The United States is not a direct democracy, so "lets get real for a second" and see what this bill is actually about. This amendment was put up because of the fear that our current gay marriage law may be overturned by the N.C. court system because it promotes discrimination and not equality. We want North Carolina to have laws competitive to other states and creates a good business climate for the next generation (who do support gay marriage, don't beleive me? Look at some college polls).

Yes, Senator Newton, what you are promoting is akin to racial bigotry, and you and your fellow bigots will go down in history in disgrace right along with the bigots that tried to protect slavery and segregation.
