  • This song is ALOT BETTER now that the war in Iraq is over.

  • Thank a service person today! For every one that comes home, that person knows someone that didn't .

  • Arlo, nothing more needs to be said, nothing more is needed.

  • Ron Paul is the only candidate I've ever given cash to !

Rick Dav & Oath Keepers founding member.

There are "Oath takers & Oath Keepers"

  • Best tune you've ever written Arlo ! Thank You

    A DAV

  • A very timely song that is without time, written and recorded by a great American. This has been a favorite of mine now for at least two decades. Arlo once mailed me a photo copy of this one in his own handwriting. I still have it. I gladly would have paid for it, but I think he was just glad to have someone like the song. I have just reposted it to my Facebook wall as once again, it is timely,

  • to HalfBornUnicorn...He wasn't predicting Afghanistan, he was writing about the war the Russians had there with the Taliban, you know, the one where we made Osama bin Ladin a hero. And when he says, "Before the war in Iraq was even geting thought about", (or something like that), he is refering to what I call, BWI (Bush War One, he one where Papa Bush took on Iraq over the Kuwait Occupation.. This was wow Little George was still coking it up in the oil fields I guess.

    I

  • @camtrucker

I couldnt tell if this was in the 1990's or not, never occured to me about the Russian invasion. Im with Arlo, Im for Ron Paul :)

  • Wow--he was predicting Afghanistan early it seems.

  • Amen...thanks for your service nevertheless from an old grave digger, and one who takes pride in being an old cemetery worker

  • I am a 35 year vet, I never thought I was dying for anyone, I was doing my job. As do the police, the EMTs, the Walmart cashier, the gas station attendent, the mailman, the garbage collector, the office worker and others, we all do 'our' job. Some experience danger in it, some bordom, but people do what they can to make a living. If everyone treated other with respect, this would be a great place. Thanks for the sone Arlo, loved your song 40 years ago, you are still going strong thru time.

  • I'm with you guys, I hope ya'll get back safe and sound.

  • Sadly, this song is NOT outdated. Too many soldiers dying. I wonder where the passion to end the war that showed itself in the 60's and 70's has gone.

  • The "recommended video" for this was a recruiting ad. How funny is that?

  • One hell of a meaningful song from a great performer !

  • I care! Have a son just sent to Afghanistan, after 2 tours in Iraq. I know many Viet Nam vets. too. Thanks to you all. I care!!!!

  • Thank you all soldiers from WWII to Afghanistan.

  • We never thought he would grow up the chances he would have the disease that killed his father was a real possibility but he was a lucky one and so are we!.

  • I pray we will all escape our own confusion , there is no greater wish !

  • I thank all the troops who helped to make our land better. Those who gave their lives, rest in peace my friends.

  • This video should have 100 million views... just sayin'

  • @Whozzo make it about 4-5 billions.. Everyone on this planet should listen to this song.. and with a translation if required..

  • Thank you for the song and posting. Been 42 years on this long, lonley road of the living missing so many listed on that black wall. Maybe war will someday be a forgotten word, but then again I kinda think not. Praise and thanks to all past and present service members that I proudly call brothers and sisters.

  • I am a Vietnam Vet, my Daughter served two tours in Iraq, she saw more carnage than I did. The human race has become more efficient in killing each other, a very sad state of affairs. Thank you Arlo for a beautiful song. Peace is not a difficult thing to imagine, too bad some of the world leaders cannot accept the fact that we are all the same and should be treated with respect instead of scorn. War is the solution for the narrow minded, Peace is the solution for the enlightened.

  • Truly beautiful. Thank you for sharing this song with us all, Jackie. You and Arlo and the family are wonderful gifts.

  • Thanks to all sevicemen . Memorial Day 2011.

  • My wife and I heard Arlo sing this in London last year. Magical.

  • My wife and I heard Arlo sing this in London last year. Magical.

  • I SALUTE and HONOR the veterans of VIETNAM, both wars in IRAQ, in AFGHANISTAN--wherever they may have been. Thank you, Arlo!!!! LOVE YOU, TOO.

