Wow! Thanks, I was with the 14th APS and taking a load of ammo from the flight line to our storage bunker on the east side of the runway across from the fire department when this happened. We evacuated the ammo dump fearing another rocket might come in.
I seem to remember that it was later than 5 PM, more like around 9. Then again, my brain aint like it used to be.
I remember that day well. The sirens sounded at about 5pm. I was part of a Reactionery Force that was sent to the Pontoon Bridge that linked Cam Ranh to the mainland and Hwy 1. I was trucked to the mainland side and we set up a point position, expecting a ground attack. It didn't happen but the air show was spectacular. Six MP's were killed I was told and a ship sustained some damage.
I remember it well. I was a Chaplain on the army base with the 124th Transportation command. My office was in the Frontier Chapel on the main drag of the base ( I have forgotten what that road was referred to by the way). I went with convoys mostly carrying helicopter fuel in S&P trucks north and south of Cam Rahn. I traveled from Phan Rang, Nha Trang, Tuy Hoi all the way to Danang and Phue Bai/Hue to visit troops in the field. I had some interesting experiences along the way.
