  • Give Jarri Kurri, Esa Tikkanen, Mark Messier as linemates to Lemieux, and those records would be different.

  • Gretzky was top 5 in the art ross race in 2 of his final 3 seasons. At age 37 thats impressive.

  • If someone breaks Gretzky's record, Gretzky will come out of retirement and reclaim it.

  • Guys, im not gunna lie, wayne is amazing. But Bobby Orr is so much better.

  • Lemieux was better

  • @GerardKnight7 if Lemieux was better it would be him breaking Howe's record

  • The greatest thats for sure. And by the way, that goal tied the game. Guess who scored the winning goal in overtime? Yep, The Great One.

  • simply the best

  • I love how he got that goal in Edmonton, in his first year with the Kings, against his old team.

If I had to list my top 10 favorite goals of all time, this would rank #7!

  • At about 0:50 Jari Kurri was screaming in his mind watch it fools, Wayne is coming from behind the net as usual... too far away to get to it himself...

  • Beautiful.

  • Ah man and against the Oilers lol D:

  • sooooo much irony scoring that against the oilers

  • Bob Miller with an epic call. He is the best ever.

  • Why did they leave Gretzky alone in front of the net?! Especially when he's 1 point away from breaking a record and playing against the Oilers.

  • And he did it against the team that traded him...

  • @bpm1313 they didnt trade him. Gretzky became a free agent and LA Kings offered more money

  • @luf4rall Oilers traded Gretzky, McSorley and Krushelnyski, to the Kings for Jimmy Carson, Martin Gelinas, $15 million, and the Kings first round draft picks in 1989. Sather wanted Robitille but got Carson insted.

  • @luf4rall DO YOUR HOMEWORK U RETARD!!! GRETZKY A FREE AGENT,FUCK U R DUMB!

  • @The10ranger10 srry misread the article. But he did agree to the trade in the end

  • @luf4rall fair enough, sorry for yelling, lol. He accepted it in the end although he had no choice.Pocklington had him locked into a 20 yr contract, which was just brutaly ridiculous. In the end it was the best thing for him cuz he started getting paid like he should have been, pocklington was just fucking him over! taking LA to a sold out house every nite gave him the exposure and endorsements to really line his pockets. peace out!

  • i've never seen this in my life , spectators from a home team going crazy like this for a goal scored by the visitor team...lol...maybe the only event i can see matching this in NHL history was probably Guy Lafleur 1st goal (as a Ranger) against Canadiens in the Montreal forum...really rare events !!!

  • My Dad once told me that he was priviliged to have watched Rocket Richard play in person and we are equally so to have watched Wayne. One day we will tell our grandchildren when they see some of his records still standing, just how great he was. Happy Birthday Wayne!

  • Happy BIrthday, Great One!

  • Does any1 notice that they got the date wrong at the start of the video?

  • i think i would of given my left nut to be at that game.

  • is this just me or does this vid have amazing graphics for and old hockey game

  • on avg their is less scoring now so his record wont be broken.

  • Was this in Edmonton? Can't tell.

  • 4 new teams weakened the defence of the league, leading to firewagon hockey. He wouldn't have put the numbers up now, but he was still best of his time. Like Marty Brodeur, wouldn't have any of his records playing a 40/40 split. League average GAA was 4.06 in 81-82 .....crazy

  • Goaltending was much weaker back then. So many soft goals along the ice because goalies were all playing a stand-up style. It's hard enough to get 100 points these days, so like you're all saying, he'll never be touched. When Gretzky had his 215 point season, the top 10 scorers in the league all had 100+ point seasons, while these days we're lucky to see 3 or 4. That same season, 1 goaltender had a GAA under 3.00. Good on whoever comes even SOMEWHAT close to Gretzky.

  • mr. hockey, my ass.

