If you are interested in DC motor controling, for high currents (a Car or a Bike) you should learn more about the IGBT transistors. Those are modern transistors developed specialy for this purpose. Keep on rollin!

Good on you Ben. Im currently making the same thing. Im building a PWM circuit using a 555 timer chip in the hopes of being able to drive a 600A IGBT to control my electric motor in my electric car. Im hoping to find a less expensive version of commercial EV motor controller. Keep us posted on how you go. :)
Do a web search for "Open ReVolt" motor controller. It's a motor controller anyone can build, with specs similar to a Curtis 1231, but far less expensive to build yourself.
