ok, so as soon as he said that in the vid i knew there would be a hundred ppl calling him a dumbass for calling it a jake brake. There are too many haters. yes i know its no jake brake but chill out
people....Jacobs brand brakes are "engine brakes" for the most, BUT Jacobs makes aftermarket Cummins exhaust brakes for the 5.9L. The 6.7's turbocharger has the "brake" built into it. So, no this is not a "Jake Brake", its a VGT turbocharger with a built in choke basically. BUT, Jacobs makes "exhaust" brakes for the 5.9L. The only light duty diesel you can get a true "Engine" brake on is the 7.3 Powerstroke, swapped over from a 444 International truck (7.3L).
Did you install a real Jake Brake on there? Because the 6.7 comes stock with an exhaust brake. Not a Jake Brake. So unl;ess you installed a TRUE Jake Brake you have NO idea what the hell youre talking about.
@VACummins67 A real Jake Brake are you a dumb asss????? You have no idea what you are talking about ,
Jake Brake or Jacobs Brake is a brand of exhaust brakes such as Banks, Pac Brake or BD , so before you post find out what the hell you are talking about. And to the guy that posted the Vid that truck is bad ass.
@VACummins67 Its a jacobs exhaust brake, IE: jake brake. He never said it was a retarder which is what your thinking of. So i believe you dont know what your talking about. Im so tired of know it alls.
is it a true jake brake or just an exhaust brake? i kinda find it hard to believe someone would retro-fit a true jake brake on a light duty engine. I have an exhaust brake on my truck and it sounds about the same
in MA you must pull over one lane for an emergency vehicle ( ambulance, fire truck police car tow truck) or slow down to a speed no higher than 20 mph just so u dont get a 1500 fine
I don't think a 5.9 is going to sound that much better or louder, plus you can delete most of the stuff on the 6.7. I would still rather a proven 5.9 over a 6.7 any day though.
@psychotikpaisano What are you talking about, there is no "true Jake". "Jake" is the company, and the company makes engine, bleeders and exhaust brakes, and Dodge uses JVS exhaust brakes in their trucks.
I was referring to the Jacobs compression brake. The loud ass ones used on big rigs that sound like machine guns. I was unaware that jacobs made exhaust brakes tho :)
It would be amazing if someone made a one off compression brake for the B series, I would buy it in an instant!
Hot Damn! I own a ford 6.0(love the sound, hate the motor!) but I gotta admit a cummins with a 6spd is freakin cool as hell. I have been shopping around for a newer truck and was looking at the 08/09 Ford Harleys, but for the price of a used one I can get a 2011 Dodge. very tough choice now. Sweet Harley interior or a cummins with a 6spd?
You assholes dont give dodge enough credit ..and i know for a fact that it can haul20 tons because. I have hauled similar weight. Aroundd 18 tons. And it pulled it no problem. As long as the transmission stAys cool. It can handle it
Youguys got it all wrong. "Jake brake" refers to engine, exhaust, and bleeder brakes that all come from one company: Jacob's Vehicle Systems. "Jake brake" isn't just one of those above, they are all Jake brakes, they serve the same purpose, but using a different principle. And whoever thinks otherwise, holy mother fucker I would like to shove a 12 gauge Mossberg so far up your ass, you could lick the shit off the tip of the barrel before I pull the trigger.
@230bj You do kinda have a point because thats over double the dodges towing capacity not that im saying it cant tow it but maby doing 20-35 mph tops because you do have to think about stopping that load.
@230bj our D8 Caterpillar weighs 20 tons, 20 tons=40,000 lbs, and i know a dodge can haul it without any protests or complaining, that was hauled with our 01 dodge 24 valve cummins, would love to prove it to you when spring comes around and we start fixing lakes and dams again =)
@230bj it depends on what year you have, ours is a 1960 8R1 and it's actual weight (weighed it at an elevator) was 44,220 lbs with the dozer on, the newer ones are heavier probably because of the cab, accesories etc.
whats your total combined weight on the average? What type of fuel milage do you get, and what rears do you have? How many miles are on the truck? and final question would you buy another 6.7??? please let me know I am considering buying one. Thank you
@nathan12111 HAha... I dont fit in those cars..I drive an F150...No overseas crap for me! And I was talking about the camera being thrown around and shaking....hard on the eyes.!
lol@ :31 "no that is NOT a jake brake". True, jacobs made an exhaust brake for your truck but by no means is it a engine brake like you have it labeled. Two totally different things. I dont even think they make an engine brake for a motor that small. Not sure though. Trow a 3406 with a jacobs engine brake in that thing with straight pipes and youll know you got an engine brake
wow I never heard one of these diesel pickups from inside the cab, I've been driving semi's all my life and I have to say they sound like "shit" compared to a big truck, I would put the stock muffler back on, and yes that is not a jake dude, a jake is internal, you know inside the engine, not an exhaust brake, that would be a retarder.
Why is this supposed to be so special. Get a real truck for hauling. You like many other young kids love that Jake Brake for everything what it was meant to do. Happy trails on the repair bill when you play with it to much. You want a real truck drive a Transtar II, or a C500 KW.
WHY IN THE HELL would anyone want to listen to all that noise? I have a 5.9 and a 6.7 Cummins and I tell my wife I am going to stack one or both of them out...She knows I am joking but she said she would leave me if I did.