  • i dont think he may have passed Gretzky, but his pts per game would have been better.. before Lemieux retired the first time his pts per game was 2... and the reason he wouldnt pass Gretzky is caus i dont think he would have played 20 years... but he definitely would have been close 2nd in the pts for a career i think if he continued

  • How ironic he did this against the Oilers...greatest ever.

  • How ironic he did this against the Oilers...

  • How can anyone beat Wayne Gretzky's records it is almost impossible he was amazing.

  • it's crazy how sports works.i mean how fitting.wayne gets traded from edmonton and then breaks the record on the ice where he skated for a long time.plus infront of the fans that cheered for him for so long.

  • What makes this so awesome is that he put up another 1,006 points after this. The man was a machine

  • @hockeyguy1394 what makes it so horrible is that he scored the goal against edmonton.

  • Gretzky was a offensive marvel, also a Cherry picker who played behind body guards.

Bobby Orr put his body on the line playing defense, blocking shots and fighting. They both revolutionized the game and earned stats and trophies............There has been many players as skilled as Gretzky, but none as skilled and as tough as Bobby Orr.

  • @MrDaemonB hey no one is going to beat the great one.

  • @NRPBrute i'm not hating on Wayne... he was a good player.. Mario in my opinion is better tho.. better pts per game avg then gretzky before he retired the first time.. and same goes for mario as for bo... if mario didnt retire in the prime of his career, he would have been better too and broke records

  • @RAM9119 dont know about that bud. He did not have the team wayne had. There is no chance that mario would have got 50 goals in 39 games no way. Wayne is one of a kind and mario would have not been able to touch any of his records.

  • @RAM9119 Gretzky averaged 1.92 points a game over his career, Lemieux averaged 1.88. Lemieux definitely would be firmly in 2nd place all time in total points if he played more games but i don't think he would of passed gretzky.

  • arguing is never gonna stop over this... pads were smaller.. ppl in general werent as big. and gretzky was ahead of his time.. he was too talented back then nobody could stop him... put him in his first few years in the league now he would never do what he did!!! adding on to most his points with the Oilers which is probably the best team in history helped him out a lot too!!! he could have played with the Jets and i dont think he would have got as many records as he did!

  • 1:01 to 1:10 its the same guy clapping the same way twice xD

  • define irony, gretzky calls the devils a micky mouse organization then he retires with one

  • what i mean is in the last 8 year of gretzkys carrear he scored waayyy less because the pads and stuff got bigger.

  • @SlimLPShady Nah slim he was getting old and had his back wrecked by a Gary Suter cheapshot. He was keeping pace with a prime Pavel Bure as an old man.

  • @GregGumbel Troof.

  • He also won the game in OT

  • Hes the fucking man

  • thats the first time ive seen a home crowd erupt after the visiting team scores

haha fitting its against the oilers

  • I loved that this point won him the record, a standing ovation from the home crowd in Edmonton, and tied the game. Then he was booed because he won the game in OT! lol

  • Comment removed

  • He did it with a late equalizer. Backhand, no goalie and one home turf. This moment was as flawless as his career.

  • @cyberyank They didnt leave him open, Gretzky followed the path.

  • His career just seems so perfect. Seems like he's broken every record in such a timely fashion. This record he broke when playing in Edmonton, 50 goals in 39 games in a game where he scored 5 goals, his 1072nd goal (playoffs + WHA combined) to break Gordie Howe's total on his last NHL goal.

  • On a backhand? Like his first ever WHA goal, first NHL goal, This goal, next goal (the game here went into overtime and Gretzky won it with a backhand!). Best advice ever from Gordie Howe to Gretzky: Work on your backhand!

  • Gretzky was born to play hockey in todays day and age. the way i see it, back then was rougher and not a goal scorers game. Now, the goalie's are tougher but the rules are much more strict and has made it a goal scorers game. In my opinion, Gretzky owns any era that he would have played in, but it doesnt matter what he would have done in this era. He tore it up in his years and thats all that matters. A goal is a goal and an assist is an assist.

