  • if the people watching this video dont know how to throw a 4-seam fastball, then they probably shouldnt be pitching

  • Home run derby pitches!

  • Step 1) Grip ball correctly.

    Step 2) Throw

  • BAAALLLLLLLLLLL TAKE YOUR BASE

  • What's it called when you throw a fastball with all four fingers on the ball instead of just two?

  • this guys way better then expert village

  • most hit pitch in baseball is a high fast ball so every1 suck it and hit the damn ball

  • That wouldnt have been a ball for me. im 6'4".

  • @ryanowns5 The ball is not high, is away or inside (LEFTY HERE)

  • no ball can rise you idiot you even proved it when you pitched the ball dropped.

  • hes firing!

  • sounds good

  • Dennis Quaid is giving pitching lessons now. Just cuz u play one on TV Dennis....

  • strike you dipshits would have all swung at it

  • ow it hit me

  • ball 4 take ur base

  • @surferboy109 lol

  • you are swinging you're glove way too far back..

    keep it near your body....

  • "No swing, says the umpire."

  • Everyone shut the hell up That was a great pitch it wouldve been counted as a strike in many games and it wasnt 60 mph im in first year of JV and our best pitcher can pitch 75 MPH that was faster atleast the same 75-80 MPH and my brother played for Lawrence as a pitcher the best pitcher youve ever seen he pitches 90-95 and that guys was just a mighty bit slower

  • @BigMatt5290 hes the best pitcher weve ever seen really? so hes better than stephen strasburg ok ya i believe you liar u fucking piece of shit your probably some 45 year old virgin who wants to think he is still a kid u little fuck

  • @cameron251 what i never said better than Strasburg you took that way too seriously, plus im not even 25 yet, im also happily married with 2 children you asshole, my brother was a great pitcher but you took it way too seriously i just didnt like people talking down a good pitcher never meant greater than Strasburg.

  • @BigMatt5290 oh my bad mis understanding then sorry.

  • why is there always an arguement on videos... its so stupid geta life and move on

  • I just turned 13 and im throwing in a fast ball at 75 mph its intense for me haha

  • ball2

  • ball 1

  • it is supposed to look like it raises, but doesn't

  • look like 60mph fastball

  • i kno i feel wierd wen i dont do leg kick wen i come through my pitches i got so used to it

  • For all of you wondering if this "rising" fastball actually rises, the answer is it doesn't. Simple physics tells you that all objects are pulled downwards by gravity at the force of 9.8 meters per second. With that in mind, the four-seam fastball is the quickest pitch one could throw, meaning that it will reach the catchers mit faster than any other pitch. It seems to be rising since the fastball doesn't fall as much as the other pitches. Thus, it only appears to be a rising ball.

  • not true terminal velocity dictates how fast an object can fall, therefore a penny and a human have a much different terminal velocity, this is when density and weight come into play

  • There is slightly more to it than that. It is true that baseballs don't rise but the backspin on the ball does generate lift. Consequently the net downward force is reduced and the ball falls more slowly than one that is not spinning.

If a pitcher could double or triple the amount of backspin the ball would actually rise at ~95mph. Unfortunately, no pitcher can do this - it's a shame.

  • @lotus49a ur a shame.

  • @lotus49a my cousin isaic has played baseball for along time and he made up a pitch with so much spin on it, u can see it rise atleast 2 - 3 inches. unfortunately its kinda slow....

  • haha why would i trust a guy that cant even pitch himself? does he really pitch like that?!?

  • this guy should not ever throw another ball again. such bad mechanics

  • LOL, I noticed too. No leg kick, exhale, picking up the dime, yada yada... Well, I'm glad he's adding content to YouTube. =)

  • A FASTBALL CANNOT RISE!! IT IS PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE! Unless you are on a lower plane, it cannot rise! There is no such thing as a rising fastball. The ball just gets there way faster than you think and it plays a trick on you.

  • well there is a such thing as a rising fastball its called a gyroball its so rare to see one person to to such a thing

and there is rumors that a current pitcher Weaver (i forogt his first name hes from the LA Angles) can pitch a gyroball

  • Hmmm...well I looked at the gyro ball pitch and it doesnt look like it rises. Its definatly a wierd pitch, but to me it looks more like a 2 seam fast ball...not sure though. I'll check out a few other vids on it.

  • sorry dude i just heard from alot of people that the Gyroball rises but not that the fact that it goes all the at the top (like it rise so little that the batters get tricked thinking that its a straight 4 seam fastball)

  • Ok well...I guess there is a pitch out there that counteracts physics

  • And Ive looked at a lot of videos on this pitch and not of them look to "rise". They are mostly saying that it looks like a fastball but at the last second it "breaks". It looks to me more of a hybrid type of a pitch. But what do I know?

  • its impossible to make a baseball rise, unless you throw it about 400mph

  • Comment removed

  • The ball will slip off the end of your fingers like normal throw and when you throw it under hand you will get top spin

  • fail

  • no... have you heard of a riser? it a high spinning fast ball pitch which allows the ball to use it's seams to rise itself.

  • Your a dumbass a baseball can't rise.

