  • Did this make it through congress?

  • I love your videos, Callum. Your talent is indeed worthy of bringing the great Carl out to new generations. However, your voice work needs some guidance. I'm a director, and I suggest you ally yourself with an actor or a voice coach. It's a shame that your brilliant scripts disappear in mumbling. Sorry...

  • Well I'm just an inferior alien (i.e. not one of the master race aka US citizen), and in a very anti american mood right now, something to do with a dislike of fascism. Anyhow good luck to that increasingly small band of US people who are not in thrall to the fucking far right, religious or otherwise, who are campaigning to keep the JWT.

  • Who do we elect to congress in 2012 to save the James Webb?

  • Humanity will be empowered by the answers to which the James Webb Space Telescope will seek. Let us make firm intellectual investments on the future without being consumed by the problems of today.

Please write to your congress men, show your support if you truely belive you want to help JWST.

  • Could not agree more.

  • dude it's a good video but please read the script again without making every sentence sound ridiculous because of where you put the emphasis

  • i can't stand the way this guy is reading the script. he emphasizes every other word

  • If I were rich like a motherfucker I would pich in with a lot of money for this project. However I'm not, so I guess I just have to hope Washington get their heads out of their asses.

  • Sadly I think most Americans would rather spend that money on bombs and guns to protect us from the terrorist.

  • I guess we should save it but lets fucken learn from it and not the do the SLS. This is rocket science which means it is an art. Apple works because its product is simple and most importantly it work. SLS is so complicate with so much powers and w history of rocketry it probably have 50% chance on going to Mars. We need to send up a lot of little Webb or Hubble and assemble the image in space. The hundred launch is a lot more perfect that the first few.

  • A few centuries back, Religion was slowing down scientific development... Now the military/war is slowing down our quest for knowledge. Sigh...

  • the world is so shit. we as humans have so much potential but instead of us just joining hands and helping each other out we start wars for resources and religion which takes money from research and wastes it a way on war and this isnt just the states im talking about almost every country does that its pathetic. Its amazing we got this far with all the squabbling going on

  • @s4m5on A global awakening to this fact is finally happening. Help spread the word and the word of Love. This Earth, if we go about it wisely, has abundance for all. There are no 'enemies' ... sure, each culture / country etc. has a few bad apples but we must not let that spoil everything for ... everyone.

Right now the U.S.A. is trying to start a war with Iran and it must not be permitted. It is unjust, and illogical. We must stop WWIII before we investigate space. I'm sorry :(

  • Is there something people from outside the US can do to help?

  • With the shutdown of Tevatron. The James Webb would be an ideal way for the US to continue to contribute to the scientific community.

  • Beautiful video. Carl would be so proud to see you carry on his work!

  • I "liked" them.

  • Privatization of science and discovery doesn't concern you? This is a direct assault on the future of human understanding by the corporate plutocracy that has gradually but completely subverted our democratic republic. Know your enemy. Wall Street tells the House what to do. Tell them both what you think of that. OCCUPY WALL STREET

  • This is why you need to OCCUPY WALL STREET

  • @Flerndip22 Actually, a protest that's far more relevant to this is Occupy Freedom Plaza that started Oct 6th, protesters are saying they will not leave until the wars are ended, the troops are home and the money redirected back home to the US.

  • 0:48 Not "all" the galaxies, just as a general trend. Some galaxies are moving toward ours.

  • @FluffyBunniesOnFire -.- We're not in the center and our own galaxy is on the move, some would of course be flying on behind us and appear to be coming closer or even receding as I'm sure not all galaxies are moving from the point of origin at exactly the same speeds.

  • I bet those against this would demand 7 billion dollars be spent immediately to replace the USS Ronald Reagan if it sunk in a storm.

  • If James Webb stays on Earth, I'm leaving.

  • The Freedom Plaza protests haven't started a moment too soon :/

Is there a petition for non US citizens like me?

  • Space is are future not war

  • @Aanthanur and at least 1-third of the world throws away food or eats too much. It's called reality for a reason, because it is really happening.. also, we are suppose to try and change our reality if we don't like it. So try and change Somalia?

  • @Aanthanur What's your point?

  • @badblueman priorities

  • @Aanthanur Saving children in somalia was a priority? Since when?

  • @Aanthanur

    So what?

Africans will always be making more children than what they can support as long as we enable that.. in my opinion we should just let them deal with their shit.. maybe they will actually start to do something useful when we stop spamming money to that endless pit.

  • @Aanthanur You say that as if the funds thus liberated from cancelling the JWST would go towards alleviating starvation in Somalia. Such an argument is a false dichotomy.

  • @Aanthanur I am not a supporter of JW. In fact I am working against it. However, I must take issue with your assertion about canceling JW to feed starving children. I could make the argument about the starving children right here at home.

But this post does bring out something that I think is important. We personally feel that the Astrophysics budget should not be depleted if JW is canceled. We need to make sure that astrophysics carries on. We need to protect funding for Astrophysics

  • I would like to congratulate the video producer for a very good video. The arguments raised are fair and grounded. However, I would humbly suggest that if JW is canceled, NASA, SMD, and the astrophysics community will press on. We need to get our fiscal house in order.

    Respectfully,

    Andrew Gasser

  • @327alg i love telescopes, they are great and we surely should place something like JW up in space, but we still have enough problems to solve here on this planet.

  • @Aanthanur The problem is we've always had problems to solve on this planet and always will. If we decided to solve every problem before moving forward we would still be living in caves. Also, someone would be complaining about the guy 3 caves down who is wasting his time working on some damn thing he calls "a wheel" while there are people starving in the next valley.

One of the things we "waste" our money on today may solve some of the problems of tomorrow but we don't know which one yet.

  • @Aanthanur

The solution to starving children in poor countries isn't feeding them and helping them live long enough to have more kids (thereby prepetuating the cycle of suffering). The solution lies in their numbers falling to a sustainable point and keeping them there, all by contraception, which requires education, undoing religious indoctrination, & preventing evangelists from propagating contraception avoidance. This requires funding but not the massive amount that feeding them does.

  • @themsfightinwoids never said feeding them is the solution.

  • @Aanthanur meanwhile children in our own country are starving.... if you are seriously playing that card, play it towards the trillions spent on war. Because i dont think you know(or most people) what a trillion dollars truly is.

  • The reason Somali children are starving is that their parents are uneducated and ignorant, we are not because we have strived to be educated and less ignorant and the web telescope is our next step, or do we go back to the dark ages in religious ignorance.

  • @Aanthanur i don't see why this comment was voted down so much. it's true. a small fraction of the military budget would do wonders for Somalia. A fucking TRILLION dollars?!?! No wonder we are in an economic crisis. Who the hell lowers taxes while being in two wars? George W. Bush! That's who! (idiot)

  • @Aanthanur "There are two ways to make the world a better place: You can decrease the suck or you can increase the awesome" -Hank Green

This is how we increase the awesome.

Interestingly enough, he too was talking about the JWST

  • "I believe there comes a time when every civilization must re evaluate its priorities, and I believe that time is now."

<3 Amen to that my friend.

  • I'll do what I can

  • My one caveat about JWST is that location in orbit makes it unable to be to repaired or mission extended by upgrades. If Hubble had been in the same L2 orbit it would have been just space junk. I understand why it needs to be at L2 because it is IR telescope. I also think that when Hubble reaches its end of life, that it should be retrieved from orbit and put in a museum. We have learned so much with Hubble it would be sacrilegious to burn it up and crash it into the ocean.

  • R.I.P. NASA :(

  • first? :O