@scotty1045 why not? some people like the noise.. some people like the look and performance and then we have people like you. besides if your girl or wife doesn't understand then you shouldn't waste your time with them
there 2 different things exhaust valve breaks and and exhaust brakes people have no clue these days wow it says jake brake so that means its true. "jake brake" a company name not a engine valve break like semis have
You guys are fighting over nothing, Jake Brake (Jacobs Engineering) is the actual company, yes the common term for a rattling brake is a Jake Brake, but there are also companies who do the same thing playing with the intake and exhaust valve timing. Jacobs does in fact also make an exhaust brake, it is what comes stock on new 6.7L Dodges. So, a Jake can be a rattler of valves, or an exhaust brake like BD, Banks, and others
so with stacks does it cause more of a drone in the cab because my psd is straight piped but it exits in front of the rear wheel which kinda make them hard to keep clean so i was looking in to stack to cut back on washing the soot off the ass end of my truck
I would love to haul ass (and God knows what else) through my neighborhood at 3 am, foot to the floor, just so I could let off the go pedal to wake the dead, and piss off the living!
Jacobs does in fact make a Dodge Cummins Exhaust brake so it is a Jake brake. They also make Exhaust brakes for other smaller diesel engines. We all associate the Jake Brake with the compression brake that alters valve timing by opening the exhaust valve at TDC and cutting off the fuel. But Jake Brake doesn't always have to mean a compression brake. History: Clessie Cummins invented it and sold it to Jacobs who invented the famous Jacobs ball chuck.
@underPSI A "Jake Brake" is a design that adapts to your valve train. It utilizes an electrical solenoid controlled by the driver (A switch on the Dash, some times tied into your brake lights as well...) stretching over the exhaust cross head / exhaust rocker arm / injector push rod. Basically it pushes a low amount of oil channeled to a slave piston that holds the exhaust valve into position. This is why you hear the noise and get that mass of back pressure and engine retarding.
@Magnumkevlar Similar yes. Exhaust brake is an exhaust retarder, it restricts how much and how fast the exhaust can leave the engine. The Jake break is a different principle. It works basically by keeping the exhaust valve closed when it would normally be opened for the exhaust stroke. Because the exhaust gases have no where to go, its harder for the crankshaft (driven buy the momentum of the truck spinning the wheels) to push the piston up because it has to compress the exhaust.
@CowsXonXcrack wtf you got it all wrong. an engine brake doesnt keep the exhaust valve closed instead it opens in right at the top of the compression stroke releasing all the compressed air brought in with the intake stroke. Thats why people say a jake brake pretty much an engine a giant air compressor. Jakes use engine compression to slow an engine down, similar to gear braking but much stronger because you're not creating a powerstroke.
@deanieweenie116 They all pull that much. They usually can handle about 40,000lbs. Although i've seen a ram 2500 pull out a semi weighing in at 62,000lbs before.
no its a jake brake you can hear the motor decelerating an exhaust brake is after the turbo and doesn't make the motor make noise so this sir is a legit jake
i'm thinking of stacks for my 02 and getting rid of my auto for a nv5600 conversion. can someone tell me how loud is the noise inside the cab with all the windows up with straight pipes?
yeah. jakes were used on a lot of older trucks and actually slowed down the motor because they were installed inside the motor. an exhaust brake which is seen here is installed in the turbo outlet and creates a backpressure in exhaust gasses and slows the engine down a little. a jake brake is more effective but puts more wear and tear on the engine
@Caboose101ify please try to understand this ok.. this is and EXHAUST BRAKE it closes the xhaust making back pressure that is VERY BAD FOR THE ENGINE a JAKE BRAKE open both intake and exhaust valve letting all gasses to pass through creating no power TWO VERY SEPERATE SYSTEMS BUT NICE TRY EDUCATION--diesel mechanic for many years
@ktmmx29 technically speaking it hold forces the exhaust valves open to dump all compression, if you were to open the intake valve youd back feed super hot air into intake side of the turbo the turbo which would be the worst backpressure ever, you have intake boots and intercooler boots flying off.. one heck of a mess
ShastymiCnasty is completely right with his comment. Before he mentioned the Variable Geometric Turbo, which is installed on the 6.7L Cummins. Now sdcam101, if you are in fact seeing Jake Brake exhaust brakes installed on the 6.7L, thats a big problem. Talk about voiding warranties on both the Jake brake and the truck, and some damage could be done as well. Just go to their website, look under Light Duty. Remember, the VGT is what is acting as the exhaust brake now, and it is not a Jake Brake.
@powersguy, did you happen to know that Jacobs Vehicle system out of Bloomfield Connecticut manufactured the exhaust brakes for Rams with the 5.9 Cummins? I'm assuming you did not. Jake brake is a brand name. It is true that it is not the same as the engine brakes they use on the big rigs to change the exhaust valve timing and turning the engine into a compressor which results into retarding power but it is very much a Jake Brake just in a different form.
I like the fake msp sticker in the windshield.