  • Not unless you're pitch submarine.

  • ball 1

  • yeah seriously, lol. it seems like you can't trust anybody who gives tips about how to throw pitches until you actually see them throw a strike.

  • @ARRIBALOSYANKEES ball for lefties, outside corner strike for righties

  • im a dare grad

  • I always loved the nonbelievers. Popped up to infielders and apparently never knew how it happened.

  • allstar boy 3 he throws fast

  • LEFTYS FTW

  • Thanks for the demo... though it is physically impossible for the ball to "rise." It just resists the effects of gravity for longer due to the pitch movement and the speed... and gives the illusion of it "rising."

  • ur fingers shud b on the end of the seam so u can flick the ball to add more speed

  • u throw slow!

  • Take a dog and fuck it

  • Can you also throw a football a quarter mile?

  • A quarter mile you ask.. make it a half mile.

  • Can your curveball break 50 feet?

  • only on weekends

  • lol....

  • impossible

  • if you throw it 50 feet in the air, sure.

  • yes yes and my grandma can throw a 200 mph fastball...

  • Is that pamorama park? Nice vid though, i now now how to throw a 4 seam when i'm pitching.

  • wtf dude thats so fake

  • hi im posting a message

  • hi you are a faggot

  • hi im posting a message

  • hi you are a faggot

  • LEFTY

  • go away spammer faggot

  • you move your foot

  • What I am confused about is that it either flys to far to the left, or just goes straight into the ground when I try to throw... How do I make it go where I want it at all times?

  • First: practice.

You have to release it and let your wrist flick it. When done correctly, it gives almost a flat trajectory. It can be more or less going downward.

Also, if you force your motion into having your forearm going up, it won't work. Bother about the arm being over your shoulder whatever the angle of your trunk and let your forearm go where it has too.

I'll send a message for further explanation.

  • just have the same release point every time

  • He threw a BALL HAHA

  • outside ball, drag your feet before your release!

  • you cant imagine how much i wanted the ball to hit the camera... LoL Nice video seriously

  • as a lefty, you want to pitch a right handed batter outside, as it's easier to hit an inside pitch off a lefty because of the angle. Take it from me, a minor league baseball player who happens to also be a pitcher.

  • Yep.

  • yea and i'm a catcher on a high school team and i always call our lefty pitchers to pitch ouside to ritey batters...esp curves that break late into the strike zone...so outside all day

  • To each their own. I alternate between low and away to get them to chase it, or low and in and get them to chop one to 3rd base or short. Works either way.

  • you can generate a shit ton of lift with a good 4 seam, it's not going to "rise" like a softball thrown from above the knee. Even if someone (a freak, or a machine) was able to get zero drop out of one and make a frisbee out of it and even catch a current and make it rise, where the hell would they be throwing it? 3 feet over the ump's head. Everyone knows this or they should. It's only regarding one of the most popular things in American culture over the past 150 years.

  • what the fuck are these two people that are fighting talking about. There's nothing in this video to fight about. But while there talking about it..As far as a batter is concerned 4 seam fastball rises. It has relative upward movement depending on how the pitcher throws it. Whoever said A fastball doesn't rise it's simple physics is an idiot. I hate poeple like that. I think most poeple know that and I'm sure this guy does too. But if a fastball stays up, it stays up.

  • 4 seam fastballs do not rise, they just look like they do.

Human beings are not capable of generating enough backspin on a 4 seam fastball to generate enough lift to overcome the weight of the ball. It is possible with much lighter balls like a wiffleball but a baseball is just too heavy.

See the May 2004 article in Popular Mechanics where Peter J. Brancazio, Professor Emeritus of Physics of Brooklyn College, The City University of New York explains that the rising fastball is a myth.

  • Try telling that to Stephen Strasburg...or someone that's faced Ryan.

"Corn isn't a vegatable, Onions don't have a taste and one of the compounds in shampoo is actually piss. By-products from marijuana are one of the strongest know fibers."

    hahaahahahaha Am I missing something???

  • I have to read papers till my eyes hurt, but real studies. I'm no less immature than anyone that traps people on Youtube with trivialities, but Fastballs have movement.

    Period.

  • What people (including you) believe they see is irrelevant.

Read the article I referred to and tell me which part of it is factually incorrect. Fastballs do not rise. Video evidence and wind tunnel experiments prove this regardless of what you believe. Stick to the physics and tell me which part of that article is wrong and explain why you know more than Peter J Brancazio, a physicist who has actually studied this.

  • Dude your so hung up on facts your not listening to what I'm saying. Your hearing ignorance to facts. I'm a premedicine student in college for christ's sake. Trust me I've studied it for fun and I've been tracking everyone's PitchFX since it came out last season. To answer your question. Why do I know more than a guy that "studies" it? It's because I've not only studied it, it's because I've FACED it!

  • How about you answer my question about what was wrong in the article? I don't doubt you are intelligent and educated but that doesn't make you right. I am a physics grad but that doesn't make me right either. I cannot post a link as youtube won't let me but read the article (a quick Google will take you to it online) and tell me what is wrong with it. Thinking you see something does not make it true.

