@Scoonertuna Don't talk shit! He was talking about the computers at the time. Computer Animator's are in full control of the character's and their enviroments in the computer. In fact his book The Animator's Survival Kit is for all forms of animator's including classical 2d, computer, games, stop motion and game animators. So don't try to diminish computer animators by talking about something that you know nothing about.
An animator who produced a film with Disney Standard at his home, starting in the 50s and brought several generations of animators for the project.
Without the help of computers or a big budget.
The project could have been more interesting if it were a continuous series bringing together talented animators beginners & veterans gathering in short episodes to the current days.
I love his comment on the "artistic wank" hahaha. Because thats the main thing that stopped me from becoming a traditional artist. I couldnt stand the pretentiousness
There is a scene in the Princess and the Frog where the evil shadow man does a card trick of his own. I knew exactly where the animaters took that idea from.
Pixar keeps the core tradition of animation alive Wall E, up and the incredibles were major blockbusters but the reason is because of the story, and the passion people put into it. sure they make sequals and money grabbers but those movies are a great place for experimentation and harvesting new talent.
Pixar manages to make movies successful financially and artistically.
But to dovetail off what Dick Williams said I recommend folks to listen to the last part Ken Duncan's interview at the Animation Podcast....he at least has a more "current" pespective on the whole thing.
I guess you´re right. I don´t perticulary fancy computer animation usually. But a pencil has as much soul as an computer. It´s that people who should put their soul in it.
From a fully Blockbuster film vision to a butchered cereal box film. What a fucking insult to this great man's talent!

I used to live by Dick, and knew his son very well. They now live in England as their son goes to a grammar school!

pixar is still an artistic wank. none of the animators at pixar can put a bead on what ken harris and his ilk do.

It's still very much the animator doing the animation. I think Richard would agree that in todays examples the computer is just a tool.

maybe he's thinking different now...with all 3d and stuff..

Sure, but compare his version from "A Christmas Carol" with the Jim Carrey motion perfomance capture 3D from Robert Zemeckis now.
Richard Williams version is much better in my opinion.