Yes Jake brakes are the same thing as exhaust brakes cause they both use the exhaust
topgunner58 1 year ago
jacobs work off the valves, and an exhaust brake is in the exhaust, two different things.
AceofSpadesau 1 year ago 3
actually they are 2 seperate things. Yes they both deal with exhaust but they are not the same.

@underPSI jakes are an ENGINE brake

@jstett1 study reading comprehension much?
underPSI 1 year ago
@jstett1 Jacobs exhaust break is the same principle as an Engine/exhaust break, but its a different system.
CowsXonXcrack 1 year ago
@underPSI A "Jake Brake" is a design that adapts to your valve train. It utilizes an electrical solenoid controlled by the driver (A switch on the Dash, some times tied into your brake lights as well...) stretching over the exhaust cross head / exhaust rocker arm / injector push rod. Basically it pushes a low amount of oil channeled to a slave piston that holds the exhaust valve into position. This is why you hear the noise and get that mass of back pressure and engine retarding.

whats the difference in a jake brake and exhaust brake? dont they work similar to eachother?
Magnumkevlar 1 year ago
@Magnumkevlar Similar yes. Exhaust brake is an exhaust retarder, it restricts how much and how fast the exhaust can leave the engine. The Jake break is a different principle. It works basically by keeping the exhaust valve closed when it would normally be opened for the exhaust stroke. Because the exhaust gases have no where to go, its harder for the crankshaft (driven buy the momentum of the truck spinning the wheels) to push the piston up because it has to compress the exhaust.
CowsXonXcrack 1 year ago
@CowsXonXcrack wtf you got it all wrong. an engine brake doesnt keep the exhaust valve closed instead it opens in right at the top of the compression stroke releasing all the compressed air brought in with the intake stroke. Thats why people say a jake brake pretty much an engine a giant air compressor. Jakes use engine compression to slow an engine down, similar to gear braking but much stronger because you're not creating a powerstroke.