  • I miss my brothers I lost In Nam. My scars will never fade they are my story.

  • My brother was there. He told me today he refused a direct order from his commander to kill a guy fixing his tire. I have a new respect for him.

  • Maybe this song should be for all soldiers, at least they have the balls to put on a uniform and stand up for their beliefs. They dont attack from a crowd or behind women and kids, or use them to kill. They, from what ever nation or creed should be given respect for that. All said AG has stood the test of time, and is IMHO the best at what he does.

  • I Have never served and I have quite different politics than most who do serve. However ,I have a few very close friends that did serve and one who is serving right now. One of them recently died, and I would like to say to all of you that I have the utmost respect for all of you. Politicians pick the reasons, soldiers are great and honorable people who do what they must. Thank you, all of you, for serving, it means the world to me and I hope you all lead happy lives.

  • To all of my brothers who have served their country, and to their families that sacrificed to support our country ; WE as a people, owe you an unmeasurable thanks. I served in the ARMY and am very proud of my service, prouder still of those who gave so much more than I did. People, support your troops. No one is asking you to support the war or the politics...Only those who are put in harms way. Go to your local American Legion and help. Show your support for those who serve.

  • Thank you Arlo, while I have always understood your music, the fact that those at home never seemed to know, understand, nor care of the burdens shared by everyone who has served overseas in time of conflict, it is very very heartwwarming too hear that it is not all for not,,, again thank you

  • Thanks for the memories

  • Fantastic song from one of the masters to our brave soldiers.

  • At least we didn't confuse the war w/ the warrior this time.

  • Soldiers don't start wars they just die in them ! The Fat Cats in the Government do and they HIDE behind the soldiers ! Sabbath says this in War Pigs ! I did my time in Army glad I made It ! I bow to ALL OUR SOLDIERS

  • I've loved you, Arlo, since the 1960's! Your songs sang truth to me. Our Vietnam vets were given such a horrible return (I wore my metal bracelet 28 years for my Lt. Col.) Two years ago, I found he was alive and well with family. My fellow hippies and I saw our Vietnam vets as heroes! How could people call themselves "hippies", do such a thing? With military heritage from 1812, I cried through this song. Webiefitz, I agree!!! We owe our men and women in uniform a debt we cannot repay.

  • Thank to all our men and women in uniform - past, present and future - we owe you a debt we can never repay....God Bless

  • Thanks for your thoughtful words ... when you get a chance, express a bit of "semper fi" to your great uncles ... and "great" is probs a bit understated for the service they did. You seem bright and considerate ... be well. Thanks!

  • Out of all the acts out of the hippie generation he is perhaps my favorite cause he was honest and truly did love everyone. I just dislike when "hippies" would spit and call names to soldiers returning home. Two of my great uncles were Marines in 'Nam and although they hated the war they felt more hate at home then when they were overseas from the people that got to sit at home and protest while they were slogging through the jungles dreaming of home.

  • REMEMBER THOSE THAT HAVE SERVED AND ARE STILL SERVING.SET BACK AND CLOSE YOU EYES AND GIVE IT A LISTEN.THANKS ROBERT

  • @rooster5673

THANK YOU FOR SERVING, ROBERT - ON BEHALF OF OUR FAMILY, WELCOME HOME - YOU ARE ALWAYS IN OUR PRAYERS AND HEARTS. GOD BLESS

  • REMEMBER THOSE THAT HAVE SERVED AND ARE STILL SERVING.SET BACK AND CLOSE YOU EYES AND GIVE IT A LISTEN.

  • GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS & MAY THEY ALL MAKE IT HOME SOON....

  • @2224612 , lost my big brother in the Tet offensive 68, prayers are w/ you

  • @stalkingwolf1954 Bless your Heart little Brother, or Sister..... We miss your Big Brother too! I was Boots in Country after TET and some gave all so that they we may live these 'oh so many' years later in our 'continuously Brothers Lost' Peace! I walk with you in sadness, Markus Carwash Perry VNVM/C

  • Amazing. I have a nephew going over there.

