The intro sounds very similar to a couple of recently newish Irish bands (come and gone) I've heard, but they weren't boring. What is this called, grunge/rock?

Is this a joke? And I used to stick up for hipsters and their focus on cool as opposed to a need for talent or practice, but I cant find anything interesting in this video. For the first two minute, it was a challenge to figure out where the string track was coming from. But in the end, I wished it had been five minutes shorter. .