  • You know how much the oiler fans love him when you look at 1:29, lol they get scored on but they don't care at all lol

  • They left him all alone so open

  • yes, or maybe he found the open spot

  • @tjackson76 all set up, all bullshit, they let em have it. fraud

  • @tjackson76 If you covered Wayne, he'd find the open man, and the open man would score. If you left Wayne uncovered, Wayne would score. It was a matter of picking your poison!

  • @tjackson76 DATZ DA GREAT ONE FOR U AM I RIGHT?

  • @cyberyank LA had six attackers on the ice, there was inevitably going to be at least one LA player open

  • @cyberyank Watch his career highlights and you'd think the same for every other game. He was THAT good!

  • @cyberyank yes because they wanted to. the one person not to cover of course is him. If you watched that game essa was all over him all game.

  • Haha 99 ratings for this vid. Damn, I just can't rate it now. :P

  • damn look at how short the glass is

  • wayne was just so smooth

  • are the oilers fans really cheering for the kings ? Even if they still loved gretzky unthinkable where i come from

  • when a guy wins you 4 cups you tend to have a soft spot in your heart for him

  • Back in those days I think the home team wore the light color jersey's, this is one of the only times I've ever seen a home team cheer for the opponent scoring. But they had justification here aswell..

  • I, personally, don't think Gretzky's scoring record will ever be touched. Some may get within shouting distance, but 2,857 points....I just don't see it. Gretzky was already super human on the ice...what comes next??

  • I agree that his record won't be touched, but if he had played with the same skill and speed in today's nhl he would never have that many points

  • @areawill Are you kidding me? The game is so much more wide open today, he would score MORE

  • Sure, today there is simply less goals in NHL then before 20 years. Its much more competitive.

  • look at the goalie equiptment too, today it blocks most of the net

  • @tjackson76

    dude, its the same size

  • um, no they're not, My Brian's pads from 20 years ago look like peewee pads next to my Rebok I use now.

  • @tjackson76 goalies are bigger as well, but who cares? No one dominated like Gretzky

  • @Flowerpunkt i dont think you understand exactly how good gretzy was. he had more assists alone than mark messier had total points. it would not have mattered what era he played in because the second most dominant player ever was only half the player wayne was and the numbers are there to validate that. if anyone ever gets even close to his records you can call them a true hockey god.

  • Not even shouting. He's the only one that scored over 2000 pts and he almost had 3000. The next closest guy is 1000 pts behind lol. It's gonna be hard to top.

  • clutch!

  • I just don't understand how someone could hate Gretzky so much. He was a classy leader. Great player, he was a good person on and off the ice.

I don't think hockey could have a better player, a more respectful player to the game.

He deserves to have every record he broke and respect.

  • indeed!!

  • Its funny how it works. Its a generation thing with hating someone. My dad always told me, that in there times, everyone hated Howe, Orr, Esposito, Lafleur and the list goes on and on. Now everyone's a bunch of Gretzky haters, but I can guarantee everyone this; if someone comes along one day and breaks Wayne's records, we'll all hate that guy too and say Gretzky was better. And regardless of what anyone says about Wayne, whether you love him or hate him, he was an amazing hockey player.

  • It's inevitable to happen sooner or later, someone will beat Gretzky's score but I for one am not a person who will hate that man. Because Gretzky was the greatest man to play on the Oilers, Kings and Rangers. And to surpass that would be astounding. And to this generation that player would be the greatest to Gretzky. But to the fans back then and until it happens, Gretzky is still the greatest.