  • Arlo, You've still got it. Great song with a great message!

  • they show us how to get rady for it and how to survive and to move on but they did not show me how it would be when i got home for night and months i kept sleeping on the floor this song hit the point and god bless you all USMC Gunny S

  • Those hellish wars has ruined many of our boys lives and this one is the worst immoral acts I've ever seen. Bring them HOME to protect US not murdering enemies!

  • great storyteller.....seems like your best freind sitin round a fire

  • I've always loved Arlo and his music. Used to drive the lifers crazy when we turned him up loud on the combat bases. I wish some of them could have heard this one from him. I did my time and don't need or want thanks. I saw heroes being made and I saw boys cry for their mamas. Some day we won't have any more wars. I had hoped to liv to see that day but I know now I won't

  • @2224612 Now I can't stop crying, you brought it all back to me. I met a guy, early '60's, loved him so but lost touch, us different races, me really young--after a short marriage I found him again, a miracle, us ecstatic with joy; he re-upped "just a few more months" to help his widowed mom & little bro. Blown to bits his last week in 'Nam...his mom crying to me for decades, hurt so deeply--they sent him home in 1/2 a body bag! And he's not even on the Wall! Still I cry...War wounds us all

  • The first time i heard this song was in 2000 at a festival in Ohio, I was 25 and the son of a viet nam era vet, about a year later 9/11 happened and in 03 I joined the Army. Long story short, I served a tour in Iraq and when I came home, well, lets just say its a long and lonely road, not to many songs really capture that feeling like this one, Thank You Mr. Arlo Guthrie, even though you wrote this about a russian soldier, it means more than you know to this American Soldier.

  • @gratefulsoldier4012

Thank YOU for Serving. WELCOME HOME -- you and all who serve are always in our hearts, thoughts and daily prayers. We are SO VERY PROUD of YOU................ and you mean more to us than YOU will ever know (((( hug )))

  • "History doesn't repeat, but it does rhyme..." - My soul brother Mark Twain

  • Arlo ROCKS...

  • @ I agree with Davidorfull. Look at my 20 concerts and video clips. I don't give sermon when I play in the US, Europe, Israel. If you want a sermon, go to a synagogue, a church or a mosque. I saw concerts of Bob Dylan, or Leonard Cohen, and everybody knows Bob Dylan was a great fan of Woodie Guthrie, and I never saw Bob Dylan or Lenard Cohen make sermons of several minutes.

Music keeps you closer to God. We want music, We have to stay away from the politics of lights in the glamour and lights.

  • @davidorbachmusic....... I agree 110% about music keeping you closer to GOD

  • Abe's keyboard sounds SOO much better than the Boston Pops!!

  • This old man speaks too much.

  • @Davidorfull He's a folk singer bonehead! Have any idea what that is? Have any idea what they do? One of the dumbest comments I have ever read on youtube!

  • We need to be proud of our military.

  • Like hearing an old Dylan song...is it possible Arlo finally tapped into a veterans point of view? What's next ? surely not I'm not Fonda Jane!!!! Aahhh hell I'm just waiting around to see the US gov't ...to start caring about us vets also...just maybe in my lifetime.

  • @MrJojogun One that served in 2 kind of armies, commie&western. I'll tell you, we were just puppets and no politician will give you thanks for serving. They need cannon fodder as my father was in WWII. But I love musicians who can put it in words and melody. For a better conversation, if OK, I'll send you my address. I like talking to some musically well informed guys, I lack a lot of that culture. If NO, just good with me.

  • rabidwolf3: You can convince yourself all you wish about your lofty fantasies, but what you do has nothing whatever to do with preserving my freedom or that of any American except the defense industry contractors and their investors.

  • The best of the best,

  • Saw this wonderful God in Dublin, Ireland this week at the National Concert Hall and he was amazing. 2nd time in 18 months I have seen Arlo in Dublin, so I know he likes us. Arlo, pleaseeeeeee come back real soon. You are a beautiful person and so many people love you. Safe home from Ireland and get back soon.....

  • Looking for the lyrics in print, cannot understand all the words, but love the song.