  • Probably going to say something about Bernoulli, the max angular velocity of a pitcher's arm. Avg rpm of mlb fastballs, # of seams. Maybe even air density. I don't think I need to read it. In a game, what you "see" is important. Maybe things like how quickly a batter can move their neck. Long term memory from pitches they've seen. Success in a ball game is ALL about what you "see." I personally don't see anything. I don't take the time. I can see the seams if I watch it. "But you cant do both"

  • You are spot on and you clearly are intelligent and well-informed (a rarity on YouTube). The key point is that pitchers cannot put more than 1800 rpm reverse spin but to overcome the weight of the ball the ball needs to be spinning at about 3600 rpm.

Having said this, you are quite right that it is perception that fools hitters and I never suggested that the perception that the ball rises is not important.

  • Well unless your Richard Feynman you can rarely claim to do both. Got it, Werner?? Besides, Check out a video of Willy Mays talking about Koufax's fastball. That guy is the smartest ball player that ever lived. He talks about what he "Sees" What the hell send me the article, I'll read it. I've read everything else.

  • A four seam fastball rises in relation to where the hitter expects it to be as the ball does not follow the classic parabolic trajectory. That is why hitters routinely swing underneath what is termed a rising fastball.

I'll PM you a link to the article. It is interesting if you like things and as you will have gathered, I do.

  • No problem,

    Likewise.

    Thanks for the article.

  • ok ok ur all nerds

    leave it at that

  • missed the plate.

  • ball!

  • Four seam fastballs don't rise. Period... Simple mathematics

  • mathematics? or physics? lol you dumb shit

  • It's an illusion.

    BTW, physics

  • Yes they can you idiot.

  • If you think a fastball you are very ignorant. Go back to school and learn a little bit about the laws of physics =]

  • I'd prefer taking advice from someone who actually knows what they're talking about, and not a Walmart cashier... Thanks.

  • It's called a job through college duh? You would know if you went... Haha, aeropsace engineering degree here nice job though. =] Keep acting like a douche.

  • I'm the one being a douche?

That's the pot calling the kettle right there kiddo.

  • how fast is this??

  • STEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERIKE

  • his pitches have barely any movement to them

  • Duh its a fastball

  • never seen a 4 or 2 seemer that bites? play at a higher level then you pussy

  • 4 seam goes straight-2 seam moves

  • not always... some have a natural movement in their 4 seam

  • he's talking about the lift created by the flow of air under the ball because of the rotation.

  • 4 seams cant rise. watch mythbusters. even roger clemens cant. its mathmatically and physically impossible.

  • yea the max amount of spin possible on a baseball doesnt exceede the wieght of the ball, it is impossible, but it does have a slight "float" to it. the ball can stay up longer

  • Only way it can "rise" is when you throw submarine or a low sidearm and you throw up.

  • Wrong wrong wrong.

  • is he wrong about throwing a 4 seem fastball

  • no he is not

ther is different ways to throw it

  • There are few things that sound sweeter to me than a 4-seamer coming in on you! I love that hissSSS POP!

  • dude thanks i just couldent get how to throw it.

  • when he says the baseball rises it only looks like it rises but it actually has a straighter plain then that of a 2 seamer therefore looking like it rises. Bartolo Colon. had an amazing 4 seamer back in the day and it actually looks like it rises going 97 MPH its just how we percive things.

  • whats faster a 2 seam or 4 seam fastball?

  • normally a 4 seam

  • you got it backwards. 4 seam=fast and straight, 2 seam=slower with more movement

  • Are you that fucking retarded? A 2-seam is NOT faster than a 4-seam. A 2-seam has more break.

  • ur a retard 4-seamer is faster 2 seamer has tail on it and it harder to hit most of the time.

  • 2 seam has more movement

  • 2 seam breaks a little but 4 seam more velocity and easier to hit the glove

  • ya he was wrong but you didnt need to be such an asshole about it

  • THANK U, these guys are fasg wit no life

  • no problem

  • no were not dont comment people and tell them things that you have no clue about.

  • no fastball rises, but the fourseamer is the one that stays up and with more heat. two seamer does have more movement.

  • do your own research buddy, the 4-seam rises, and the 2 seam drops. i'm sure you look worse doing it and it doesnt matter if you can throw 30 or 100 mph, for a demostration your just trying to help others out, lay off the guy for trying

  • a 4 seam goes straight and a 2 seam tails, the dont rise or drop

  • u no absolutely nothing about baseball go wank off to a picture of a dying moth

  • his pitching form is good, and it doesnt matter how cool u look throwing it

  • The only way a fastball can rise is if there's more lift than gravity...Underhand throwers(Softball pitchers) throw riseballs.

  • Actually a 4 seamer can Rise a little bit if it has enough backspin.

  • I accedently hit a kid in the head with a 4-seam fastball!

  • thats funny

  • why is your glove behind you? isn't it suppose to be at your chest when you deliver the ball???

  • great job just a baseball cannot rise. In order for it to rise the speed has to be doubled its weight or something I forget but it was on the baseball special of mythbusters. So your fastball will not rise if you are wishing it will.

  • I hear a some sort of game-sound at the end.