@underPSI listen to it.. it is.. u can get them for this style cummins
ryguydrumboy 1 year ago
@underPSI actually u can get a jake with these trucks..
ryguydrumboy 1 year ago
@ryguydrumboy yup, its not cheap but the dealer will do it for you, a dads friend had one on his 5.9
outdoorsman767 1 year ago
@underPSI It's called the Jacobs Exhaust Brake & it's built by the same people. So even though it's not an engine brake, it's still a Jake.

@MtWill79
the only one with a true "engine brake" is the new 6.7 powerstroke.. the others are exhaust brakes

how do you have it pulling so much?
deanieweenie116 1 year ago
@deanieweenie116 They all pull that much. They usually can handle about 40,000lbs. Although i've seen a ram 2500 pull out a semi weighing in at 62,000lbs before.

Jake/Exhaust are the same thing. Jake is the term that started from the company "Jacobs".
dantheman85x 1 year ago
6.7 Cummins use a variable geometry turbo, and when you push a button on the dash it closes the vanes all the way down.

is it a true jake brake? or an exhaust brake?
cornraker 2 years ago
@cornraker
It's a exhaust brake, and damn it sounds sweet!
Almost like a semi jake.
drummerdude667 1 year ago 2
it is a jake brake. its labled that way on the trucks when they come from the factory
lucky131809 2 years ago
its not a jake. its an exhaust brake
bigredf150 1 year ago
no its a jake brake you can hear the motor decelerating an exhaust brake is after the turbo and doesn't make the motor make noise so this sir is a legit jake
nvfd103 1 year ago
it's a exhaust break not a jake

i'm thinking of stacks for my 02 and getting rid of my auto for a nv5600 conversion. can someone tell me how loud is the noise inside the cab with all the windows up with straight pipes?
coryallen75 2 years ago
the jake brakes are used to slow down the motor when your going downhill
johneverett12345 2 years ago
Nice truck, How did you get around the dam Dps shit when you straight piped it??

does anyone know how hard it is to put a straight pipe homemade exhuast on my 95 cummins?

exhaust retarder not a jake brake
ktmmx29 2 years ago 14
yeah. jakes were used on a lot of older trucks and actually slowed down the motor because they were installed inside the motor. an exhaust brake which is seen here is installed in the turbo outlet and creates a backpressure in exhaust gasses and slows the engine down a little. a jake brake is more effective but puts more wear and tear on the engine
DoDgErAmSrBeAsT94 2 years ago 3
@ktmmx29 its made by the same company, many of these have black decals that say "jake brake"
hayliscape 1 year ago
@ktmmx29 it is called a jake brake, ur the freakin retard
Caboose101ify 1 year ago
@Caboose101ify please try to understand this ok.. this is and EXHAUST BRAKE it closes the xhaust making back pressure that is VERY BAD FOR THE ENGINE a JAKE BRAKE open both intake and exhaust valve letting all gasses to pass through creating no power TWO VERY SEPERATE SYSTEMS BUT NICE TRY EDUCATION--diesel mechanic for many years
ktmmx29 1 year ago
@ktmmx29 technically speaking it hold forces the exhaust valves open to dump all compression, if you were to open the intake valve youd back feed super hot air into intake side of the turbo the turbo which would be the worst backpressure ever, you have intake boots and intercooler boots flying off.. one heck of a mess
andrewburbach 10 months ago
ok every body, the best is a cummins 5.9 wiht a banks power exhaust brake.
vhescudero 2 years ago
ShastymiCnasty is completely right with his comment. Before he mentioned the Variable Geometric Turbo, which is installed on the 6.7L Cummins. Now sdcam101, if you are in fact seeing Jake Brake exhaust brakes installed on the 6.7L, thats a big problem. Talk about voiding warranties on both the Jake brake and the truck, and some damage could be done as well. Just go to their website, look under Light Duty. Remember, the VGT is what is acting as the exhaust brake now, and it is not a Jake Brake.
twinmacs 2 years ago
@powersguy, did you happen to know that Jacobs Vehicle system out of Bloomfield Connecticut manufactured the exhaust brakes for Rams with the 5.9 Cummins? I'm assuming you did not. Jake brake is a brand name. It is true that it is not the same as the engine brakes they use on the big rigs to change the exhaust valve timing and turning the engine into a compressor which results into retarding power but it is very much a Jake Brake just in a different form.