  • THANK YOU!!!! Thank you to every individual protecting this Great Nation, period.

  • @ bosnmate820

These wounded veterans deserve AN APOLOGY. Read the names on the stones and realize the dead veterans THOUGHT they were dying for us because they were lied to. It isn't until we stop indulging in these insane fluff pieces when wounded and dead veterans will stop being wounded and dead veterans and will just be free people we pass on the street going about their lives as we do.

The greatest gift we can offer the future "hero" is the opportunity for a long and happy life.

  • @Augsnod If it were not for us veterans doing what we do you would not have a voice. We are all volunteers every one of us. Something different when Arlo wrote this song. I have served all these years to protect all of you. If we believed what you do that we were lied to do you think that the military would be so over strength as we are? We are the proud few of this country that actually have done something for our country instead of just pissing and moaning how things should be

  • There are strains of "My Back Pages" by Bob Dylan....no?

  • Anyone who can listen to this and not feel damn proud and cry at the same time is not a true American. Arlo is truly one of a kind........

  • This song never leaves me with dry eyes! It is as relevant today as the time it was written--unfortunately so.

  • Being a disabled vet from the Gulf War, just want to say thanks to those who still believe in us.

  • @lazydayz2000 No shit!!!! If it weren't for you and the military we'd be speaking German or now arabic. So thanks to all of you and let's pray that the military will grow not be messed with. God bless all of you and that civilians can enjoy the freedoms we enjoy.

  • @lazydayz2000 Thank you for your sacrifice. You are a real hero.

  • @lazydayz2000 Thanks for serving.

  • @lazydayz2000 Two words come to mind... Thank you!!!

  • @lazydayz2000 I believe in you, brother!

  • @lazydayz2000 I hear ya bro, am a disabled vet myself from the same time and feel the same. stay safe.

  • his beginning monologueabout the 60s, is EXACTLY the same today - a million things DELIBERATELY caused by the Feds/ International. Look at the horror of the oil spilled in the Gulf of Mex. Tptb has started the push to another war, again. I suppose their Human Sacrifice has just about worn out, tht they need our new precious Treasures again!

This time, NO! They shalln't hv them. NO WAR!

  • Thanks to all the Vets for making freedom free........I miss you POP.........

  • A song for Memorial Day, and everyday for those who have borne the battle.

  • He looks better with shorter hair.

  • Saw him do this live a few years ago.... brought tears to my eyes!

  • ive got the up most respect for any man or woman that has seen a war first hand....... BUT, I dont want a pickle. I just want to ride my motor...... Cicle!!!! good ole days!! lmao

  • wish you would release this entire show on DVD... I was there and it was a great night for sure!

  • I never really cared too much for folk music, but then i heard Arlo. Love this guy, and may he never die! :)

  • it sounds alot like" My back pages"

  • FANTASTIC

  • @PPCL455 It really is amazing! I took my parents to see him last April! He is more amazing in person then in his videos if that's possible!

  • @jackielinne WOULD LOVE TO SEE HIM LIVE, IT WOULD BRING BACK 40 YEARS OF MEMORIES

  • I'd love to sit through one of arlos shows and listen to all his many many stories most of which have something to do with us all.

  • thank you i rember the 60 s it was the worst 18 months of hell for me love you brother been in the gulf war also we all thank you peace out meathead3225

  • Love Pete laying there on the floor....

  • Beautiful!! I ate at Alices Resturant!!

  • Great song, Arlo. Thanks on behalf of the fallen.

  • thank you very much arlo for caring, I stand up for our soldiers same as you, your hair is so white because you care.

  • that was powerful

  • Is thier an album with this song ont it?

  • i've stuck with Arlo's music since the 60's, this is a good one for our beleaguered country, ...! Thanks to all you young vets from the war. May God have mercy on our country. +

  • Since I've been home from Aghanistan I see that so many people are tired of the war and ambivilence has set in amongst my countrymen. I'm not sure how to feel about that.

  • THANK YOU SFC Benny for serving your country!!Men and women like you are our HEROS!