  • @IFM2002 Nobody is ever going to beat Gretzky's records it just flat out isn't going to happen, 92 goals in a season? players today are lucky to even get 50, 215 points in a season? not a chance that's ever happening again crosby is on a tear and is only on pace for 140. as for total points nobody is touching that either crosby has 506 in his first 5 seasons Gretzky had 813 in his first 5. Gretzky is and always will be #1 those records will never be broken

  • i think the big majority is loving that kind of players .. there will allways be some haters and thats ok though

  • Wayne Gretzky was a great scorer. Bobby Orr was the greatest player ever.If Gretky had to play in the same years that Bobby Orr did he would have to have been a lot tougher to score as much. Orr changed hockey before Gretzky. The number of points Orr scored as a defenseman when the seasons were shorter and the goals scored in games were not as high scoring is ijust incredible. The YouTube videos Greatest Hockey Legends-Bobby Orr tell the story.

    GRETZKY GREAT SCORER

    BOBBY ORR GREATEST PLAYER

  • @geocgeo

Imagine how Gretzky would've destroyed teams like the expansion Oakland Seals, with their best player, a 35 years old Gerry Ehman (who?!). My God, Orr had an easy era to play in...

  • @geocgeo this argument never dies. Both those guys were the absolute best during their time. They both dominated the game and were clearly the superstars amongst superstars. There is no need to bash either guy (not that you are but just generally speaking) because they were both class acts. The way these two icons represented their sports makes me proud to be a hockey fan.

  • @geocgeo Mario Lemieux greatest player! add up their pts per game avg..Lemieux is 0.1 pts behind Gretzky and the years Lemieux missed would have been in his prime... he would have beat the pts. per game avg that Gretzky has!!! but it is all about ppls different opnions! Lemieux to me is the best ever! and first million dollar player!!

  • @RAM9119 what do you mean the "first million dollar player"?

  • @geocgeo Mario Lemieux greatest player! add up their pts per game avg..Lemieux is 0.1 pts behind Gretzky and the years Lemieux missed would have been in his prime... he would have beat the pts. per game avg that Gretzky has!!! but it is all about ppls different opnions! Lemieux to me is the best ever!

  • @RAM9119 Ummm......statistics don't mean shit. Hell, Bo Jackson was fucking awesome in football, too bad he got injured. Hey, do me a favor and ask Mario who the greatest hockey player of all time is. Pretty sure he will name Wayne, as will like 99% of all hockey players. It's only fanboys that hate on Wayne. You don't hear of many hockey players that hate on him.

  • @kimball99 i think its a pretty known fact that gretzky is the greatest hockey payer to ever lace up. i mean, maybe people can argue orr is better just cause he revolutionized the defenseman but no one compares to the points that 99 puts up. FACT: Gretzky s the best hockey player of all time.

  • @kimball99 ur right alot of people hate crosby right now and alot of people dont like ovechkin

  • @kimball99 But I'll always hate Sidney Crosby anyway

  • @kimball99 break his record? no one will break Wayne's record

  • bite me, my point is that to be a truly great hockey player you need to play all aspects of the game which gretzky could not. thats why orr will always be number one

  • Like if you really think about by 1989 he acomplished eveeything a 20 year veteran would only dream of.Four stanley cups, 2 canada cup titles, 2 con smythes all time points, record fastest to five hunderd, fastest to 50 in 50 (39)games like seriosuly all he had to do was play the game the he way he felt like it, he was just that good everybody just has to accept that..im from edmonton by the way...

  • this was in 1989.

  • scoring a bunch of points alone doesnt make u a great player

  • but those points lead to wins.

  • they say if lemiux didnt hav to retire he would hav broken all of gretzkys records in 12 years in the nhl(srry if i spell it wrong)

  • just think people this guy broke the all time points record in 10 years just to put it in other terms thats karrem adul jabbar hold the all time point record in 10 years of playiong insane...

  • i luv wayne gretzky his the best player and i am brazilian

  • And think that he had another 1 000 MORE points to do before retirement!! Unbelivable!!

  • ...but did they win the game though? lol

  • yes they did! Gretzky scored the game-winner in OT!

  • 19 years ago today bitches!

  • 20 years ago.... It was 1989.

The Kings won 5-4 in overtime.

  • Wayne Gretzky war der große ein, und niemand kann den großen man nie wieder

  • unbelievable reaction for an away game. shows what great class Gretzky had, and not to mention bringing Edmonton 4 cups before heading to Hollywood.

