For a super great performance of Drop the Needle & Let your Backbone Slide, see the Fresh Wes live performance at the Juno 80's Nite (Jan 2011) on my YouTube account "lansd3".
it's cool that he sampled Haywire. i love when canadian rappers sample canadian music because they have so many old songs to choose from that no american rapper would have already used to death
I'm from the US and this is the first time I heard of this brotha. Simply DOPE !! Too bad he didnt make here cause most people I know that was into hip hop would have loved him.
@quickturtle Shit dude, this is from 89'. Toronto, canada has so much dope hip hop, you should keep checking for it. Other songs you should check out are "getto concept- EZ on the motion" CLASSIC toronto tune, "Dan E O Dear Hip Hop" , "Empire- Impossible" "Empire- Boom'n'pound", "Thrust- Rage", "Getto Concept- Much Love", just too many to mention. Its like when rap moved down south in the United States Hip Hop moved up North to Canada. Also check "Rez official- Lonly" Even the natives repin!
Maestro had it all - image, style, beats, lyrics, and flow. It's a shame that he couldn't cross over into the US and make it huge, but back in those days you pretty much had to be from either NY or LA to make it big in rap. Regardless, this track is awesome, and totally makes me nostalgic.
Some may disagree but Maestro is the Big Daddy Kane of Canada. There was no internet and barely any media coverage. I hope Drake appreciates what Maestro has done to pave the rap road in Canada.
Naysayers say what you will......this is one of the most under-appreciated Rap classics in all of history, and deserves a top spot and tons of respect.
many people say that hip hop isn`t as good today .The reason is that everyone has run out of things to say.And if you listen to what wes is doing, he`s not sayin anything either ,but he does it with flare.THAT`S THE KEY.
this album was like lightning in canada, perfect place, perfect time, and do you hear the last min of this track...fucking sick! for now and for back in 89. i was in gr 8 when this tape came out... those were the days...
Anyone remember the Toronto hip hop artist "Self Defense"? He was from Flemington. Maestro gives shot outs to him... I use to tape rap city when I was in high school back then but I cant find any of Self Defense's tunes.. if anyone has links please post.
I rocked this in my sony walkman back in the early 90's and you could not tell me anything in summer school (Detroit). thanks for the post, i really needed that one!
I've heard a very little about this brotha but I never heard any of his songs until i've seen his videos on Youtube. Too bad they never played his stuff down here in the US. He is definitely one of the best MCs outta Cananda!
The guy who yelled "DROP THE NEEDLE!" was none other than Paul MacAusland, the lead vocalist of the group Haywire...that aforementioned soundbite was taken from the intro to their 1987 hit song "Dance Desire".
I met Marcy Flex on the bus to Maple ridge, I coudln't find his sound track until recently. He's a true rap artist. I was free styled by him it was an honour.
Back in '89 it was virtually impossible for any Canadian hip-hop artist to get any respect in the U.S., period. Heck, it's still like that now. Beyond Snow (you know, the "Informer" dude, who was a joke), there isn't one Canadian hip-hop artist who's made any sort of impact in the U.S. Swollen Members are probably the only Canadian group that Americans have even heard of.
Maestro's biggest mistake was abandoning Toronto and trying to catch on in the New York scene. He never recovered.
i got'em all the way down here in macon g.a. on satellite back in 88' .COPED THE CASSETTE AT CAMALOTE RECORDS FOR 1.99 CAUSE NOBODY HAD NEVER HEARD OF HIM.
thak u!!!!!!!! fresh west, when i was a kid i did'nt know he was from canada but i still loved his music and did the running man to it,i was like 6 or 7,this brings back memories
i just realized this song has nothing to do with anything.... 80% of the time is just a bunch of random sentences.