  • You are a HERO NEVER forget that.. Warriors are Noble...This happened with Vietnam..There will always be ambivalence...American are just so caught up in their own lives they do not see the Big Picture...Yet You are HONORED by so many you do not even know...We appreciate what you have done for your country..my son-in-law is going back to Afghanistan as a medic, 2nd tour. There are plenty in this nation who appreciate you for what you have sacrificed. Hold your head HIGH..You did what others won't

  • @LisaWard1957 we all love you tryed to send u comment dont know if u got it but we need to stand up for are fucking rights here in the usa i did my time over sea know im a disabled fucking vet that nobody gives a shit peace out

  • @metalhead3225 Metalhead, I give a shit about u. Me and many other of my fellow liberals who salute you and what you did. I just wish we could thank you in appropriate measure for what you did.

  • @metalhead3225 From one vet to another, Thank You and Welcome Home.

  • Rest assured - we are so greatful for your service. The world, not just the United States, is safer because of you.

  • @SFCBenny57 I hope we NEVER get ambivalent about you. You and all the others who laid their lives on the line so we can sit here in comfort and bitch about botox injections or Donald Trump or who got kicked off American Idol. The REAL American Idols are the soldiers, not that vapid TV show... Thank you for your service.

  • Awesome comments about my wall post of this song! From an old hippie who happens to have a young friend about to head out for her 2nd tour in Iraq.

Me and another friend (my age) have tickets for your show on March 31 in Austin, Texas.

    Keep up the excellent work!

    ~ Peace

  • i did one tour of the nam as a combat medic and never want to relive that time

some stayed home to bring us home safely

    we are all warriors

    bring the troops home now

  • i did 3 tours of duty, some of the guys didn't come home. Don't remember arlo guthrie there, or am i missing the point ?

  • With all due respect, you're missing the point by about 180 degrees.

  • if i remember arlo guthrie dropped a load of trash, rite ! so no draft 4 him, get real.

  • Ask a stupid question Will!!! Did you see my uncle Nick there?

  • wuz he the guy with no teeth :))

  • yes he was. you WERE in nam!

  • From a soldier who made it home.

This is always relevant and always brings things into perspective.

  • Welcome home my Brother Welcome home!

  • I've seen a lot of shows, Arlo is by far one of the funnest with his stories, humor & audience participation.

  • Arlo this song will never be out of date...because no one should forget...great song and lyrics.

  • Certainly one of the most beautiful and poignant folk songs ever written.

  • such a powerful song that tells the truth "let's try our damnest to treat the boy's and girls coming home this time better than what they were treated when the came home from nam",I was just a baby then but their were the one's who were "mother fucker you all shuold die, then ones who were I dont wanna do this and were just their,

  • Wow ... the world has come a long way ... I was one of those who got spat upon at O'Hare in Chicago ... 1973 was a very long time ago ... my tears to this song are for the many ... you'll find their names on a big wall in Washington D.C. ... and my daughter made it back from Iraq ... glad she had a different reception. Thanks for your thoughtfulness.

    JL USN 1973

  • Welcome home my brother welcome home!

  • @professorjl Thank you sir for serving, sometimes some people look at the "hippies" of that era with rose colored glasses and did not realize just how much hate they showed to men who were simply drafted and had very little choice but to go overseas often losing friends and brothers in combat while they were at home warm and safe able to protest and smoke out while you guys were slogging it in the jungles dreaming of home.

  • We must be blind to believe these wars are about our freedom. Bring the boys home.

  • i think the older he isthe better he gets..

    his voice is just amazing..

not to mention everything else like music and lyrics.. what a great man..

  • As long as EVIL persists there are only 2 things people can do, fight and be free, or don't fight and live under another man's hand and submit to his will, they can have my gun when they take it out of my dead hand .....

  • It doen't remind me of anything else. This song stands stong all by itself....Great Arlo!

  • This is such a good song. We need more patriotic music!

  • He is still the best man in Folk... To me he's best!

  • @kinskifreak Great song that just keeps being relevant... also in Denmark where I live.