  • Of course they were still praising him! He single handedly put Edmonton on the map!! I'm just saying, you don't usually see a player visiting his old stadium in a new uniform these days and receive such a reaction.. Shows Gretzky's a class act all the way.

  • NOT THAT BIG OF A REACTION??? With all due respect, you are a hockey idiot...this ranks up there with Eddie Giacomins' return to MSG and stoning the Blueshirts as well as Guy LaFleurs' first trip to the Forum when he scored twice....

  • 1989 actually

  • Then he would go on to score 1000 more points

  • damn those kings jerseys were sweet

  • @santahchrist

so much cooler back then if you compare 'em too the ugly purple/white ones they have now. Atleast the 3rd jersey the black one is really cool.

  • I remember being a little kid watching this on TV and getting SO MAD that the Oilers fans were cheering for him ... haha.

  • budys there should given wayne a proper uppertunity to celebrate, but still nice

  • why oilers traded gretzky?!?!?!?

  • Because people would give their left nut to have gretzky on their club

  • There is no doubt that Bobby Orr was an unbelievable player, but no one will achieve what Gretsky achieved. Gretsky is indeed the great one.

  • How can step up to gretzkys records who?

    Nooooooooo body!

    Deal with it:)

  • Agree

  • of course ovechkin not the best 2 ever play ha your fuckin retarded what are you 12?

  • Look at it logically. Ovechkin has played 4 seasons in the NHL. In those 4 seasons he has 219 goals and 420 points. In Gretzky's first 4 NHL seasons he had 241 goals and 617 points. This proves that Gretzky was not only a better goal scorer, but a better passer and skater, and overall better player. Gretzky scored around 200 points in at least 7 or 8 seasons, and the highest Ovechkin has got is 112. And Gretzky's first 200 point season was his 4th season. Ovechkin got half of that in his 4th.

  • in addition in the dead puck era on a terrible team at 37 years of age gretzky put up 97 points-an in prime..no touch league ovechkin like total. Ovechkin when hearing gretzky say he thinks Alex is a really good player..he was taken a back and said wow thats awesome to hear coming from the greatest player ever.

  • I agree but centers score more points and Gretz was in an era where a 5-4 game was considered defensive hockey. I still think Wayne was unparalleled but Ovy deserves huge credit for being third fastest to 200 behind Wayne and Bossy. That's incredible considering the NHL actually has defensive systems and Michelin man athletic goalies in net.

  • very good point, but the game was different back then, it is hard to compare the two because even the 3rd and 4th liners back then were getting 30 goals a season. Gretzky is hands down the best player to ever play the game(coming from a Habs fan), but I personally think Ovechkin has to work harder to get this goals!!

  • Gretzky's the best forward to ever play the game. He could score and pass perfectly. He was elusive because he had to be because he was so small and would surely be injured had he taken a hard enough hit.

But to me, Bobby Orr is the greatest of all time. Bobby could do it all, pass, shoot, hit, block, fight, and dangle. And he was a defenseman. Had Orr been healthy, He would have been considered the greatest w/o question but Gretzky had much better vision. He knew where the puck was going.

  • yeah your right but orr did not have endurance

  • I agree with you for the most part but I think the thing Gretzky had that nobody had was his level of knowledge of the game. The man was 10 moves ahead of everyone on the ice. I love Bobby Orr, but Gretzky has him beat bum knee or no!

  • You make good points for each player, but you just can't compare players from different eras. Who's to say what Gretzky would have done had he been playing in Orr's time?

Bobby Orr was by far the best in his time, as was Gretzky in his.

Side note this was an AWAY game! Gretzky had so much respect in Edmonton that the crowd erupted even after their team gave away a lead with under a minute left.

  • Gretzky was only good during his era of hockey where contact and super defense strategies was not that great yet. The game evolved and was studied and coaches came up with better and optimal strategies for defense.

