I was a member of the snare line during that year. I loved every second of that show. To those of you that badmouth it just because it's a "drum corps ripoff"....the video doesn't play the part where we credit the entire show to BD 99. If anything, imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. I've yet to come across another college marching band that puts the heart into their rehearsals and performances like TCU does, no matter whether they change their show every home game or not.
@ducatiflyboy That's one hard show for a college band to put together. It's nice to see a college band not do the 120bpm "song-song-done" shows, but still be entertaining. Fantastic job with this show.
me being first chair trumpet and hitting high notes. wow. and im in high school. but this guy/girl trumpet that was hitting double g's was amazing. great job whoever you are.
True, but range isn't everything. I top out at D (sitting on 2nd ledger above staff), but i still get lots of gigs because I can play in tune, sound good, be musical, and improvise.
very nice execution, but did they HAVE to use a DCI show? If they would make their own stuff they would be even more friggin awesome. more original stuff would be great:)
Sorry if I wasn't clear enough. It's not the music im griping about, its the drill. I'm not trying to offend anybody at all, I just appreciate creativity more than imitation. Surely a university with a kickass music program like tcu has SOMEONE that can write a good drill.
Their band director DOES write drill. Quite a bit too. And writes it for HS bands that win state and national titles. It's not like he's incapable. But truly, what's wrong with trying a DCI drill every now and then? Even when he taught at the HS, he woud slip Cavaliers stuff into our shows. It was a good challenge.
ummm....is this really TCU!? if so then TCU is by far the best pure marching band in the mountain west conference. That show must have taken A LOT of work. I am impressed.
pretty good band and good execution. But I got bored way too easy. Look at the drill. It's pretty much the same throughout the show. I like the music but the drill just bored me to death
I'm sorry, I just can't stand drum corps rip offs. They do a good job, but I just hate seeing a band copy a great drum corps show. It takes away from both the corps and the bands identity.
I thought the opener was excellent. The Musical Articulation and the impact of if was phenomonal! My Band currently has that for our opener in our show called
for the record, im on the snare line at my high school. i know for a fact that we arent as good (and big, and as well funded) as you are, but that doesnt change my opinion towards this kind of stuff. our music is purchased based on what the band likes, not on what music has won a corps a finals competition in years before. we write our own drill ourselves too, basing it off of our own creativity, not someone elses.
Good for your school, there's nothing wrong with either school of thought! Whether a show has won a competition or not doesn't really matter, because we're not trying to win anything. We don't have to compete, we do it purely for fun. Ever heard someone else do a show that you wanted to play... The marching band director here writes the drill and many aspects are taken into account. I'm sure there are some similar aspects in the drill, but really who cares.
A lot of college marching bands go out and pu three or four sets on the field a week and play a stand tune, I hope you end up in one of those bands, I'll bet then you'd be gungho to be at a college that did shows like TCU!
yeah, i could join the spartan marching band drumline at michigan state, you should check some of their shows out on youtube, youll be surprised at how good a marching band can be. various friends of mine are in smb, and i take private lessons from the drumline instructor there, as well as a percussionist in the detroit symphony orchestra (where my parents work)
Sometimes the organizations sell the music sometimes the arrangers themselves do and other times people transcribe and adapt the music. Who said that you have to be original? Hello this is college marching band no one gives a shit if you play the most groundbreaking marching show ever and change the genre completly all they want is to be entertained.
For the record I was giving you some credit with the Woodwind remark. It doesn't suprise me you're a drummer, you might understand if you were a musician....
or your information ive played 7 years of piano, and another 7 years of various other string instruments. it also helps that both of my parents are professional musicians in a symphonic orchestra. i know a thing or two about music..
i like how im not attacking you, simply your marching band's choice of show.
You're lucky to have a musical family. I make a living playing and writing/arranging music so I know a thing or two about music myself. You got under my skin bad mouthing my school, but you are entitled to your own opinion and I will respect that. If you don't like our choice of show then don't listen to it, no big deal.
@Fwlr2004 Agreed....that kid up there doesn't understand that nobody in the crowd gives 2 shits about how original a show is, they just want the entertainment. We got standing ovations a lot of times when we played this full show for the crowds. That's enough for me.
Also, peterrifel2pro4u, you must hate every tribute band that is out there, and ever cover band, and every recording artist that makes multi millions by taking music samples from everyone else's songs, etc.......
you just pick a show that you like? so that implies that you're choosing all of the music for it. that would mean that you just happen to choose the exact same music, and arrange it for marching band almost exactly the same that a drum corps (obviously besides the instrumentation) did in years before? and when you had the drill written it was noticeabley similar to the drill that the corps used as well?
No we don't just copy drum corps shows, we just pick a show that we like. It may end up being a DCI show it may not. You see when you direct a marching band you have to pick music out, crazy I know but stick with me... You want something that apeals to the average football fan so a good Corps show is perfect.
Actually some members march corps, like myself, and still have to go to college. So instead of taking a few months off we keep up our chops having fun! Way to be a dumbass....
P.S. Wasey only missed that note in one performance it just happens to be the one here. I would be willing to bet he could play at least an octave above you...
Well, we had ton of drum corps members in the band, most of the percussion, a handful in the guard, and 9 or 10 in the brass(Trumpet soloist marched Scouts). We do one show a year for haldtime and exhibitions and also learn a pregame show and stand music.
i love the trumpets in this show. awesome!

you say you 'pick the show', does that mean that you buy the entire show? gosh i didnt know the blue devils sold their shows to the public..
way to be original, just taking the exact same music that one of the most famous drum corps used, that won them first place.
why would i go back to dcp and talk to the other woodwinds, when i myself dont play a woodwind instrument.

FWIW I think it's much better to hit the back button and forget about the video you didn't like than to go around insulting the ensemble.
