantly dead.
mandrke2004 3 years ago 4
The most evident thing is only one: Meadow doesn't enter in the pub (the last sound is the ring of the door). If it happens something, it happens to Meadow. Like to Michael Corleone, at the end of Godfather III.

NIKKI LEOTARDO! THAT'S HIS NAME!
blackparadeleader15 4 years ago
About 2 minutes before the show ends, it shows one of the guys who wants Tony dead, his name escapes me, walk into the bathroom, which was right to the side of Tony. Tony always did say that his favorite scene from the Godfather was when the assasin went into the bathroom, got a gun, came out, and killed the guy sitting right outside of the bathroom...Coincidence?
blackparadeleader15 4 years ago
It's no correct. The most favourite scene of Tony from the Godfather was when Vito Corleone returns to Sicily (he said this in season 2, episode 4 "Commendatori"). For me, if one is killed, this is Meadow
mfrancy67 4 years ago
Correction, Tony's favorite scene from the Godfather was when the young Vito went back to Sicily to kill Don Ciccio, the don who killed his mother, father, and older brother Paolo!
soprano35 3 years ago
There wouldn't be a bang. A bullet travels faster than sound. Tony would be dead before he heard anything...

I think the insult to the fans was the lack of wackings in the whole episode. The only person to get killed was Phil Leotardo (though it was pretty funny when the car ran over his head)
frankovich213 4 years ago
If I remember correctly it looks like the very last shot(before the black anyways)is actually a close-up from an exact shot from earlier in the scene where he looks up when the door chimes and his face looks exactly the same and his hand goes down on the same side and everything...
itstimeformyshot 4 years ago
I thought the ending was a little too unique. In my opinion theres absolutely no way to find out what really happend because with all his friends dying it is not at all strange for him to be suspisus, and that was not the first time he falsely reached for his gun when someone came into a room.
beggo321 4 years ago
If he's looking up and it is the black guys then he's like looking up because the door rings and it's meadow , while the two assasins have their guns drawn right in front of her--imagine that scenario

From someone who has watched from the beginning...I thought the ending was brilliant and fitting. No one wanted to watch the guy get whacked and certainly not in front of his wife and kids. Chase has made a bunch of missteps in the show ala season 6 but it could not have ended any better.

Or maybe he is just taking out a quarter to play a new song since the "Don't stop" one was about to end, as simultaniously Meadow walked in.
crapObear2323 4 years ago
I don't know about you guys, but I saw a different ending. I saw his daughter walk in, and THEN it when black, in fact, my TV shut off on it's own! When I turned it back on, it was black, then I saw the credits.
ddamaged1 4 years ago
If David Chase was trying to be ambiguous in showing that Tony was killed, he didn't do a very good job. He looks up just as his daughter is coming in. If anything, it just shows that his life, if he survives another 20 years, will be looking over his shoulder every five seconds, which is a fate worse than death. It's not "all there" as Chase says. There may be hints he's placed, but it's not there in the final scene. Just Tony's paranoia.

"bro he is reaching for his gat"
Yes, the motion in the last scene with Tony's expression was him taking out a gun from his left hand. If you notice, before Meadow walks in Tony is about to change the song, but instantly, when he hears the door ring, his left hand looks as it is about to take out something.