I have nothing against Gretzky, and probably nobody will ever reach his records points, but we need to stop saying he is the best ever because skills is relevant. I may be stronger then 10000 kindergargen kids, but I am not sure about highschool kids, yet my strength is the same..

  • your a fucking retard. hockey was much more physical when he played players could get away with hooks and holds and a lot of other shit that would be called a penalty now. the difference now is players are faster and smaller not stronger dumb fuck

  • You Gretzky super crazy fan you! Denied!!!!

  • well Gretzky was still one of the top men at the end of is career too. He did 97 points in his second last season and at that time the NHL hockey was really defensive, How many do 97 points nowdays well not many and not when they have played 20 seasons.

  • with goalies like hasek, brodeur, ron hextall, ed belfour and so many other great goalies i think that Gretzky was and still is one of the best players of all time

  • gretzky is the great one...but bobby orr was the greatest player to ever step on NHL ice...

  • pppppuleeeease...............orr the great what if, if ive heard of one. Outside boston nobody agrees!

  • You clearly have no grasp of hockey and the transition it's gone through from the 1980's. Gretzky would be like Savard who play's for Boston in today's NHL. Just look at his decrease in goal total by the time the 90's rolled in, why ? Lemieux was still scoring LOTS, even up to age 33. Gretz has no defining feature that would make him anything other than a playmaker today. Big shot? No. Strong? No. Speed? No. Size? What a joke. Gretz would be top ten in points in today's NHL.Don't wet your pants.

  • Fuck off.

  • please tell me who else has scored 50 goals in 50 games since Gretz? If you want to downplay Wayne's talents then why don't you go hit up some pro players and ask their opinions on who is the greatest play to ever play hockey. Until the shut the fuck up.

  • Read above message to bigo.

  • How could you be so ignorant to truly believe that a player who not only holds so... many (a lot.) records; but not only that he holds them but he shattered them. I can only imagine you are 1 of 3 things. 1) A living room player... 2) A not so wise, self-proclaimed know it all, and an all around idiot. 3) American. You can make no point or argument which could even bring you close to convincing any knowledgeable hockey player and fan agree with you.

  • In response to shivakrishnarama

  • You just undercut your own argument, you said I can't convince any KNOWLEDGEABLE hockey player. You don't qualify. Mario Lemieux had 160 pts in 1992-1993 and he took 2 months OFF for leukemia treatment. Bobby Orr was +/-126 in 1970-71.Scotty Bowman has called Mario Lemieux the GOAT. Gretzky was a good player on a good team in an era of offense first. Don't talk to me if you can't refute the points I make. You like to bend over backwards for Gretzky, I'm not against gays I just think you're wrong.

  • Hey dont bring Americans into this with that idiot....I'm American New York born and i know full well NO ONE is going to come close to Gretzky anytime soon. Ovechkin is the closest thing to him in todays Nhl, and even he will never score 50 in 39.....Most americans know Gretzky was the greatest, todays Nhl or in any Nhl time period

  • Gretzky=CANADIAN

  • i love how the oilers fans cheered when he scored to tie the game. great vid

  • in a way, after everyone established that gretzky was the great one, it all became sorta like a list. and on this list was records that gretzky had a chance to break. then once "the list" was made, all gretzky had to do on "the list" was to see how many records he could break before he retired

  • He would then go on to get another 1000 points before he retired.

  • i had 9 in one game age 10...oh well..

  • this was 1989, not 1990 as it said in the beginning. But great video....thanks for posting it!

  • Best player ever!

  • Gretzky is is the reason edmonton had glory days in edmonton. and the first team to retire 99.. of course they cheer him..

  • can you imagine how many goals The Rocket would of goten if he played 82 games!!

  • Players in today's game will not be able to get that wide open without getting checked to the ice.

  • Sigh, I still wonder sometimes what could have been if Pocklington didn't drive the team into the ground.