  • @pmk1956 Denmark? that's cool^^ I'm from Flensburg, it marches directly upon Denmark =)

  • @kinskifreak Never a true word spoken.....the very best

  • True that

  • @kinskifreak Honestly? Outside of Alice's Restaurant (which is too long), this is the closest he'll ever come to his dad...

  • I have a good friend in Irac right now who is full blood Yavapi Apache, I asked him why are you gonna fight for a country that stole from your people and marched them to san carlos in the middle of winter? He told me I am fighting for my freedom as well as any other man, or women that is their as well, jah bless all of you till you come home and thanks for your sacrafice

  • gotta love arlo...

  • Whatever our faith may be. May YOUR higher power bless our FRIENDS, FAMILY, ALLIES AND ENIMIES!

  • I visited Covina Hills Forest Lawn with a friend and her family to visit her son's grave. As we passed going to his grave, one of his best friend's grave was there...He was casuality of war. It was moving to see his picture and the flags. I added some flags that had been discarded. I thought of this song. I felt proud to know our President honored our fallen troops a couple of weeks ago by showing up as their bodies were flown in and spending time with them and their families.

  • Whatever your opinion on the troops and the war, you have the right to it without anyone going personal and being impolite. Some of these comments go against the spirit with which Arlo wrote this fine song and his general message of love, peace and tolerance for all citizens of the world. I always say, I may disagree with your opinion completely, but I'd die to protect your right to have it.

  • Volunteer at the VA for a day and see. As a 20 year retired USMC Officer, the next person that says they can oppose the war and not the troops should try serving before they sound off stupid.

  • During vietnam they asked me if I would volunteer in the VA - I said yes and I would have but even that is just supporting war and hate/agression on this planet- Those who went - that was their choice- I am not buying into your guilt rap. Millions have died on this planet

maybe its time for peace and love - Its obvious war aint getting us anywhere

  • Take the time to visit one of the many Veterans' Hospitals and Just say "thank you" to the wounded. Take time to go to a Veterans' Cemetery and lay a wreath by the flagpole, then walk slowly along the rows of stones and read the names and the ages of some when they died FOR YOU! Bow your head and simply say, "Thank You". They will hear you. Listen closely, you might hear them answer.

  • @bosnmate820 Beautiful. Thank you, bosnmate.

  • @bosnmate820 Excellent Polish proverb to reinforce what you're saying: "Speak well of history, and the dead will not rise up against you."

  • @bosnmate820

Are you off your nut? They died for nothing. They died because some bastard politician sent them to a foreign land to murder and die.

  • @sscb1 To murder??? Shame on you.

  • @MrJojogun

When someone aggresses against another and takes their life it's called murder. Shame is for those with blood on their hands.

  • @sscb1 You are clueless

  • @bosnmate820 seen arlo do an accoustic set in glasgow a few weeks ago for the first time was great!!! but you're comment is a true testimate to what the song stands for!!! the song and you're comment send a shiver and a bit of hope and sadness at the same time!!! just shows you from the 30's to the 60's to now absoulutey nothing has changed in politics!!

  • Take time to thank a VET ! Take time to shake their hands or give them a hug.

They are the reason you are FREE!

I do this all the time, and it really does make a differance. So to all the Veterans who will read my post.. THANK YOU! and May God bless you and your family!

  • So great, this is how you felt when you came back from Nam. You should atleast say thanks, not Spit on you!

  • My heart was broken when I saw how people treated vets. I lost two cousins, two friends in Viet Nam. I also had class mates that died. I wasn't "for" the war", but I WAS FOR OUR YOUNG MEN OVER THERE AND TOTALLY SUPPORTED THEM.

  • What's wrong with liking both singers? What's wrong with liking music from many different artists???

  • Talk to me about "narrow mindedness -- some folks cannot seem to entertain or expand upoon widening their horizons, beliefs and their hearts.

  • he is like Bobby Dylan....I like he' s music . :-)

  • It's like he IS THE MUSIC

  • Music is everything :)

  • There is a depth to his music -- a feeling of understanding about life.

  • right
