I recently heard a comment in regard to the closing of a locally owned business (owned by kanaka maoli), "What do you get when you have three Hawaiians together? Dissension." The comment was made by another Hawaiian sick of the inability of Hawaiians to come to agreement.
I don't think that there are so many that do not support the heart of the Akaka Bill, just that the non-supporters speak very loudly.
As someone who wants to learn more about the bill, it's hard to do so with most of the talk here in Hawai'i being negative towards the bill. It seems like those who support this bil are the vast minority. I honestly don't think that Sen. Akaka would steer the Hawaiians wrong. But with great non-Hawaiian opposition to the bill and disagreements within Hawaiians, it seems bad for this bill. I feel if this bill doesn't pass, Hawaiians will lose everything they want to preserve.
